FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF DERBYSHIRE , 1892 . Bro . William Naylor is not only the efficient Prov . Grand Secretary , but also the editor for his province of this excellent and artistic annual . The particulars given are numerous and valuable , and the wonder to us is how provinces managed to do without such useful aids in the days of

yore . According to a capital custom , each year Bro . Naylor gives a portrait of some local Masonic luminary , this time the frontispiece being of the respected veteran , Bro . Thomas Cox , the D . P . G . M . of the Alark province . Surely 1 S 93 should contain a reduced facsimile of the ever

courteous editor r We hope it will . 1 here are 24 lodges in Derbyshire , and between them they reckon 241 C votes for the Charities , exclusive of 622 for the Mark Benevolent . The details of these and other matters are of a most interesting character , and prove how zealous and energetic is the Derbyshire Craft .

MADRAS MASONIC CALENDAR FOR 1 S 92 . The printers of this indispensable guide for Madras Craftsmen are also those of the " Indian Masonic Review , " the organ of the English and Scottish Fraternity throughout India , and they do all their work well . Who the Editor is does not transpire , but it must be a brother thoroughly conversant vvith the society throughout the district , and one who has the faculty of condensation , without sacrificing a

single item of importance . Bro . J . T . Greatorex is the District Grand Secretary , and probably the Editor of this able compilation . There are more particulars afforded in this annual than generally to be found in such publications , e . g ., fees on initiation and joining of each lodge , & c . Col . G . M . J . Moore , R . A ., is now the District G . M . of Madras , Grand Superintendant of the Royal Arch , Prov . G . M . of the Mark , and Prov . Prior of the Knight Templars , Bro . Greatorex being the Provincial Scribe in all these bodies .

Wills , the 'Installing Master , rendered the addresses in a most masterlv manner . The ballot having proved unanimous , Mr . W . H . Lee vvas initiated into the mysteries by the VV . M . most perfectly . Expressions of deep sympathy were expressed by the brethren for Bro . Burnett , P . M ., who is very deeply afflicted .

The business of the lodge being ended , the brethren adjourned to the banquet , supplied by Bro . C . G . Slawson . On the removal of the cloth the W . M . gave the toasts of "The Oueen and the Craft" and " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , ~ M . W . G . M . " in a truly Masonic style , which were as truly and loyally received . The next toast was that of " The Pro G . M ., Deputy

G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . remarking upon the excellent manner one and all carried out their duties for the benefit of the Craft . In reply , Bro . D . D . Mercer , P . G . P ., stated the pleasure it gave him at all times to respond to that toast . It seemed but as yesterday that he took part in the consecration of the Selwyn Lodge , and he should have been delighted to attend

more often , only the night of meeting clashed with his business . He had , however , promised the VV . M . to attend on the present occasion , and he was confident the lodge would go on and prosper . It vvas not the quantity the lodge should boast of , but the quality , and it behoved all to be most careful as to the initiates introduced . His Royal Highness took a great interest in Freemasonry , and he

vvas most careful that the brother who might be called to lake Grand honours vvas worth y and honourable to ( ill the position . He might say a Grand Officer of Tennessee vvas present at the Selwyn Lodge some time ago , and he vvas delighted with the manner the ritual was carried out . and had spoken of the same on his return to America , vvhich was reported in the paper . That certainly spoke most highly

for the Selwyn Lodge , and he vvas delighted at being present that evening to witness such . The toast of "The VV . M . " was given by Bro . Wills , I . P . M ., vvho stated in highly complimentary terms that he himself having entered on a new roll , vacated the chair in favour of one with whom he had worked hand in hand for several years , and he was confident that Bro . Lightfoot

would carry out the duties vvith great credit to the lodge . During the coming year he would have the heartiest good wishes and co-operaiion of all the brethren , the same that had been extended to him during the past year . Having entered the year with such eclat it promised well for a most glowing success . In reply , the Worshipful Master thanked all most heartily for such a cordial greeting . He had looked forward to filling

this position , and having attained it was proud of being thc W . M . of this his mother lodge . He trusted vvith the kind assistance of the Past Masters and , as a dutiful son , the prestige of the lodge would be fully maintained , lt gave him extreme pleasure to preside over such a grand meeting . It vvas a purely local lodge , and its great success fully justified the founders in their application for the warrant . For

such a cordial greeting he hearlily thanked the brethren . The toast of " The Initiate " was given by the VV . M ., who remarked that it vvas a most important one . Their initiate had been known to him ( the VV . M . ) for many years as a near neighbour , and having gone through the ceremony vvith such rapt attention , he trusted they would for many years still be more closely allied to each other . He

was confident he would make a good and true Mason . The Initiate , in reply , thanked the brethren most sincerely for tbe honour done him that evening . He had been very deeply impressed , and only wondered why he had not joined years ago . He would endeavour to prove himself worthy of the Craft . The VV . M . next gave the toast of "The Installing Master , " and stated ithad been the most interesting part

to him . lt vvas the JIIIC i / mi nmi of the lodge for a W . M . to install his successor , and he doubted if ever the ceremony had been worked better . Bro . Wills had had a most successful year of ofiice , and had beaten the record . Certainly it was due to his great ability ; he was a leader of men in every sense of the word . They vvere all particularly proud cf their LP . M ., and none more richly deserved the

jewel which he ( the W . M . ) had the greatest possible pleasure in pinning to his breast for his noble work , and vvhich had been unanimously voted to him . That jewel was no empty bauble , but thc outcome of the love and esteem of the brethren , and he trusted he would wear it vvith pride , and feel that the brethren of the Selwyn Lodge recognised his valuable services rendered during the pa-tyear . Personally the W . M . felt that Bro . Wills vvas a true friend , and he was

sure he was only echoing the sentiments of every brother in the lodge . Bro . Wills , in reply , thanked the brethren most heartil y for such a reception . He had fillei every office in this his mother lodge , and he was delighted in leaving the chair in at least having given great satisfaction . He had worked to the best of his ability , and would take that opportunity of once more thanking the officers for having so ably supported him during the past year , and he was sure the same would bc extended to their worthy W . M . The lodge had

entered on another celebrated epoch , land he vvas confident it must prosper . He would again thank them for such flattering remarks and cordial greeting , and also for their very splendid recognition of his humble services . The toastof "The Visitors "—of whom there were 37 present—was given by the W . M . in high complimentary terms , and accorded them a hearty welcome .

Bros . Thompson , Rose , Hart , Freeman , and Perceval Nairne responded , and agreed as to the excellent working and the installation ceremony having never been worked better during their experience . Likewise that the true principles vvere fully carried out in the lodge , and that so long as that continued the lodge had a bright future before it .

The toast of " The Past Masters " received at the hands of the VV . M . very high eulogiums . Bros . Hook , Anderson , Wimble , and Gauntlett responded and promised the same hearty support in the future as in the past . The VV . M . next gave the toast of "The Masonic Charities , " remarking that the Selwyn Lodge of Instruction had

sent up over JL . 1000 to those noble Institutions . He thanked the brethren for allowing him and the I . P . M . to take up such a splendid list to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at the last Festival . Bro . D . D . Mercer , Vice-President of the Boys' and Girls' Schools and Vice-Patron of the Benevolent Institution responded , and congratulated the lodge of instruction on

the great interest the brethren took , for they had from 55 members sent up through the Secretary £ 231 to thc Benevolent Institution , which was highly commendable . On behalf of Bro . Terry , he thanked the brethren most cordially . The toast of " The Secretary and Treasurer " followed , the W . M . remarking there could not be found two more

worthy officers , who did their work splendidly . The Worshipful Master next gave the toast of "The Officers , " congratulating himself on having such an excellent array , for vvhich he vvas very grateful . He trusted he should have the same support extended him as had hitherto been given . The S . W . and J . VV . most suitably replied , acknowledgine

the compliment paid them all , and pledging themselves to do all that lay in their power to further the interests of the lodge . The Tyler's toast closed one of the most successful and happy meetings ever held . The musical arrangements vvere under the direction of

Bros . Hook and Sidney Hill , vvho were ably supported b y Bros . Horace Petley , Arthur Bentley , E . J . Wood , H . VV . Pickett , F . G . Nicholls , and Mr . A . G . Pearce . The banqueting room vvas beautifully decorated , the floral decorations being by Mr . J . Peyton . The jewel vvas manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

The lodge having been opened , the minutes of the last meeting vvere read and confirmed . The ballot being . unanimous in favour of Mr . Frampton , 4 ggIeton , and Causton were passed most commendably . The report of the Audit Committee vvas received and adopted . Bro . Hook , P . M ., the first Master of the lodge , then presented

Bro . J . Lightfoot , S . W . and W . M . elect , to receive the benefits of installation , vvhich the W . M ., Bro . VV . Wills , performed in a most excellent manner . Bro . J . Lightfoot , VV . M ., invested hisollicers most efficiently as follows : Bros . B . Morgan , S . W . * , A . Briant , J . W . ; L . Eagle , P . M ., Sec ; E . Eagle , Treas . ; H . R . Hobbs , S . D . ; T . Gay , J . J . Evans , Org . ; J . H . Stevenson , Samuel George , and F . H . Ford , Stwds . ; and T . Bowler , Tyler . Bro . W .
