Subsequently he joined the Buckingham Lodge , No . 591 , Aylesbury , and was installed in the chair as W . M . in 1873 , and thc British Lodge , No . 8 , of which he was installed W . M . in 1 S 79 , and which the same year he represented on the

Board of Grand Stewards . In 1 S 75 he was appointed Prov . Senior Grand Warden of the late Province of Berks and Bucks . He is also a Royal Arch Mason , having been exalted in thc Buckingham Chapter , No . 591 on thc 15 th October , 18 73 . He is a Life Governor of all the three Institutions and has served the office of Festival Steward once for the Girls' School , twice for the Boys' School , and once forthe Benevolent Institution .

and rose in time to preside over it as W . Master . In 1885 , he helped to found thc Drury Lane Lodge , No . 2127 , and was its first acting P . M . In 18 9 6 and 1 S 97 , he occupied the chair of Master , and is , therefore , at the present time the I . P . M . He is also a Life Governor of the three Institutions , and served on one occasion as Festival Steward in support of the Royal Masonic Institution for Hoys .

GRAND SWORD BEARER . Bro . Captain GLORGE HEAHN received his first commission in the King ' s Dragoon Guards , and served subsequently in the Jist Hussars , but an accident he met with in the hunting field so far disibled him as to prevent his remaining in

the Trainbands Lodge , No . 2524 ; and in 1 S 96 , the Military Lodge , No . 2621 , and Doyle ' s Lodge of Fellowship , No . 84 , Guernsey . He has also been a member of St . George ' s Lodge , No . 2170 , Ceylon , as well as of Lodge No . 107 , under the Irish Constitution , and the Donnie Doon Lodge , No . 611 , under the Scottish Constitution , both meeting in the same island . He was W . Master of the Irish Lodge , No . 107 , in 1892 , and on the _; oth July , 1 S 97 , was installed first W . M . of the

Military Lodge , No . 2621 , of which he was a principal founder . In addition , he is a R . A . Mason , having been exalted in the Tullamore Chapter , No . 321 ( I . C . ) In 18 SS he affiliated to the United Chapter , No . 1341 ( E . C ) , Hong Kong , and joined the Lanka Chapter ( I . C ) , No . 107 , Colombo , Ceylon , is a Past G . S . Br . of Guernsey and Alderney . He is also connected with other branches of Freemasonry , and is a Life Governor and past Steward of the Boys' School , but the work that he has done has been mostly under the banner of United Grand Lodge , and it is a fitting reward for his many and varied services that he should have had conferred upon him so honourable an office as that of Grand Sword Bearer of England .

DEPUTY GRAND SWORD BEARER . Bro . J H . RUTHERGLEN was initiated in the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge , No . 1642 , on the 9 th May , 1 S 7 S , and was installed W . Master in 1894 . He is also a member of the Kensington Lodge , No . 1767 , and when it was determined to petition the Grand Master for a warrant of constitution foralodgetobe connected

with the Poor Law Service he was unanimously requested to accept the office of Master . Accordingly , when the Hugh Cwen Lodge , No . 2593 , was consecrated in February , 1896 , Bro . Rutherglen was installed in the chair as first W . JL He is a Life Governor of our three Institutions , and has served ' as Steward for the Benevolent Institution , and the Girls' School , for the latter as the representative of

the Hugh Owen Lodge , his list amounting to thc very handsome total of 150 guineas . It will , doubtless , prove interesting to our readers if we state in addition , that Bro . Rutherglen , who is Clerk to the Guardians and Superintendent Registrar for Kensington , has for many years past taken an active and leading part in Poor Law Administration . As President of the Union Clerks' Association of

England and Wales , and Chairman for four years of the Superannuation Committee of the Poor Law Service , he was mainly instrumental in securing important amendments in the Local Govcrment Act of 1 S 94 , and the Poor Law Officer ' s Superannuation Act 1 S 96 , his services in this respect being recognised by a testimonial consisting of an address and cheque for . £ 1200 , which were presented to him by Bro . Lord Glenesk at a public dinner held in his honour in Jannary , 1 S 97 .

In 1872 he joined the Friends-in-Council Lodge , No . 13 S 3 , and in 1 SS 7 was founder of thc Cama Lodge , No . 2105 , having since occupied the chair in two separate years . Last year he took part in founding the Alleyn Lodge , No . 2 ( 047 , and was invested
