Original Correspondence .

[ Wc do not hold ourselves responsible for , or even approving of the opinions expressed by our correspondents , but we wish in a spirit of fair play to all to permit—within certain necessary limits—free discussion , ] — IMMEDIATE PAST MASTERS . To the Editor of the " Freemason . "

Dear Sir and Brother , Will some of your readers who are acquainted with the unwritten laws of the Craft , kindly reply to the following questions : — 1 . At an installation meeting , can the retiring Master claim to be invested as I . P . M ., or is the appointment in the hands of the incoming Master , same as the other offices of the lodge ? 2 . Can the retiring Master refuse to accept the office of I . P . M ., and if so what course should the Master take .

Original Correspondence.

when the refusal arises from contumacy , also when the refusal is unavoidable , as , for instance , when about to leave the country ? 3 . If the Master appoints a P . M . as I . P . M ., who is both able and willing to attend the lodge meetings , but is unwilling to act as I . P . M ., can he refuse to accept the office ? 4 . Can the Master , under any of the above

circumstances , or in the absence of any of them , dispense with the I . P . M . and decline to appoint anyone to that office ? I trust some of your readers will kindly reply to the above , and I shall be glad if you will give us the benefit of your opinion on the subject . I may mention that the bylaws of the lodge are silent on the matter of I . P . M ., the only possible allusion to the question being— "That at the

installation meeting the Master shall appoint and invest his officers , " and I am not sure whether the I . P . M . is an officer or not . April 25 th . W . M . [ There is no such officially recognised ollice as I . P . M .

mentioned in the Book of Constitutions , but by the unwritten law of usage the duties of the Past Master are entrusted to the I . P . M . In his absence , the senior P . M . present performs them , and we hold that the senior P . M . would also perform them in the event of the I . P . M . being present and declining to act as P . M . —ED . FM . \

THE JUBILEE MEETING AT THE ALBERT HALL . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Perhaps you are in a position to settle a point not quite clear to some Masons re the Jubilee meeting at the Albert HaU in June next , and ii you could kindly do so through your columns of next Saturday , it will be a great advantage to many lodges meeting during the next few

weeks . Will any Master Mason be able to attend the big meeting ( if chosen by his lodge as one of the five ) ? or will the five have to be chosen from those eligible for attending ordinary Grand Lodge , viz ., W . M ., P . M . ' s , and Present and Past Wardens ? You will , no doubt , see the great advantage to lodges to have this point settled by authority before they select the five members who may have the privilege of attending . — Yours faithfully and fraternally ,

MASTER MASON . [ The W . M ., if he wishes to do so , will no doubt take upon himself to represent the lodge , and the other four entitled to be present should , we think , be chosen by ballot from those members who are desirous of attending , or from the members of the lodge generally . —ED . FM . \

circumstances , or in the absence of any of them , dispense with the I . P . M . and decline to appoint anyone to that office ?

—ED . FM . \
