Instruction , a Life Sunscribcrship . which be appreciated as a great humour both to the Lodge and himself . He ( rusted that he should have a successful year and plenty of work , and that when his time was up he should hand his successor the affairs of the lodge in a sound and prosperous condition . TheW . M ., in proposing the toast of "The Initiates , " said he had great pleasure in introducing to them two

brethren , who , he was sure , would be an acquisition to the lodge—one the son of an eminent Mason , and the other a brother of one of their members . He had known them both for some time , and felt sure they would justify the estimate he had formed of them , and that they would become good Masons , and an honour to the ancient Fraternity into which they had just been initiated .

Bro . W . Barringer thanked the brethren for the honour they had done him in admitting him as one of their members . He should strive to be a good Mason and a credit to their lodge . His father was surgeon to the Girls' School for years , and when he thought of him it almost brought tears to his eyes , so highly was he esteemed by all for his good qualities . He begged to thank the brethren most

heartily Bro . Brusey also briefly thanked the brethren for having accepted him as one of their members . The Worshipful Master next proposed "The Health of the Visitors , " whom he said Ihey were always pleased to see . He regretted there were so few present on that occasion , especially his esteemed brother and neighbour ,

Major George Lambert , P . G . Swd . Bearer , who would have had a hearty welcome from all , but hoped that those who were present had spent an enjoyable evening . He would call on Bro . Skinner , who accompanied him on his late visit to the United States , and his old friend , Bro . Hancock , to reply . Bro . Skinner , in reply , expressed the pleasure it always

gave him to be in their W . M . 's company ; his genial and amiable qualities rendered him one of the most pleasant travelling companions he had ever had , and their late visit to America would long remain in his memory as one of the most pleasant times he had ever spent . Bro . Hancock thanked the brethren for the very hearty reception they always gave him . He said their W . M . and

himself were such constant visitors at each other's lodges that they seemed more like members than visitors . In proposing the toast of "The Past Masters , " the W . Master said it gave him great pleasure in proposing that toast . The Past Masters had always shown themselves ready and willing at all times to assist the Master in his duties , with a zeal for the general welfare of the lodge that

was seldom excelled . He was sorry there were not more present , but was sure some good reason kept them away . Bro . S . Jacobs , in a humorous speech , thanked them for the hearty way in which they had drunk to their health . They always tried to do their best for the Covent Garden Lodge , as he was sure it was always a great encouragement to the younger members to see the continued interest

they took in the affairs of the lodge after having passed the chair . The toast of " The Officers " was next given , and responded to by Bros . S . Hewett , S . W . ; G . H . Reynolds , J . W . ; and Woodward , S . D . The Tyler ' s toast brought a most pleasant evening to a close .

The toasts were interspersed with some excellent singing under the direction of Bro . T . C . Seary , who very efficiently presided at the piano . White , 12 S 4 ; and others . The dinner having been enjoyed , the usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts were honoured . Bro . Naylor , I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of "The W . M ., " said they were all aware of the great success that

up to the present had attended their W . M ., and how pleased they were to see him installed , and for the first time presiding over them in their new home . He foresaw a long and continual success for the lodge , and a prosperous finish of their esteemed W . M . 's yearot office . His greatest aspiration was that they might so increase in numbers as to fill that magnificent hall with brethren of the lodge , and that the great ability of their W . M . would be continued to his successor , and successors , for many years

to come . Bro . Miller , who was loudly cheered on rising to respond , said it was very gratifying to find that his endeavours to please them , in the manner in which he carried out his duties , met with their approbation . The task , undertaken by him in July last , was no common or easy one , for he knew that the brethren of the lodge were not easily pleased

in the matter of the Master's working ; it must be as near perfect as possible to satisfy them . With that warning in view he had set to work , and trusted that he had satisfied them hitherto '; if so , so it would he till he vacated that chair , of which he felt so proud , to his successor . He cordially thanked them for the toast , and resumed his seat amid applause .

The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of " The Past Masters , " said he was exceedingly pleased to be supported by such an excellent array of Past Masters , all of whom had done good work in and for the lodge . They did not come only once or twice a year , but meeting after meeting they were all at their post to assist the W . M . and place their services at the hands of the lodge , which services

were always given most ungrudgingly . He called upon Bros . Naylor and Roberts to respond . Bro . Naylor said he could only sing the old song that he had sung ever since it had been his duty to respond to the toast , and that was to thank them most heartily for the genial manner in which they always received the toast . Bro . Roberts was in hopes that he should not have

been called upon to make a speech that night , yet as the W . M . had named him he would also thank them . Ihere was another thing he desired to do now he had the opportunity , and that was to thank them very much for tneir hearty support of his late Stewardship at the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Festival , which had enabled him to take up the handsome sum of £ 90 to the fund ; while upon

a former occasion they gave him £ 30 , for that also he was glad of the opportunity of thanking them , and did so most heartily . Several other toasts followed , and some really fine singing and instrumental music added a rate charm to the affair . Bro . H . Roberts , son of Bro . Roberts , P . M .,

presided at the piano , and played selections splendidly , and Bro . Quartermaster Sergt . Browne played an oboe solo delightfully . Bro . Sergt . Walker pleased everyone by his splendid work on the ' cello , and Bro . Bidgood . was effective with his violin . Bros . Hobson , Palmer , Tufnell , and others sang songs , and generally added to the harmony , for which our thanks are due .

DERBY . —Arboretum Lodge ( No . 731 ) . —Ori Wednesday , the 13 th inst ., the brethren of this lodge celebrated their annual festival , when Bro . S . Taylor was duly installed W . M . for the ensuing year . Known as the most flourishing and prosperous lodge in the Province of Derbyshire , the Arboretum enjoys a wide and deserved popularity , and its annual festival is looked forward to with

marked delight by brethren of the home and neighbouring provinces . As a rule the noble home of Masonry in Derby is filled to overflowing on these occasions , but in the present instance , in honour of the incoming W . M ., the muster roll exceeded all past experience . Amongst the 130 brethren who signed the Tyler ' s book were the following : Bros . Sir John Smith , P . M . ; Thos .
