MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement will resume its meetings on Tuesday , 8 th January , and on the following Tuesday Comp . Brown will deliver a lecture on the " Explanation of the R . A . Jewel . " The chapter will be opened at half-past six o ' clock .

The Duke of Albany Lodge of Instruction , No . 1 963 , has removed from the Rock , and now hold meetings at the Masons' Arms Hotel , 169 , Battersea Parkroad , S . W ., every Wednesday , at 7 . 30 p . m . A Quarterl y Communication of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland was held in Edinburgh , on the 19 th inst ., ComD . W . Mann , S . S . C .,

presiding , when the chief business was the election of a Grand Scribe , in room of Comp . W . Edwards . There were four candidates for the office , and Bro . R . S . Brown was elected by a large majority . One of the features of the Crystal Palace pantomime ( " Cinderella " ) is a stag hunt , with live stags , dogs , and horses ; this forms part of a grand ballet d'action ,

entitled "Autumn Leaves , " with dresses emblematic of forest trees and hedgerow fruits , carried out with ( great accuracy in form and tint , several of the effects being produced with hand-painted satin . An attempt has been made to tell the story of " Cinderella" concisely and dramatically , without the introduction of irrelevant incidents , topical songs , or political allusions , which tend to

confuse children and impede the action of the piece . The dressing of Cinderella for the ball is treated in a special manner . Her carriage , which is illuminated by electric light , is on a scale of magnifience never before seen in pantomime , and is drawn by cream-coloured ponies . The pantomime will be performed every afternoon at three o ' clock , and on Thursday and Saturday evenings at halfpast seven .

" —Waggish Clerk : " Well , Pat , I don't think I can give you a ten-by-fourteen , but I can let you have a fourteen-byten , if you think you can make that do . The concert and dance recently given at the Rodney Hall , under the auspices of the Everton Lodge , No . 823 , in aid of the Masonic Charities of the Province of West Lancashire , have resulted in a profit , after the payment of all expenses , of £ 27 . Out of this the sum of

£ 15 15 s . will probably be given to the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , the remainder being divided between the Hamer and the Alpass Funds . On the 17 th instant , Bro . Dr . J . F . Muir , J . W . 872 , was elected W . M ., and Bro . John Spittall , P . M ., Treas ., for the ensuing year .

At a meeting ot True Love and Unity Lodge , No . 24 S , held at Brixham on the iSth inst ,, Bro . John Wheaton was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . W . C . Gregory , P . M ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . John Scevell , Tyler . Bro . J . W . Atherton was elected as representative of the lodge on the Committee of Petitions . The installation ceremony and

banquet will take place on Monday , January 21 st . Every Freemason should possess the " Cosmopolitan Masonic Calendar , Diary , and Pocket Book " ( Gecrge Kenning , 16 , Great Queen-street , Lincoln ' s-Inn-Fields ) . The enormous mass of information packed within its pages justifies the title of comprehensive Masonic book of reference , which has been claimed for it , and which the

experience of 19 years' publication fully justifies . — Sheffield Daily Telegraph . We learn that the 14 th and concluding volume of "Messrs . Cassell and Company's Encyclopajdic Dictionary " is read y for publication . This work , which has been in preparation for nearly 17 years , will contain about 50 , 000 more words than any other existing dictionary .

Whilst "Webster ' s Unabridged Dictionary" fills 153 S pages , and the " Imperial Dictionary " 2222 , the " Encyclop : edia Dictionary" extends to no less than 5629 pages . CHRISTMAS TREAT TO POOR PEOPLE . —On the proposition of the W . M . of the St , Kew Lodge of Freemasons , at the last lodge meeting it was decided that the brethren of St . Kew should give a meat tea and

entertainment to a number of the deserving poor of the town on New Year ' s Eve . Subscriptions are coming in freely , and it is estimated that the lodge will be able to entertain between 300 and 400 persons . Clergymen and ministers of all denominations have been invited to send in lists of d serving poor , to whom tickets will be issued in due course . The tea will be served in the Victoria-Hall . — Western Gazette .

On Tuesday morning a serious accident befell Bro . Harry J . Butter , principal manager of the carriage department Royal Arsenal , Woolwich , and well known in the engineering world . Shortly before ten o ' clock Bro . Butter was walking round the works , and was near the sawmills , when one of the small locomotive engines which run up < n the narrow gauge railways about the Arsenal

roads , knocked him down and did him serious injury . The wheels passed over his left thumb , and his face and head were badly cut . He was taken on the engine to the Royal Arsenal Surgery , where Dr . Wilson and the other medical officers decided that amputation was necessary , and the hand was taken off at the wrist . The accident is attributed to the fog , as the engine was travelling slowly , and the driver is a careful man .

A meeting of the Shadwell Clerke Chapter , Rose Croix , will be held at 33 , Golden-square , on Wednesday next , the 2 nd prox ., Bro . H . H . Shirley , M . W . S . ; III . Bro . John Read , Recorder . Bro . Walter Abbott gave a concert at St . James ' s Hall on Thursday last , which was numerously attended , and proved a great success . Amongst other items of a long and varied programme , which lasted into

the small hours of the morning , may be mentioned a duet oni the mandoline and guitar by the Brothers Raynor , a performance on the violin by Bro . Abbott in his usual splendid style , and Mr . C . Goff in his incomparable performance' on the post horn , he being about the only performer of note on that instrument , having performed by special command before their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales .

The Robert Burns Lodge of Instruction , No . 25 , will resume its meetings on Friday , 4 th January , at 8 p . m , in their new Masonic Room , at Bro . Harvey ' s ( late Tupp ' s ) Restaurant , No . 8 , Tottenham Court road , when the ceremony of installation will be rehearsed by Bro . W . Wingham , the W . M . of the mother lodge . Through the personal kindness of the directors

of the Empire Theatre , all the employes of the establishment , numbering between four and five hundred , were provided with a Christmas present ; that of the ladies of the ballet , chorus , extras , and children consisting of a fowl and a jubilee two-shilling piece ; the remainder of the employes receiving a goose each . Bro . George J . Cosburn , of Newbury , has been appointed Secretary to the Berkshire Friendly Society

( established 1 S 72 ) , of which her Majesty the Queen is patron . On Thursday , the 20 th inst ., at a meeting of the Anchor Lodge , No . 1337 , held in the Freemasons' Hall , at Northallerton , Bro . J . Shepard Winn , W . M ., in the chair , Bro . Thomas Russell , S . W ., was elected W . M . for the ensuing year , Bro . Charles VVaistell , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . C . Palliser , P . M ., P . P . G . S . of W ., was re-elected Charity Representative .

During the last few days the Editor of " Little Folks Magazine" has been distributing a great number of dolls , scrap albums , toys , illuminated texts , and articles of work of different kinds , among the little patients of some of the children's hospitals and kindred institutions throughout the kingdom . These have been sent to him by his readers in competition for several prizes and medals offered

during the year . At a meeting of the Dunheved Lodge , No . 7 8 9 , at Launceston , Bro . John Nicholls , S . W ., was elected W . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . C . Parsons , P . M ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . J . Burt , Tyler . The installation of the W . M . will take place at the St . John's Festival , to be held on Tuesday , January 15 th .

The annual supper of the lodge of instruction in connection with the Lord Warden Lodge , was held at the Lord Warden , Lower Walmer , on the loth inst . The W . M . of the lodge , Bro . G . Beale , presided , Bro . J . Huntly , I . P . M ., occupying the vice-chair . A capital spread was provided , by Bro . J . R . Catt , and a most enjoyable evening was spent .

The Eliot Lodge , No . 1164 , held its annual meeting on Thursday afternoon , the 13 th instant , at St . Germans , when the installation of Bro . Roberts as W . M . was ably performed by Bro . Joseph Doney , P . P . D . G . D . of C , assisted by the following Board of Installed Masters Bros . J . Bedford Kerswill , P . P . J . G . W . ; W . F . Creber , P . P . G . Standard Bearer ; J . M . of the Excelsior Lodge , No . 1042 , took place at the Masonic Hall , Great George-street , Leeds , on the 20 th instant , in the presence of a large gathering of the Craft , including , in addition to the members of the Excelsior and of the other Leeds lodges , brethren from York , Ripon ,

Huddersfield , Ilkley , and other towns in the province . The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . Wm . Flockton , P . M ., assisted by Bro . Dr . Smyth , P . G . Chap . England . We very much regret to hear of the great domestic loss of our esteemed Bro . B y water , P . G . S . B ., by the sudden death of Mrs . Bywater , which sad event occurred on the 2 ist instant .

The Queen has been pleased to approve of the appointment of Bro . the Earl of Kintore to be Governor of South Australia , on the retirement of Sir William C . F . Robinson , G . C . M . G . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Bectiveand Lady Olivia Taylour left on Friday last for Egypt , where they intend staying the winter .

The Christmas Double Number of the Charity Record contains a special article entitled , " Royalty and Charitv , " giving the most complete list yet published of the medical and other Charities , with which the Queen and the other members of the Royal Family are more or less

activelv identified . The editor has received letters of acknowledgment and thanks for the article from the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales . Other features of the number will be particulars of the work and want of the Charities of London , and some details of the late Miss McKellar ' s munificent charitable legacies .

The Masonic Widows' and Orphans' Home , of Kentucky , has just issued its eighteenth annual report . The average number of inmates throughout the year was 200 . The Grand Lodge makes it an annual appropriation of 3700 dollars out of . the surplus . Bro . Jacob F . Weller is President .

The new Masonic Temple , at Arkansas City , Kansas , U . S . A ., was dedicated on the 5 th inst ,, in the presence of a large bod y of the Craft . Bro . the Rev . John L . Boyd , of Wichita , delivered the oration . A banquet followed . The Chinese Times states that the first railway

in China was officially opened on the 9 th ult ., when Viceroy Li travelled over it some distance . Eighty-one miles have been completed , Tientsin to Lutas and Tongshan , with five miles of sidings and branches . The line was designated and the work superintended by C . W . Kinder , and the Times states , will be continued to Pekin in one direction and in time also to southern and northwestern China .

No less than 15 , 554 persons passed the turnstiles on Wednesday at the People's Palace . A Bangor lawyer , who is noted for his absentmindedness , went up his own stairs the other day , and seeing a notice on his own door , "back at two o ' clock , " sat down to wait for himself .

I . N . Williamson , an octogenarian philanthropist of Philadelphia , has given five million dollars to found a mechanical school for boys , where they may be trained to a thorough knowledge of those trades now monopolised to agreat extent by imported workmen . The location of the school will probably be in or near Philadelphia . This is the second largest gift ever bestowed upon a single educational

project , the first being held by the Leland Stanford , jun ., University . The annual meeting of the Harmony Chapter , No . 156 , was held on the 19 th inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , Princess-square , Plymouth . The Principals elect were Comps . E . The foundation-stone of the new Masonic building for the Williamson Lodge , No . 949 , in North Bridge-street , Sunderland , was laid on the 20 th inst . We shall give a report of the proceedings in our next .

The annual meeting of the Carew Lodge , No . 1136 , was held on the 19 th inst ., at Plymouth , when Bro . T . B . Tresize was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year . The installing officers were Bros . E . Poor , P . P . S . G . D ., and G . Cassell , P . P . G . Stwd .

A correspondent sent from Hampstead two post-cards , addressed to himself , to care of a friend in Hong Kong , sending one via Brindisi and Singapore , and the other via New York , San Francisco , and Yokohama , requesting his correspondent in Hong Kong to re-address them back to him , but sending each by the opposite route to that by which they went out from London . He now states that both cards returned to him again on Christmas

eve , the one which went out eastward on October 12 , reaching Hong Kong November 13 , and was despatched back thence on November 17 , while the one westward , leaving London on October 10 , reached Hong Kong on November 23 , and was despatched on November 25 . The former took 73 days and the latter 75 days for the round journey , and the entire cost on the former card was only 2 d ., and the latter i £ d ., for a journey of over 20 , 000 miles .

Our New York brethren are talking of having a Masonic Jubilee the approaching Spring . The Committee on Hall and / Asylum , at the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge in June last , presented the following resolution , which was adopted : " Resolved , that in the event that the payment of the debt shall be completed before the next annual communication , the Grand Master be empowered to appoint such

Committee or Committees , and make and carry out such other arrangements as he may deem expedient to appropriately celebrate the consummation of this great undertaking . " It is likely that the event will be celebrated cotemporaneously by the Grand and subordinate lodges . —Keystone . King Humbert of Italy is a teetotaler and a nonsmoker .

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn , Bart ., has given an allowance of 10 per cent , to his Montgomeryshire tenants , and Mr . Bromley Davenport , M . P ., has also given 10 per cent , to his Calvaley tenantry in Cheshire . The annual meeting of the Glasgow Savings Bank

—the largest in Great Britain—was held yesterday ( Thursday ) , the Lord Provost presiding . The amount deposited is £ 4 , 880 , 000 , the depositors number 143 , 261 , whilst £ 4 , 400 , 000 are invested at interest in Government Securities . The deposits have quadrupled in 20 years , and nearly doubled in 12 years .

The English cricketing team , on Wednesday , commenced at Cape To . vn the second match of their South African tour , their opponents being Fifteen of Cape Colony . The visitors , who went in first , did not show to great advantage . Abel and Mr . BoAiden , followed by Hearn . e , made a good stand at the beginning , but the rest of the batsmen appeared entirely out of form , and the

wickets went down very quickly . Maurice Read , Grieve , and Wood were dismissed one after the other without adding a run to the score . Mr . Coventry hit up a useful 10 at the end of the innings , which finished with a total of 122 . The colonial team had lost two wickets for 49 runs

This work , which has been in preparation for nearly 17 years , will contain about 50 , 000 more words than any other existing dictionary .

Whilst "Webster ' s Unabridged Dictionary" fills 153 S pages , and the " Imperial Dictionary " 2222 , the " Encyclop : edia Dictionary" extends to no less than 5629 pages . CHRISTMAS TREAT TO POOR PEOPLE . —On the proposition of the W . M . of the St , Kew Lodge of Freemasons , at the last lodge meeting it was decided that the brethren of St . Kew should give a meat tea and

entertainment to a number of the deserving poor of the town on New Year ' s Eve . Subscriptions are coming in freely , and it is estimated that the lodge will be able to entertain between 300 and 400 persons . Clergymen and ministers of all denominations have been invited to send in lists of d serving poor , to whom tickets will be issued in due course . The tea will be served in the Victoria-Hall . — Western Gazette .

On Tuesday morning a serious accident befell Bro . Harry J . Butter , principal manager of the carriage department Royal Arsenal , Woolwich , and well known in the engineering world . Shortly before ten o ' clock Bro . Butter was walking round the works , and was near the sawmills , when one of the small locomotive engines which run up < n the narrow gauge railways about the Arsenal

roads , knocked him down and did him serious injury . The wheels passed over his left thumb , and his face and head were badly cut . He was taken on the engine to the Royal Arsenal Surgery , where Dr . Wilson and the other medical officers decided that amputation was necessary , and the hand was taken off at the wrist . The accident is attributed to the fog , as the engine was travelling slowly , and the driver is a careful man .

A meeting of the Shadwell Clerke Chapter , Rose Croix , will be held at 33 , Golden-square , on Wednesday next , the 2 nd prox ., Bro . H . H . Shirley , M . W . S . ; III . Bro . John Read , Recorder . Bro . Walter Abbott gave a concert at St . James ' s Hall on Thursday last , which was numerously attended , and proved a great success . Amongst other items of a long and varied programme , which lasted into

the small hours of the morning , may be mentioned a duet oni the mandoline and guitar by the Brothers Raynor , a performance on the violin by Bro . Abbott in his usual splendid style , and Mr . C . Goff in his incomparable performance' on the post horn , he being about the only performer of note on that instrument , having performed by special command before their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales .

The Robert Burns Lodge of Instruction , No . 25 , will resume its meetings on Friday , 4 th January , at 8 p . m , in their new Masonic Room , at Bro . Harvey ' s ( late Tupp ' s ) Restaurant , No . 8 , Tottenham Court road , when the ceremony of installation will be rehearsed by Bro . W . Wingham , the W . M . of the mother lodge . Through the personal kindness of the directors

of the Empire Theatre , all the employes of the establishment , numbering between four and five hundred , were provided with a Christmas present ; that of the ladies of the ballet , chorus , extras , and children consisting of a fowl and a jubilee two-shilling piece ; the remainder of the employes receiving a goose each . During the last few days the Editor of " Little Folks Magazine" has been distributing a great number of dolls , scrap albums , toys , illuminated texts , and articles of work of different kinds , among the little patients of some of the children's hospitals and kindred institutions throughout the kingdom . These have been sent to him by his readers in competition for several prizes and medals offered

The Christmas Double Number of the Charity Record contains a special article entitled , " Royalty and Charitv , " giving the most complete list yet published of the medical and other Charities , with which the Queen and the other members of the Royal Family are more or less

activelv identified . The editor has received letters of acknowledgment and thanks for the article from the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales . Other features of the number will be particulars of the work and want of the Charities of London , and some details of the late Miss McKellar ' s munificent charitable legacies .

The Masonic Widows' and Orphans' Home , of Kentucky , has just issued its eighteenth annual report . The average number of inmates throughout the year was 200 . The Grand Lodge makes it an annual appropriation of 3700 dollars out of . the surplus . Bro . Jacob F . Weller is President .

The new Masonic Temple , at Arkansas City , Kansas , U . S . A ., was dedicated on the 5 th inst ,, in the presence of a large bod y of the Craft . Bro . the Rev . John L . Boyd , of Wichita , delivered the oration . A banquet followed . The Chinese Times states that the first railway

in China was officially opened on the 9 th ult ., when Viceroy Li travelled over it some distance . Eighty-one miles have been completed , Tientsin to Lutas and Tongshan , with five miles of sidings and branches . The line was designated and the work superintended by C . W . Kinder , and the Times states , will be continued to Pekin in one direction and in time also to southern and northwestern China .

No less than 15 , 554 persons passed the turnstiles on Wednesday at the People's Palace . A Bangor lawyer , who is noted for his absentmindedness , went up his own stairs the other day , and seeing a notice on his own door , "back at two o ' clock , " sat down to wait for himself .

I . N . Williamson , an octogenarian philanthropist of Philadelphia , has given five million dollars to found a mechanical school for boys , where they may be trained to a thorough knowledge of those trades now monopolised to agreat extent by imported workmen . The location of the school will probably be in or near Philadelphia . This is the second largest gift ever bestowed upon a single educational

project , the first being held by the Leland Stanford , jun ., University . The annual meeting of the Carew Lodge , No . 1136 , was held on the 19 th inst ., at Plymouth , when Bro . T . B . Tresize was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year . The installing officers were Bros . E . Poor , P . P . S . G . D ., and G . Cassell , P . P . G . Stwd .

A correspondent sent from Hampstead two post-cards , addressed to himself , to care of a friend in Hong Kong , sending one via Brindisi and Singapore , and the other via New York , San Francisco , and Yokohama , requesting his correspondent in Hong Kong to re-address them back to him , but sending each by the opposite route to that by which they went out from London . He now states that both cards returned to him again on Christmas

eve , the one which went out eastward on October 12 , reaching Hong Kong November 13 , and was despatched back thence on November 17 , while the one westward , leaving London on October 10 , reached Hong Kong on November 23 , and was despatched on November 25 . The former took 73 days and the latter 75 days for the round journey , and the entire cost on the former card was only 2 d ., and the latter i £ d ., for a journey of over 20 , 000 miles .

Our New York brethren are talking of having a Masonic Jubilee the approaching Spring . The Committee on Hall and / Asylum , at the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge in June last , presented the following resolution , which was adopted : " Resolved , that in the event that the payment of the debt shall be completed before the next annual communication , the Grand Master be empowered to appoint such

Committee or Committees , and make and carry out such other arrangements as he may deem expedient to appropriately celebrate the consummation of this great undertaking . " It is likely that the event will be celebrated cotemporaneously by the Grand and subordinate lodges . —Keystone . King Humbert of Italy is a teetotaler and a nonsmoker .

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn , Bart ., has given an allowance of 10 per cent , to his Montgomeryshire tenants , and Mr . Bromley Davenport , M . P ., has also given 10 per cent , to his Calvaley tenantry in Cheshire . The annual meeting of the Glasgow Savings Bank

—the largest in Great Britain—was held yesterday ( Thursday ) , the Lord Provost presiding . The amount deposited is £ 4 , 880 , 000 , the depositors number 143 , 261 , whilst £ 4 , 400 , 000 are invested at interest in Government Securities . The deposits have quadrupled in 20 years , and nearly doubled in 12 years .

The English cricketing team , on Wednesday , commenced at Cape To . vn the second match of their South African tour , their opponents being Fifteen of Cape Colony . The visitors , who went in first , did not show to great advantage . Abel and Mr . BoAiden , followed by Hearn . e , made a good stand at the beginning , but the rest of the batsmen appeared entirely out of form , and the

wickets went down very quickly . Maurice Read , Grieve , and Wood were dismissed one after the other without adding a run to the score . Mr . Coventry hit up a useful 10 at the end of the innings , which finished with a total of 122 . The colonial team had lost two wickets for 49 runs
