WEST LANCASHIRE AND ITS PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER .

It must have been an unspeakable consolation to Bro . the Earl of LATHOM , Pro G . Master , and Prov . G . Master of West Lancashire , to know that , in the terrible domestic calamity which befel him , now about a twelvemonth since , he had the fullest

sympathy of his brother Masons , not only in his own Province of West Lancashire , but likewise throughout the whole English Craft . We both hope and believe , too , that having found

himself once again prepared to meet his brethren and resume , at all events for a time , a portion of the many duties that devolved upon him he will derive additional comfort from the cordial welcome he received a short while since from the

representatives of West Lancashire in Provincial Grand Lodge assembled . His lordship has always shown himself so kindly and sympathetic towards all who have been brought in contact with him that he will not fail to

appreciate the more deeply the kindliness and sympathy of others towards himself . Hence the feeling of pleasure with which we recorded last week the leading incident at the recent meeting of our West Lancashire brethren , when , in recognition

of the many and signal services he has rendered to this Province during the last five and twenty years , they presented him with a testimony of their love and respect that was alike worthy of his lordship and the donors . There is no need for us to dilate

upon these services , or the services lie has rendered to Freemasonry generally—these , we believe , have been more than once described at length in these columns—but we need not hesitate about mentioning the principal offices he has held , or still holds ,

in the several branches of our modern system of Freemasonry . It ^ 35 years since his lordship was appointed by the then M . W . Grand Master' —the late Earl of ZETLAND—S . G . W . of England , receiving a few days later the appointment of Grand Principal

Sojourner of Supreme Grand Chapter . In November , 18 72 , after serving for a time as Dep , P . G . M . of West Lancashire , he was chosen to succeed the late Bro . Sir THOMAS HESKETH . Bart ..

¦ is Prov . Grand Master , and was formally installed in office early in the following year , while his appointment as G . Superintendent of R . A . Masonry in the same Province , dates from the 27 th January , 18 73 . Since then the number of lodges

in his Province has been very nearly doubled , and there has been a proportionate increase in the Royal Arch . In the Mark Degree he is , and for the last 22 years has been , Prov . G . Mark Master of Lancashire , and in addition , was for the three years from

18 7 8 to 1881 G . Master of the Mark G . Lodge . Till a year or two since he was Great Prior of the Order of the Temple , of which he is still Knight Grand Cross , and for many years has presided over the Supreme Council , 33 ° , of

the Ancient and Accepted Rite , as its M . P . Sovereign Grand Commander . As regards our Masonic Charitable Institutions , he has always taken the greatest interest in their welfare , and has at various times presided as Chairman at their Festivals .

Above all , ever since the installation of H . R . H . the Prince of WALES as M . W . G . M . and M . E . G . Z . of England , Lord LATHOM has held high office in Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter—from

1875 to 18 90 as Deputy Grand Master and Grand H ., and since the year 1 S 91 as Pro Grand Master and Pro Grand Z . In all the various offices he has filled his first care has been to do his

utmost to further the interests of Freemasonry , and we are glad to know that his fame as a Mason will be handed down to future generations of the Craft by the lodges , chapters , and other bodies which bear his name , or , rather , one or other of his titles ,

as their designation . May the connection between Masonry and him , which has resulted in so much honour to his lordshi p and such benefits to our Society , be preserved for many years ,

notwithstanding the very serious illness with which he has just been overtaken , of which the news reached us only a few hours after penning the above remarks ! The favourable reports that have since reached us are such as to justify this hope .

The Recent General Court Of Governors Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.

THE RECENT GENERAL COURT OF GOVERNORS OF THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

We regret exceedingly that the General Court of Governors and Subscribers of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys should have adopted the course they did at their recent meeting of voting an honorarium to their Secretary out of the funds of the Charity .

Let it be clearly understood that , in writing thus , we are not grudging the Secretary an honorarium . We have already spoken so hi ghly and so often of the eminent services he has rendered to the Institution , both generally , since he was elected Io

oiTice and took up his appointment in August , 1890 , and particularly , in respect of the Centenary Festival in June last , that only those who will not see would dream of charging us with such churlish intention . There is not , indeed , a word that Bro . EVE ,

as Chairman of the Board of Management , in moving the resolution , uttered in praise of Bro . McLEOD ' S efforts in connection with that now historic event , and the splendid success which crowned them , to which we do not most willingly subscribe . But

though we yield to none in our estimation of those efforts , we are of opinion that the Court of Governors has adopted a wrong course in its mode of recognising them . In the first place , we know of no special reason why the practice of leaving to the Board of

Stewards the pleasure of presenting some more or less substantial token of their gratitude to their own honorary Secretary out of the surplus at their own disposal should not have

been followed in this instance . Remembering , as we do , that the Board of Stewards for the Girls' Centenary and the Benevolent Jubilee had considerable balances at their disposal after defraying the Festival expenses , we have some difficulty in
