of the finest provinces in the country . The active interest the Deputy Prov . Grand Master took in his duties was also remarked upon , and Bro . Cockerill said he believed it was the aim and ambition of all the Prov . Grand Officers to do their best for the welfare and interest of Masonry in the
province . Bro . G . Butcher was entrusted with the toast of " The Worshipful Master . " In the course of his remarks he traced the Masonic career ot Bro . Currall , and spoke of the great interest he had always evinced in promoting Masonry , and especially the welfare of the lodge . He believed it was Bro . Currell ' s ambition to occupy the position to which be had attained , and he wished him a happy and
successful year of office . He felt sure he would ably carry out the duties of the office in a manner equal to those of his predecessors ,, and that he had the success of the lodge at heart . He asked them to most cordially drink the health of their newly-elected W . M . The Worshipful Master , in replying , said he could not find words to express the intense pleasure he felt at meeting
them that night , and in occupying the position he did . Their expressions of goodwill towards him were very gratifying and encouraging , and tended in a great measure to remove the feelings he felt in occupying such a position for the first time . He had heard of some brethren entering upon their duties with fear and trembling , but that was not his experience , as he felt that was one of the happiest events in his
life , and one he should long remember . He entered upon his duties with the firm determination to carry them out to the best of his ability , and feeling sure that any little failures he might make would meet with due consideration at their hands . He hoped that when his year of office was completed he might find that he had given satisfaction to all .
Bro . VV . F . Tipler proposed "The Installing Master , " to which Bro . Jones ably replied . " The Initiates" was given by Bro . Haviland , and replied to by Bros . Bowden , Church , and Bull . formed , and the ceremony of installation proceeded with , Bro . E . P . Mead , P . M ., D . C , performing the duties of Installing Master in a manner which elicited universal admiration . The usual preliminaries over , the VV . M . elect , Bro . VV . Willoughb y Briggs , was presented to the Installing Master , and by him inducted into the chair of K . S . Subsequently the Festival of St . John was celebrated by a banquet held in the lodge room , several brethren who had not been able to attend the installation ceremony joining , amongst others being Bros . Stanley , Ogden , Allen , Reid , and Oliver .
After the banquet , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , Bro . Hothersall responding on behalf of "The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " lie said that he accepted with pleasure the duty of responding to the toast . It might be the only occasion upon which he ,
as a present Prov . Grand Ollicer could do so , for by the next installation he would be relegated to the company of Past Prov . Grand Oflicers . Bro . Hilton , I . P . M ., in a few very touching and expressive sentences , proposed "Thc Health of the Worshipful Master , " which Bro . Briggs , in his response , very warmly

acknowledged . The latter , in the course of a very eloquent and admirable speech , said it was with feelings of gratification that he rose to respond to so important a toast , feelings alike easily intelligible to those who had passed into the chair , and to those who had not . He would endeavour to justify the conlidence which had been reposed in him , and also try to sustain the reputation of the lodge , if not
for working , at least in the application of tnose three grand principles upon which the Order is founded , viz ., brotherly love , relief , and truth . Some men , he added , are born great , some achieve greatness , and some have greatness thrust upon them , but no Mason could be born great , he gains that distinction by application and study . In drawing attention to the Masonic Charities , the W . M .
imparted to his auditors the very gratifying intelligence that in connection with the East Lancashire Systematic and Benevolent Institution , the Concord Lodge claimed more Life Governors than any other lodge in the province . The W . M . next proposed " The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . E . Hilton , " at the same time presenting him , on behalf of the lodge , with a handsome gold jewel , in recognition of
services which he had rendered . Bro . Hilton returned thanks , and said he had never anticipated or expected anything in the shape of such a beautiful jewel . The toast of " The Masonic Charities " was proposed bv Bro . S . F . Simons , P . M . Bro . Hethersall , P . M . ( the Charity Representative ) ,
responded , and made a touching appeal on their behalf . He said that at all social boards of Masonry that toast should hold a foremost place , for such meetings would have the greatest charm abstracted from them if it were omitted . Bro . J . W . Thompson , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., Treasurer , in proposing the toast of " The Visitors , " said that one of the strongest injunctions and advices given to brethren was to
visit other lodges , for that was the means whereby they could improve themselves , and make a ^ daily progress in Freemasonry . The visitors responded . Bro . W . H . Horton , S . W ., in an exceptionally humorous and racy speech , proposed " The Health of the Installing Master and Past Masters of the Lodge , " whiclTreceived a
reply from Bro . Mead , the Installing Master , who said that that was the fourth time he had occupied such a position . Bro . Mead incidentally alluded to the recent loss b y death of Bro . Kenyon , P . M ., a member of the lodge , at the same time paying a very flattering tribute to the memory of the

of the finest provinces in the country .
