In consequence of the holidays the attendance vvas not so od as ' ne attractions of the evening merited . After the S ° ' 1 duties had been performed , the Secretary , Bro . Huirhes , read a very able paper on " The Legend of the Third Degree , " vvhich proved intensely interesting and

eceived the closest attention from the brethren . A sketch r . ade by Bro . Lamborn appropriately illustrated one portion " f the paper and served to increase the interest in the subject . At the close of the lecture the W . M . invited criticism and narks from jne brethren and visitors , vvhich was responded Jo by several ( including Bros . Randell , Botley , Jenkins , lordari an < ^ others ) , all being unanimous in complimenting

, A . Hug hes on the ability and research displayed . Bro . g , \ V . Speth said he had no intention of criticising the paper , f ° r on me V * ' ' thought it vvas a remarkably alile production , placing the matter in a general light , vvhich rould not fail to be of interest and evoke thought in those lvho had listened to it . He desired merely to add a few notes by way of commentary , vvhich he trusted might add

to the interest of the evening . He then proceeded to favour the lodge with some very able observations , which afforded rauch instruction and information to the brethren , but many 0 ( his remarks and quotations are naturally not of a nature to be reproduced here . Suffice it to say the brethren vvho listened to him had a rare intellectual treat , which was much appreciated . After traversing various points in the paper ,

and th rowing much additional light upon the subject , Bro . Speth concluded by touching upon the sun-myth theory ( which had received Bro . Hughes' attention in the paper ) , and incidently supplied an explanation of the Masonic paradox based upon this theory , vvhich differed considerably from the usual one , which he called a quibble . Bro . Hughes , in responding to a hearty vote of thanks , expressed his

indebtedness for much of his paper to the very valuable and interesting papers read before the Quatuor Coronati Lodge and circulated among the Correspondence Circle , of which he vvas one of the earliest members . A very cordial vote , of thanks vvas also passed to Bro . G . W . Speth for

favouring the lodge with his attendance , and for the instructive speech he had made in further illustration of the legend . The transaction of another interesting detail of lodge business brought a very enjoyable evening to a close . We understand that Bro . Hughes has promised to read his paper at the June meeting of the Wellington Lodge , Rye . BURSLEM .

causes . The business ended , the brethren adjourned to Bro . W . Dentley ' s , Roebuck Hotel , for a social hour , the W . M . presiding , when the usual loyal and Alasonic toasts vvere P ~ . ^ honoured , and a pleasant evening was spent . The intervals between the toasts vvere enlivened by some capital music and songs by Bros . J . B , Davis , Organist ; trnery , Critchlow , and Heath .

'The lodge vvas opened in due form , and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . A ballot vvas taken for Bros . F . Mecey and C . A . Cox as joining members , and declared unanimous in their favour . The lodge was opened in the Second Degree , and Bro . A . Leighton , acting as candidate , vvas examined , and retired whilst the lodge was opened in the Third Degree . The ceremony of raisingwas rehearsed excellently bythe W . M .

Thc lodge vvas resumed into the First Degree , and Bro . Corp assisted in working the Gth Section of the First Lecture . Bro . H . S . Wellcome vvas unanimously elected VV . M . for the next meeting , and appointed his ollicers , and announced that the work would be the first ceremony , the charge , and the 1 st Section of the Second Lecture . Bro . Kirby proposed , and it was duly carried , that a very hearty vote of thanks and congratulation be given to Bro . VVest , and that

the same be noted on the minutes ot the meeting , for the excellent way he had presided over the lodge , and worked the ceremony of the evening , this being the lirst occasion on which Bro . VVest had occupied the chair of W .. VL , and he had done so in a way that reflected the greatest credit not only ujion himself , but also on the Clarence Lodge of Instruction , where Bro . West had proved such a constant member . Bro . VVest returned suitable thanks , and the lodge was closed .

At the close of the lecture the W . M . invited criticism and narks from jne brethren and visitors , vvhich was responded Jo by several ( including Bros . Randell , Botley , Jenkins , lordari an < ^ others ) , all being unanimous in complimenting

, A . Hug hes on the ability and research displayed . Bro . g , \ V . Speth said he had no intention of criticising the paper , f ° r on me V * ' ' thought it vvas a remarkably alile production , placing the matter in a general light , vvhich rould not fail to be of interest and evoke thought in those lvho had listened to it . He desired merely to add a few notes by way of commentary , vvhich he trusted might add

to the interest of the evening . He then proceeded to favour the lodge with some very able observations , which afforded rauch instruction and information to the brethren , but many 0 ( his remarks and quotations are naturally not of a nature to be reproduced here . Suffice it to say the brethren vvho listened to him had a rare intellectual treat , which was much appreciated . After traversing various points in the paper ,

and th rowing much additional light upon the subject , Bro . Speth concluded by touching upon the sun-myth theory ( which had received Bro . Hughes' attention in the paper ) , and incidently supplied an explanation of the Masonic paradox based upon this theory , vvhich differed considerably from the usual one , which he called a quibble . Bro . Hughes , in responding to a hearty vote of thanks , expressed his

indebtedness for much of his paper to the very valuable and interesting papers read before the Quatuor Coronati Lodge and circulated among the Correspondence Circle , of which he vvas one of the earliest members . A very cordial vote , of thanks vvas also passed to Bro . G . W . Speth for

favouring the lodge with his attendance , and for the instructive speech he had made in further illustration of the legend . The transaction of another interesting detail of lodge business brought a very enjoyable evening to a close . We understand that Bro . Kirby proposed , and it was duly carried , that a very hearty vote of thanks and congratulation be given to Bro . VVest , and that

the same be noted on the minutes ot the meeting , for the excellent way he had presided over the lodge , and worked the ceremony of the evening , this being the lirst occasion on which Bro . VVest had occupied the chair of W .. VL , and he had done so in a way that reflected the greatest credit not only ujion himself , but also on the Clarence Lodge of Instruction , where Bro . West had proved such a constant member . Bro . VVest returned suitable thanks , and the lodge was closed .
