The very name of Quebec is a mystery . Some believe that it is derived from the Indian word Kebec , signifying "a strait , " and applied to the narrowing of the St . Lawrence off Cape Diamond . Others think that it was named in loving remembrance of Caudebec , cn the Seine , to which its natural features bear a magnified resemblance : and show that William de la Pole , Earl of

Suffolk , in the fifteenth century , bore on his seal the title of Lord of Quebec . Suffolk had large estates in France , and became the conqueror of Joan of Arc ; but was impeached and put to death for causing the loss of the English provinces on the continent fas related by Shakspere , in " King Henry VI ., " Part IL , Act iv . ) The

popular account , however , of the origin of the name of the Canadian Gibraltar tells of . the astonished cry of the French explorers on first seeing Cape Diamond , "Quel bee ! " ( What a beak !) which by an easy elision became Quebec . — From Cities if the World for November .

The publication of another volume from the pen or Bro . Dr . H . Landsdell will be welcomed by all who have read his former records of travels and adventures in Eastern lands . The new work is entitled " Through Central Asia , " and will contain an appendix on the diplomacy and delimitation of the Russo-Afghan frontier . It is a record of a journey through Turkistan , Bokharaand Turkmenia , of

, 12 , 000 miles , by water , by rail , on wheels , horses , and camels . It gives in narrative form much that has been published in a more detailed and statistical manner in the author ' s larger work ; adding , however , several engravings , and retaining the allusions to patriarchal and Persian customs which throw light on the ethnography of the Scriptures . The question also is discussed— "Do we know the

truth about Siberian prisons ? " Information concerning the diplomacy of the Afghan frontier question has been carefully gathered from the Government Blue Books , and the matter is discussed from a Russian , English , and general standpoint . There is added the author's itinerary , and two good indices . The work will be published by Messrs . Sampson Low and Co .

Now that the fireworks season at the Crystal Palace has closed , it has been decided to give every Thursday evening a promenade concert within the central transept , shut off from the naves by canvas extending from the floor to the roof . The vast area from the Handel orchestra to the great - 'tage is thus completely enclosed , and constitutes perhaps the largest concert-room to be found either

on the European continent or in America . Pertinent questions . What is more comforting in cold and damp weather than " Grant ' s Morella Cherry Brand y " ? What is more beneficial to the weak and aged than this wholesome tonic as recommended by Medical Men

What do Sportsmen and Travellers find more sustaining than a flask of this unrivalled liqueur , and for whom a stronger quality ( "Sportman ' s" ) is prepared ? Beware or imitations .

There is added the author's itinerary , and two good indices . The work will be published by Messrs . Sampson Low and Co .
