EXCEPTIONAL activity was shown by the brethren of the ^ TTakT" Province of Cumberland and Westmorland on Friday and District . Saturday of last week . On the former day they met at Whitehaven under the banners of Lodges Nos . 119 and 872 . Bro . the Earl of BECTIVE , M . P ., Prov . G . Master , presided , and all the lodges but two
were represented . On Saturday the scene was changed to Windermere , and there was a numerous gathering of members to witness the constitution of the new Lodge , Windermere , No . 2217 , and the installation of Bro . G . J . MCKAY , the able and deservedly popular Prov . Grand Secretary , as its first W . Master , the occasion being rendered additionally conspicuous
by the presence of Bro . Col . LE GENDRE N . S TARKIE , Prov . G . Master of the adjoining Province of East Lancashire , who received a cordial greeting not only from his brother Prov . G . Master , Lord BECTIVE , but also from Bro . L . F . B . DYKES , D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers and brethren assembled . On both days the proceedings passed
off . most successfully , the returns and financial statement of account presented to Provincial Grand lodge showing that Freemasonry was in a highly prosperous condition , while the address of Bro . the Rev . J . ANDERSON , as Prov . Grand Chaplain , at the consecration of the Windermere Lodge , like his sermon the previous day in Holy Trinity
Church , was a model of eloquence . But the most notable feature of the two gatherings was the hearty reception accorded by the brethren to Bro . Earl BECTIVE , whose valued services during the 20 years he has presided over them as their Prov . Grand Master are so generally appreciated ; nor will it create any feeling of surprise among our readers to learn that the
opportunity afforded by the visit of Bro . G EORGE KENNING to the Provincial Grand Lodge , in compliance with a special invitation , was turned to account , and that his lordship was presented by that brother with a Jubilee
medal of exquisite workmanship , which will serve the triple purpose of commemorating the Q UEEN ' S Jubilee , the services rendered to Freemasonry by the recipient , and the hospitality so generously extended towards his visitors .
¦ : ¦ * .. * * w WE have been favoured with a copy of the Report for 18 S 6 of the ' fie ^ evoielu proceedings of the Punjab Masonic Institution for Educating Association . t j ie Q ^ i ^ t -en 0 f Indigent Freemasons , and from the various returns and statements of account which are attached to it , we gather that
the Association is in a prosperous condition and admirably fulfils the purpose for which it has been established . It is true that some of the lodges contributed nothing during the year in question , while in the case of others there was an appreciable falling off in their subscriptions . But we are not inclined to lay much stress upon this point . We know that the
contributions of our own Charitable Institutions occasionally fluctuate in the wrong direction , but a year follows , sooner or later , in which there isa change in the direction of increase which fully , and sometimes more than , compensates for the previous diminution . On the other hand , there is now standing to the credit of the Association an invested capital of 50 , 600 rupees , and ,
what is better still , at the annual meeting in February last it was agreed to elect all the applicants for admission , so that there are at all events no rejected candidates lelt standing out in the cold . By this act the number of children which will be chargeable to the Fund during the current year is raised to 26 , and the estimated expenditure is set down in the budget as
6943 rupees , a large sum undoubtedly , but one which is well within the compass of the Punjab brethren to meet , as may be judged from the cash account for 18 S 6 . From this it appears that the receipts from all sourcesincluding not far short of 2000 rupees , interest on invested capitalamounted to over 10 , 44 1 rupees , which added to the balance brought
forward from previous account made a total of over 14 , 438 rupees . The disbursements for fees , & c , amounted to 5567 rupees , and there was also spent in the purchase of 4000 rupees 4 per cent . Government paper over 3973 rupees , the total expenditure thus reaching 9541 rupees , and the balance remaining in hand being 4897 rupees . With such a statement to
judge from , we imagine the Committee of Management will have no difficulty in making both ends meet at the close of the now current year . At all events , we congratulate the lodges and brethren in the district of the Punjab on the excellent work which is being done by their Masonic Association , and if more money is needed for its purposes , we are satisfied it will be forthcoming .
