THEALEXANDRIACIGARETTECO.'S NEWBRAND. DRAGOUMIS. PREPARED OF THE PUREST TURKISH TOBACCOS . The highest classes of tobacco , however , are converted into the well-known " Dragoumis , " for which the Alexandria Cigarette Company have gained a deservedly high reputation , and we have no hesitation in saying , after a practical test so far as our taste and judgment permit , that they are superior to any we have yet tried , either imported or otherwise . — Whitehall Review . Their latest brand , " Dragoumis , " made of a skilful blend of fine Egyptian tobaccos , is full of flavour , yet delicately fragrant enough to please the most fastidious palate . We shall be surprised if " Dragoumis " do not prove the cigarette of the season . —Pump Court .

" P » With reference to the silver one mentioned by Marvin ,

I very much doubt the authenticity of this specimen , and think the suggestion made by Bro . Hughan that it is an ordinary one " silvered " as the correct solution . I was in correspondence with Mr . Batty , of Manchester , on the subject of these Masonic Halfpenny Tokens some years ago , and he then knew nothing of any silver specimens . This is borne out by the origin of these pieces . At the latter

end of last century , there was a great dearth of copper coinage , and the want was supplied by private enterprise , until it was made illegal , by Act of Parliament , to issue tokens . Hence the origin of these pieces . Batty , in his work , enumerates and describes about 6000 separate and distinct specimens , all in base metal , so that it is easy to understand how these tokens were used in supplementing

the deficiency of copper coinage . I have in my collection of medals about 16 out of 23 specimens mentioned by Batty . Should any of your correspondents have come across any other specimens than those enumerated , or referred to by Bro . Hughan , I hope they will send you a full description for publication for Masonic numismatists to " note up . " GEO . L . SHACKLES .

823 ] THE 33 IN A . D . 179 6 !!! In the "Masonic Chronicle , " New York , for Dec , 1888 , a very curious and important article is given , entitled "Historical Facts , " and an extract is furnished from Duponte ' s "Encyc . Maconnique , " Vol . III ., p . 390 , Edit . 1823 , in which it is stated that " we have seen , handled , and copied precisely a patent of the thirty-third , delivered

by a Consistory in Geneva in 1797 to \ V . Bro . Vile , an active officer of the Grand Orient of France . " It has been generally believed that the arrangement of the Rite into 33 degrees did not take place before 1801 , but this certificate states " At the Or . of the Univer . is a very holy place of the Metropolitan L . of Scotland , established at Geneva by the numbers : 77 / . H . \ S . \ U . \ The year of Masonry

5796 . " This is a crux surely , and , if correct , must date back the 33 degrees several years . The Patent runs " In the name and under the auspices of the Metropolitan G . \ L . \ in Scotland , and underthe Celestial Canopy of the Zenith at the 24 th deg . long ., and 44 th deg . m . Iat . ' . To our 111 . ' . S . \ G . \ Inspectors-General , Freemasons of all

Gr . \ ancient and modern , spread over the face of the two Hemispheres , Health , Strength Union , " and the degrees noted thereon are the 30 th , 31 st , 32 nd , and 33 rd . Setting aside the apocryphal reference to Scotland , the fact remains that the A . and A . Rite ( of 33 degrees ) was known prior to 1801 , if this statement can be authenticated . CHISHOLM . ¦

CHISHOLM . ¦
