Obituary.

Obituary .

BRO . ALDERMAN SIR R . N . FOWLER , BART .,

M . P ., P . G . W . This distinguished brother , whose death occurred with painful suddenness last week , was one of the foremost citizens of London of our time . Had he confined his energies and the exercise of his great abilities to the business of banking , he would still have

stood high in the respect and esteem of his fellowcitizens . But a single occupation , however exacting , was not enough to occupy his mind , and he had barel y attained to middle age when the opportunity , of which he readily availed himself , was afforded him of taking an active part in civic affairs , and having , in 1878 , been

elected Alderman of the Ward of Cornhill , he very speedily made his mark as one of the Conscript Fathers of London . Having duly served the office of Sheriff , he was by good fortune elected out of the usual order of seniority to the Chief Magistracy , and installed in office in November , 1883 , and during the term of his

Mayoralty he succeeded in making himself especially popular , and when his successor , Bro . Alderman Nottage , died as Lord Mayor , after occupying the position for a tew months only , the vacant chair was offered to and accepted by Bro . Alderman Fowler , whose further services were of such a character that her

Majesty , by the advice of the Prime Minister , was pleased to confer on him a baronetcy . He was also the senior representative in the House of Commons of the City of London , and in his political , as in his civic , capacity had always shown himself , a sterling friend of the Corporation of London . As a Mason our late

brother had seen considerable service . He was initiated , passed , andraised in the Marquis of Dalhousie Lodge , No . 1159 , in the year 186 7 . In January , 18 70 , he was elected a joining member of the Lansdowne Lodge of Unity , No . 626 , Chippenham , and having filled sundry of the minor offices he was at length elected and

installed as its Worshipful Master in 18 7 6 . In 1880 he joined Grand Master ' s Lodge , No . i , and on the 2 nd January , 188 4 , during his tenure of the office of Lord Mayor , was installed as its W . M . " in the presence of a large gathering of the members and of the Grand Officers ot England . In the

following April his Royal Highness was pleased to appoint him to the post of J . G . W . of England , and in this capacity he presided very successfully as Chairman at the Anniversary Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . He completed his term of office as Lord Mayor of London , by entertaining the officers

and members of Grand Master ' s Lodge , No . 1 , and a very numerous company of the Grand Officers of England at a magnificent banquet at the Mansion House . But previous to this , however , he had assisted in founding the University of London Lodge , No . 2033 , and was appointed its first S . W . and second

W . Master . In 1886 , in conjunction with two of his predecessors in the civic chair , he assisted in founding Grand Master ' s Chapter , No . 1 , and when the chapter had been consecrated , Comps . Sir F . W . Truscott , Sir J . Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., and Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., were severally installed in the chairs of M . E . Z ., H ., and J . respectively . Two years

later Comp . Sir R . N . Fowler was installed in the chair of First Principal , and in 188 9 his Royal Highness the Grand Z . conferred upon him the office of G . S . N , in Supreme Grand Chapter . He was also a P . P . S . G . D . and P . P . S . G . W . of Wiltshire , and , as we have seen , took a considerable interest in our Charitable Institutions . His death , at the comparatively earl y age of 63 , and when his still vigorous constitution

appeared to justify the belief that he would still br > capable of rendering further and still more valuable services both in his civic and Masonic capacities , will be felt as a very serious loss both in the City , in \ jy ;] . shire , and in the Craft of Masonry . We tender our respectful sympathy to the surviving members of h ' family .

BRO . JAMES WILLIAM BALDWIN , P . M . , p , P . P . G . D . MIDDLESEX .

The Lebanon Lodge , No . 1326 , has been heavily visited during this month . On the gth inst . we re corded the death of its LP . M ., Bro . C . W . Baker , and now its highly-respected Secretary has passed over to the majority . Bro . Baldwin ' died on the 17 th inst after only a comparatively short illness . Initiated into

the Lebanon Lodge 16 th November , 1871 , he success , fully passed through the different offices , and became W . M . in 1881 . He was exalted to the Lebanon Chapter 20 th March , 18 73 , and advanced to the Degree of a M . M . 12 th October , 18 77 . In the cause of Charit y Bro . Baldwin was ever to the front . He was a Life

Governor of the three Masonic Institutions , and served as Steward on six or seven different occasions . He was appointed Secretary of his lodge in 188 7 , and devoted himself so earnestly to his duties and to the interests of his lodge as to call forth and to merit special commendation on several occcasions . If any

one branch of his work interested him more than another , it was that of advancing the cause of the Masonic Charities , and of eliciting sympathy and sup . port in forwarding the claim of some less fortunate brother , his widow , or child . It was largely due to the enthusiasm with which he always alluded to the

Charities that the . lodge held so many Life Governor , ships , and that induced so many brethren to act as Stewards . Bro . Baldwin was buried at Highgate , on Thursday , the 21 st inst . The coffin , of polished elm , with brass fittings , was covered with most beautiful wreaths . In the unfortunate absence , through illness ,

of the W . M ., the Lebanon Lodge was represented at the grave by Bros . James Lawrence , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C . Middx . ; J . J . Marsh , P . M ., P . Z ., P . P . G . Std . Br . Middx . ; F . Dunstan , S . D . ; W . H . Davey , and Harry Davey . In his death the Lebanon Lodge has lost a most

hardworking , genial , and popular Secretary , the brethren , a true-hearted and a devoted friend , the Charities , one of its most enthusiastic supporters , and the Masonic world in general , a brother who was a Mason in the truest sense of the word .

BRO . JOHN CRAVEN TAYLOR . The funeral of the late Bro . John Craven Taylor , of 12 , Morningside , Manningham , took place in Cullingworth churchyard recently . Bro . Taylor was a native of Cullingworth , and was 77 years of age . He never took anactivepart in public affairs , butwas azealousand devoted Mason . He was initiated in August , 1834 , andat ,

the time of his death ranked as one of the oldest and most respected Masons in West Yorkshire . The lodge he entered on initiation was the Three Graces , No . 408 , at Haworth . Bro . Taylor became a Mark Mason during the first year of his membership , a Royal Arch Mason in September , 1835 , and was installed a Knight Templar on December 4 , 18 35 . He was the first

Worshipful Master of the Scientific Lodge , No . 439 . meeting then at Cullingworth , but now at Bingley . Subsequently Bro . Taylor served with distinction in various offices in the Province of West Yorkshire . The funeral was attended by a large number of members of the Order . Bro . Taylor retired from business as a wool merchant about 20 years ago .
