Repores Of Masonic Meetings.

The Installing Master was the retiring W . M . of the lodge , Bro . J . W . Brigg , whose calm , dignified rendering of the ceremony established a studied perfection , and elicited , at its close , the warmest praise of the brethren present , whilst it reflected a well merited honour upon tbe lodge . The W . M . invested his officers as follows : Bros . John Walker , ' S . W . ; Geo . Southerland , J . W . ; Rev . T .

Orrell , P . P . G . C , Chap . ; W . Whittaker , P . P . G . R ., Treas . ; W . H . Wright , Sec ; John Jones , S . D . ; Wm . Todd , J . D . ; G . H . Ward , D . of C . ; Alfred Smith , I . by songs and music of the band , under the conductorship of Bro . H . L . Dodd . The toast of " The Worshipful Master " was given by Bro . W . Whittaker , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., who referred to Bro . S . Taylor as a man of known character and proven uprightness , alike in the business and the Masonic world , especially honoured for his steadfast devotion to those

elements of the Craft which tried so much to elevate and enoble the mind of man , and particularly one of such untiring zeal as Bro . Taylor . Having himself initiated Bro . Taylor , and also Bro . Brigg , into Masonry , he claimed by this alone to have done his duty to their noble Order , and trusted he had likewise added to the happiness Bro . Taylor would now derive from his elevated position .

The W . M ., in a well chosen response , assured all present that the honour and responsibilities of the lodge would be his first and chief care during his year of office , that he would cherish the evident signs of welcome and goodwill that night and on all other occasions evinced towards him by the brethren , and that he would strive to merit the confidence which had called him to the chair so

long as he might remain its occupant . "The Visiting Brethren" was given by Bro . Sir John Smith , and responded to by Bros . Orme , P . M ., and Thos . Shipton . "The Installing Master" was proposed by Bro . John Brown , Bro . J . Whittaker Brigg responding .

" The Past Masters of the Lodge " was proposed by the Chaplain , Bro . Orrell , Bros . Bland , P . M ., and Home , P . M ., responding . " 1 he Masonic Charilies " was ably given by Bro . G . T . Littleton was then raised to the Sublime Degree of a

M . M ., and Bro . Henderson passed to the F . C . Degree ; both ceremonies being ably performed by the W . M ., who is an excellent woiker . As a compliment to Bro . Chapman , P . M ., the W . M . requested him to initiate the candidates , of whom he proposed one and seconded the other , and the working tools were presented by the J . W . The W . M . then resumed his seat , and after "Hearty good wishes" from

the visitors , the lodge was closed , but not until it was announced that the W . M . would go up as Steward for the Boys , and the l . P . M . for the Girls , at the approaching Festivals . A vote of £ 5 was granted to each from the lodge funds . A very pleasant time was then passed at refreshment , » nd the usual toasts proposed .

Referring to the work in lodge , Bro . Gardner said he prided himself on the proficency of the officers of No . 2012 , but he admitted that they could not excel those of the Dobie . Bro . Saunders , a visitor from Cumberland , endorsed Bro . Gardner ' s remarks .

The W . M ., in proposing "The Health of his Officers , " expressed the pleasure it had given him to be so well backed up by them in the work , and specially referred to the way in which the Deaccns , who are both young Masons , discharged their duties . Repores Of Masonic Meetings.

After the usual loyal and official toasts had been drunk with musical honours , the W . M . rose and asked the brethren to fill their glasses , as he had now not only a pleasing and important duty , but as far as he knew , a novel duty to perform , and that was , as thev all well knew , to propose "Ihe Health of Bro . Merrick B . Bircham , P . M ., " on his attaining the Jubilee of his initiation into Freemasonry .

He did not mind making a spech in an ordinary way , but having such an important duty to perform , and being fully impressed with the honour it was to have to propose such a toast to such a worthy recipient , they must pardon all his shortcomings of speech . They would all admit that it was also an honour to them lo have such a guest of the evening as Bro . Bircham . If they had searched England all round

they could not have found a brother more woithy . Through some words spoken by our brother at the last installation it was known that his J ubilee in Masonry was near , and Bro . Sherington , P . M ., at once seized on the thought and proposed to honour the occasion by a suitable present , to which nearly all the members of the lodge had subscribed . Bro . Bircham was initiated on 13 th March ,

1 S 39 , was present at the consecration of the Joppa Lodge , in 1866 , was W . M . in 1 S 67 and 1 S 71 , besides acting as Deputy many times . He had also acted as Installing Master ever since 1871 . Addressing Bro . Bircham , the W . M . said : It is now my duty and pleasure to present to you this jewel , which has been specially designed for the occasion , and knowing vour lifelong connection with

foxhunting as well as Freemasonry , we have tried to commemorate both in the jewel . I trust you will receive this as it is given to you , as a token of respect for you in the past and of hope for your future career . We hope we shall have the pleasure of seeing you wear it for many years , and when in the course of time you may be called to a different sphere , we hope that you may rest your head

on the breast of the Great Architect of the Universe with as much happiness as I now rest this jewel on your breast . On rising to respond , Bro . Bircham was received with " three times three , " while some good fox-hunters could not keep from giving the usual " whoops . " Bro . Bircham said that they all knew he would rather ride any distance than make a speech . He felt a perfect

cripple in that , and should like to say what he wanted , but could not . He was initiated in the Royal Athelstan Lodge , No . 19 , in 1839 , and after 12 years in London , came down to Norfolk . At that time Masonry in Norfolk was at a very low ebb ; it was quite difficult to get a lodge . However , all that was changed , and he was proud of belonging to Norfolk , and to Joppa Lodge in particular . His innings

could not be a long one now ; but as long as he lived he hoped to assist in installing the W . M . 's of Joppa Lodge . He could not say a fourth of what he wanted , but they must take the will for the deed . The other usual toasts were given , and suitably responded to . During the evening songs were sung by Bros . Goddard ,

Loynes , Wainwright , and H . S . Smith . The jewel , which was designed and manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , bore the following inscription : "Presented to Bro . M . B . Bircham , P . M ., by the brethren of the J * ppa Lodge on the 50 th anniversary of his initiation . "
