S . D . ; Phillips , J . D . ; and Gates , I . G . On the proposition of the W . M ., the Prov . Grand Master and Deputy Prov . Grand Master were elected honorary members of the lodge . The W . M . signified his intention of representing the lodge at the next Mark Benevolent Fund Festival , and expressed a hope that the members would loyally support him . The lodge was closed , and an excellent repast was

followed by the customary toasts . In giving " The Grand Officers , " the W . M . said they had all witnessed the ceremony of consecration performed by the Grand Secretary , who had taught them some excellent lessons , which he hoped the Ark Mariners lodge consecrated that day would deem worthy of following . They one and all welcomed such an excellent gathering of Grand

Officers , and especially the Grand Secretary of the Order , and as he believed that was Bro . Matier ' s first official visit to Croydon , he hoped it would not be the last by many . Bro . C . F . Matier , P . G . W ., G . Sec , said that after the kindly speech of the W . M . he should be wanting not onl y in gratitude but also in common courtesy if he did not rise at once to reply . Those Grand Officers who had been

present that evening and had received the kindly recognition of the W . M ., had endeavoured for a long series of years to do their best for the good of the Order in every way . Bro . Berridge had rendered distinguished service , and had been made a P . G . W . Bro . Driver had for many years been in the Order , as also had Bro . Carter . Bro . Hogard ' s name was a household word , and last , but not least , Bro

Vincent s services were known to them all in connection with the prosperity of the lodge of instruction . Bro . Rev . Cater , who had acted as Chaplain that night and delivered such a suitable oration , was , they would be pleased to hear , to be invested on 2 nd June next , by command of his Royal Highness the M . W . G . M ., as a Grand Chaplain of the

Order . On behalf of the Grand Officers he thanked them most cordially , and wished them every prosperity , not only in that lodge but also in the Royal Ark Mariners lodge consecrated that day . Bro . Nicholls responded to the toast of the " Prov . Grand Master , Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and Prov . Grand Officers . "

Bro . Fox Hawes , M . A ., I . P . M ., next said that the few words necessary to propose the toast of " The Worshipful Master" would be received with the greatest enthusiasm . That toast , no matter whether in the Craft , Royal Arch , or Mark , was always received with enthusiasm . It was entirely owing to the W . M ., Bro . F . West , that there was such a large assembly that evening , and during his year of office he would do all he could to promote the success of their lodge . Bro . F . West , W . M ., in reply , said he was exceedingly

obliged to the brethren for permitting him to occupy his present very proud position . He appreciated it because it brought home to him the fact that he had worked with a great many of them in another sphere for many years past , and he was sure it was a kindly appreciation on their part of what he had done elsewhere that prompted them to permit him to occupy that position on the present occasion .

It was now 20 years since he first saw the light of Masonry . During that time he had made many very valuable friends , and as far as he knew his friendship had been fully carried out . With regard to what one had done in Masonry , he could only say that he had endeavoured to carry out the spirit instilled into him at a much earlier period of his existence—a public school spirit , which was nothing more or

less than appreciating duty . From the first step a Mason took he realised there was one thing he ought to do , and that was , respect those placed above him , and he was taught what became those who rule . The great success of Masonry was entirely owing to the appreciation by those who entered of the fact that a man could not rise to success in the . Craft without [ going through the various offices .

He believed that all Masons in the Province of Surrey had been good enough to say and feel that he had endeavoured to carry out the onerous duties cast upon him for the past three and half years , and it was owing to that appreciation that he was occupying the chair that night . When at the very earliest period of his existence in that honourable Degree they put him in a position which

was emblematic of his cognomen , on the present occasion they had put him in juxtaposition . He thoroughly appreciated their kindness , and they would excuse his digression , but he wished to thank all those officers who , having worked up to the position they occupied 12 months ago , agreed to stand on one side to allow him to take precedence . He would use his best endeavour to

promote the success of that most successful Mark Masons lodge , and he looked to his brother officers and those who had passed the chair to assist him . As it was owing to them he was in his present position , he might tell them that the Grand Secretary had been good enough in consecrating

the Royal Ark Mariners lodge that day to convey to him the intelligence that the Grand Lod ge had permitted him to confer the rank of P . C . N , upon him , an act of kindness which he appreciated . He thanked the brethren for placing . him in the chair , and for responding so enthusiastically to the toast .

"The Visitors was next given , and responded to by Bro . Gordon Smith . The Worshipful Master next gave " The Past Masters , " to whom he said the lodge owed its present proud position . It was a matter of sincere congratulation that the Past Masters should take a continued interest in the lodge . Bro . Yaxley , P . M ., had been rewarded with Provincial

honours , and the lodge owed him a debt of gratitude for his labours . He was not wrong in saying that Bro . Hobbs , P . M ., was one of the most distinguished Past Masters of the lodge . There was also Bro . Nicholls , P . M ., who had rendered good service . He had to present the LP . M . with a jewel as an acknowledgment by the lodge of the duties so faithfully carried out by him during his year , and hoped

it might rank not altogether least among the numerous jewels on his breast . Bro . Fox Hawes , M . A ., LP . M ., in response , said that although he felt he had not done the work as he ought , yet during his year the lodge had increased , and its prosperity had been really and successfully attained . He thanked

them for rewarding his services with the handsome jewel , which he should wear as a mark of confidence and esteem . "The Officers" was duly honoured , and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . Bro . H . Schartau and several brethren rendered excellent musical selections .

S . D . ; Phillips , J . D . ; and Gates , I .

Carter . Bro .
