mig ht extend and prevail , and be propagated by the various brethren in the ocalities to which they belonged . No hig her duty could be found than to endeavour to relieve distress , and to extend the benefits of education . He was glad to see that they had been so successful in Cheshire in the elections of children to the Educational Institutes , and he trusted brethren would not make one isolated effort , but would do all they could to spread their Charities

in all directions . It was a great satisfaction to him that the first time he should have been called upon to preside as Provincial Grand Master was at Crewe , the place where he was initiated over a quarter of a century ago . He did not know whether the brethren of the De Tabley Lodge of Knutsford would be willing to receive them for the next Provincial Grand Lodge , but if it should be their wish , he thought it would be felt as a compliment to himself , seeing that he had been connected with the De Tabley Lodge for

such a very long time . There was an occurrence that had come upon them very suddenly , although it had not been entirely unexpected . He alluded to the death of their late lamented Provincial Grand Master , Lord De Tabley , and deeply regretted that his lordship had been compelled from time to time to surrender his various duties owing to failing health . He asked the brethren present to join with him in a vote of condolence to Lady De Tabley and her family in the bereavement which they had sustained . ( Hear , hear . )

His Honour Bro . Judge HORATIO LLOYD , in seconding the vote , remarked that their late lamented Prov . Grand Master had endeared himself to them all in various ways in the past . The motion was then submitted to Provincial Grand Lodge , and carried in silence . The next business was the election of Prov . Grand Treasurer for the

ensuing year . On the motion of Bro . DUNN , W . M . 979 , Bro . T . E . Gibson , of the same lodge , was unanimously elected to fill the post . The PROV . GRAND MASTER afterwards proceeded to make a

presentation to the retiring Prov . G . Sec , Bro . E . H . Griffiths , who had filled the office for 48 years . The present consisted of a very beautiful and costly silver salver , and a purse containing 150 guineas ; and , on the motion of his lordship , seconded by Bro . LISLE , P . P . S . G . D ., a pension of ^' 50 was granted to Bro . Griff ths from the Provincial Grand Lodge Fund .

Bro . GIUFFITHS , who appeared to greatly appreciate the presentation , made a suitable acknowledgment . This being Jubilee year , the R . W . P . G . M . invested 10 brethren with Past Provincial rank , viz . * . —

The R . W . P . G . M . and his Grand Officers , Present and Past , were reported , and greeted accordingly . The Provincial Grand Lodge was opened in due form , when the first business was to call over the roll of lodges , there being 20 in the province , which were all represented , except two—1220 and 412 . The actual Prov . Grand Officers appointed last meeting were next called , when a few had tendered ample apology for absence .

The minutes of the last annual Provincial Grand Lodge were read and confirmed . In the absence of the Prov . G . Treasurer , Bro . Nelson , Bro . MCKAY , Prov . G . Sec , read a statement of accounts , which showed a balance of nearly £ 100 to the credit of the province . A few questions were asked , which received satisfactory replies , and the accounts were passed by a unanimous vote as read .

Bro . K ENWORTHY moved , and Bros . DICKINSON and Colonel SEWELL supported the motion , that Bro . R . J . Nelson be re-elected Prov . Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year , which was carried unanimously . The R . W . Prov . Grand Master then made the following appointments in Provincial Grand Lodge for the ensuing year : —
