the lodge , to the P . G . M ., the D . P . G . M ., and Bro . Johncock , the W . M . of the lodge recommending the petition for approval , and was suitably acknowledged by the recipients . A vote of condolence was passed to the Grand Mark Secretary , Bro , Matier , upon the circumstances which prevented him from being present .

On the motion of Bro . STICKLAND , a vote of thanks was passed to the W . M ., Bro . Simcox , for so kindly presenting the furniture for the new lodge . The lodge was then closed . The banquet took place at Messrs . Layton ' s Rooms , where a capital meal was put on the table .

The W . M ., Bro . Simcox , presided , being supported by the Prov . G . M ., Bro . Viscount Valentia ; the Dep . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Tomkins ; Bro . C . E . Keyser , P . G . D . ; and a large number of other brethren . "The Queen and Mark Masonry" was proposed from the chair and dulv honoured .

popularity among the brethren . He also congratulated Lord Valentia upon his new appointment as Comptroller of her Majesty ' s Household . ( Applause . ) The PROV . GRAND MASTER replied in appropriate terms . He said his aim was to be a sincere Mason . As to his new appointment , he believed it carried with it the duties of Whi p in the House of Commons , where he was glad to have more to do than simply listening to the [ speeches , and being

bored by many of them while waiting for the division bell to ring . For the future he hoped he should be able to occupy his time more profitably in the House in the new duties entrusted to him . He thought a great compliment had been paid him by giving him the appointment ; but he was there that evening as a Mason rather than a Member of Parliament , and he thought it was a far pleasanter position —( laughter and applause)—for they were all

friends there that night , and Members of Parliament often found themselves confronted by enemies or at any time by difficulties not found in a Masonic atmosphere . He was glad to welcome the new lodge to the province , and said he thought it was in the right place . It had been secured by the local enthusiasm that existed in the cause of Masonry , and he wished it a career of much usefulness and prosperity . ( Applause . )

Other toasts followed , including " The D . P . G . M ., Bro . Tomkins , and the Prov . G . Officers , Present and Past , " to which Bros . TOMKINS and MARGETTS replied ; /' The Visitors ; " "The W . Masters' Night At The Doric Lodge, No. 2695, Harrogate.

MASTERS' NIGHT AT THE DORIC LODGE , No . 2695 , HARROGATE .

The ordinary monthly meeting of this lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Victoria-avenue , Harrogate , on Friday , the 2 ist inst . It is customary in many lodges in West Yorkshire to set apart one ni ght upon which specially to invite the W . Ms , of the lodges in the immediate nei ghbourhood . Advantage was taken of this opportunity by the W . M ., Bro . Thos . ' Woods , and the officers of the

Doric Lodge , and invitations were issued in all directions . These were heartily accepted , and , as a consequence , a large and hi ghly representative gathering assembled . The Doric Lodge , consecrated on the 23 rd of March of this year , has many friends , and it must be very encouraging to the W . M . of so young a lodge to find himself so numerously and influentially supported . The handsomely decorated lodge room was filled to overflowing .

Amonst those present were Bros . Thos . Woods , P . M . 448 ( the first W . M . ) : W . H . Wainhouse , I . P . M . ; W . Davey , P . M . roor , S . W . ; J . B . Griffiths , P . M . 1001 , J . Other members of the lodge—eight of whom have been added to the roll since the consecration—were also present .

The visitors were very numerous , comprising , amongst others , Bros . J . C . Malcolm , P . G . D . Eng ., D . P . G . M . ; R . Wilson , P . M . 289 , P . G . D . ; W . F . Smithson , P . Appleyard , 206 9 ; W . Battle , 1001 ; J . Haigh , 1211 ; Dr . Dennison , I 2 II J Dr . Frobisher , P . Bland , W . Crosland , F . P . Carter , J . W . Davenport , J . H . Davis , H . Dettmar , H . M . Woodhead , 2669 ; W . H . Wainhouse , S . W . Whaley , J . P . Warton , R . H . Walters , and Dr . Hinsley Walker .

After the lodge had been opened and the minutes read , the Deputy Prov . G . Master and the officers of Prov . G . Lodge entered . The business of the evening comprised one ceremony only—a raising . This was most ably and reverently conducted by the W . M ., assisted by his officers , every detail being carefully

rendered . Of course , in the hands of such brethren as Bros . T . Woods , W . M . ; W . Davey , S . W . ; and J . B . Griffiths , J . W . ; all of whom are Past Masters , a correct interpretation of the ritual is naturally expected , but this was something more , and it was the general opinion of the visitors , many of them brethren of large experience , that the work was exceptionally well done .

There being no other business of importance , hearty greetings were given and the lodge was closed . Dinner was served in the handsome sallc a manger of the Prince of Wales ' Hotel . Upwards of So sat down , of whom 60 or more were guests . After thanks had been given by the PROV . G . CHAPLAIN , the toast list was entered upon . The W . M . gave " The Queen . "

" The Health of the M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and the Officers of Grand Lodge" was proposed by Bro . THOS . WINN , P . M . ian , and responded toby Bro . RICHARD WILSON , P . G . D . The S . W ., Bro . W . DAVEV , had charge of the third toast on the list , that of "The Prov . Grand Master and the Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire . "

To this the Deputy , Bro . J . C . MALCOLM , replied . Other toasts followed , including , of course , " The Masonic Charities . " In reference to the Charities it was stated that the Doric Lodge , young though it was , had given most liberal and substantial help in raising the large subscription to the Boys' School so recently announced , and , as a start for the coming year , the W . M . had intimated his intention of giving io guineas to the Girls' School , 10

guineas to the Old People ' s Fund , and 10 guineas to the West Yorkshire Local Institution . This announcement was received with cheers . Doubtless with such an example set them other brethren will come forward . " The Health of the Worshipful Master" was proposed in glowing terms by Bro . WESLEY PUTTY , the Chaplain . It was received with enthusiasm .

Bro . T . WOODS , W . M ., replied . After "The Visiting Worshipful Masters , " to which Bros . CHARLES SCRIVEN , W . M . 1211 , and C . V . WOODCOCK , W . M . 1648 , made response , and " The Visiting Brethren , " " The Health of the Officers " closed the list . ' There can be no doubt , judging by results , that the Doric Lodge has fulfilled everything which was expected from it . Of course , there were objectors to its

formation . It was not needed ; it was going to damage the existing lodge ; and so on . The contrary has proved the case , for not only has it supplied a recognised want , but it has stirred the other Harrogate lodge to greater effort , and loot is in a more thriving and prosperous condition to-day than perhaps it has ever been . There is no rivalry between the lodges . It was believed there was room for both ; this has been clearly demonstrated , and no men have

been more fully justified in their action than the founders of the Doric Lodge The lodge , it is true , has been exceptionally fortunate in having so able , energetic , and business-like a Worshipful Master to preside over it in the first instance , but he has been well supported , and there seems every indication that Doric Lodge will become what Bro . Woods declares he will make it—that is "one big success . " To which we of this paper say " So mote it be 1 "
