BATTLE . —Abbey Lodge ( No . 1184 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge vvas held on 1 hursday , the 21 st inst ., at the Masonic Hall , when there vvas an unusually large attendance of the brethren and visitors from the various lodges in the province . The annual meeting on the historical and picturesque ground where once raged the fierce and bloody conflict which decided the

fate of our country , is always well attended by visitors , but the accommodation of the charming lodge-room was never more strained than on this occasion , testifying to the increasing popularity of the lodge , and the esteem in which the W . most sumptuous and recherche banquet hadbeen provided by the new host , Mr . C Holt . After the enjoyment of which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere heartily honoured , those of "The W . M ., Bro . Jordan , " and "The Installing Master , Bro . Hughes , " being received with much enthusiasm , testifying to their popularity in the Craft . Allusion was made to their both being young

Masons , and "twins in initiation into the lodge , and to the active and unremitting interest they had taken in the Craft , the example of their success being held out as a stimulant to the exertions of young Masons generally . The proceedings were m uch enlivened by a glee party from St . Leonard ' s , who discoursed sweet music deliriously , and several of the brethren and visitor ! , also exhibited great

ability and talent in adding to the musical enjoyments of the evening . We think vve may venture to congratulate the Abbey Lodge on the unprecedented success of this meeting . Young lodges in small towns frequently become disheartened at the apathy shown by its individual members , the result being frequently a slovenly and imperfect rendering

of our beautiful ritual , but the Abbey Lodge has clearly nothing to reproach itself with in that respect . There is evidently a good supply of young and earnest Masons working up to the chair , and the unflagging interest and example of some of its old Past Masters , notably , Bros . Lamborn and Thorpe , Founders , Wells , Treasurer , and Dean Currie , goes no little way in keeping up the high state of efficiency of this interesting lodge .

satisfactory , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet . Apologies were received from Bros . W . Taylor , P . M . j D . P . Cama , P . G . T . ; and others . BRIGHTON . —St . Cecilia Lodge ( No . 16 3 6 ) . — The regular monthly meeting of this prosperous lodge vvas held in the Royal Pavilion Masonic Rooms , on Tuesday , the 26 th inst ., and notwithstanding the sudden change of weather from bitterly cold north-easterly winds and chilly nights to almost Red Sea heat , was fully attended by the members and their friends . Present : Bros . Charles J .

Albert Gregory , E . Mitchell , C . W . Collins , W . J . Huckell , W . N . Roe , P . P . G . Org . ; T . J . Cully , J . E . Stafford , A . C Sharp , and R . Thornton . Visitors : Bros . Rev . C Kirkby , 375 ; C . W . Hollands , P . M . 1797 ; Capt . A . Nicols , P . M . 130 S , 782 , 1974 , P . Dist . G . Supt . of Wks . Punjab ; H . G . Geere , E . Histead , P . M . 732 , - S . Peters , P . M . 1821 , P . P . G . Purst . j and C S . Cooke 1821 .

The Iodge was opened by the W . M ., assisted by his Wardens , and the minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed the Secretary , at the direction of the W . M ., read the letters and communications appertaining to the lodge . These were discussed and satisfactorily disposed of . The agenda paper vvas then entered upon , which being rather a heavy one necessitated expedition . The

ceremony of initiation was impressively performed by the W . M ., and the Charge delivered by the I . P . M ., Bro . W . Balchin , whose perfect knowledge of his work , together with a cultivated , harmonious voice , invariably charms all those who hear him . The draft by-laws of the proposed Lodge of Instruction now forming by the members of the St . Cecilia Lodge for mutual improvement , were read and

approved . The lodge was opened , and the W . M . vacated thechairinfavourof Bro . W . Balchin , who again riveted the attention of all the Craftsmen by his charming rendering of the ritual , in passing Bros . Wood and Gregory . Such work must certainly make a long and lasting impression upon the minds of the brethren -on whom he conferred the Degree . The W . Master resumed the chair , and several

propositions were handed in to the Secretary , adding considerably to the weight ot work for next month ' s meeting . The lodge vvas then closed , and the brethren retired to the adjoining salon , and rejoiced over a very elegant light summer evening ' s supper . The exquisite fruit and cool wines being most acceptable . On the removal of the cloth the usual loyal and Masonic

toasts vvere duly honoured . " The Health of the Visitors " vvas the only other toast , and that having been briefly responded to , the evening vvas devoted to harmony . Few lodges without the aid of professional talent can afford a more charming programme of music than the St . Cecilia Lodge . However heavy may be the work inside the lodge doors , the evening is sure to bring with it intellectual recreation .

It would be invidious to speak individually of the musical talent displayed by Bros . Collins , Cully , Balchin , Geere , Hckell , and others j but a chord of well-bestowed praise may be said of Bro . W . N . Roe , P . P . G . Organist , for his careful accompaniments on the piano . The Worshipful Master addressed the brethren very cordially , telling the visitors that they would always find a

welcome in that lodge , and remarked that , even if Bro . F . W . Hollands had " lost the coin , " there was plenty in store to render hospitality to "all brothers and fellows" who vvould honour their monthly meetings with their company . He also said that he should be very pleased if Bro . Capt . Nicols would lulfil his promise to give an historical sketch

of the "life and virtues of their patron saint—St . Cecilia " at a future meeting . Undoubtedly , this lodge has become exceedingly popular in Sussex through the kind and unostentatious manner in which they extend their hospitality , and do their work strictly in accordance with the noble traditions of the Craft ,

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES .-Brownrigg Lodge ( No . 163 S ) . —Wednesday , the 20 th instant , vvas another busy day for the officers of this Iodge , as may be imagined from the fact that since the last regular meeting in September , two emergency meetings have been held , and ten new members initiated . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . Geo . Moorman , assisted by Bros . J . Drewett , I . P . M . j W . Drewett , W . M . 889 , S . W . ; Humphrey ,

J . W . ; and T . Montagu , S . D . In the absence of the J . D . and I . G . their duties were performed by Bros . Laurence , P . M . ; Lockett , and Pennington . The minutes being dispoeed of , the W . M . proceeded with the agenda . By request of the W . M . of the Dobie Lodge , Bro . W . Walker was presented as a candidate to be raised to the Sublime Degree , and as a compliment to the sister lodge , W . B . J .

Drewett , who is b . W . of that lodge , was invited by Bro . Moorman to occupy the chair of K . S . for the purpose of raising the visiting brother . Bros . Mills , Bural ! , and Townsend , vvere also raised , and Bros . Mabey , Martin , Bagley , and Creak , passed to the F . C . Degree . With the one exception mentioned above , the whole of the work was performed by the W . M . in an impressive and able manner .

Two candidates were accepted , but neither was in attendance . At this meeting the case of a brother in need vvas brought to the notice of the brethren , and £ 15 was voted to him to relieve pressing necessities . The brethren afterwards partook of refreshment , and Bro . W . W . Morgan , P . M . 211 , who was a visitor , took opportunity to say some words in defence of the Boys ' School Committee .

To show that the Brownrigg Lodge does not forget Charity , it needs but to be stated that at the recent Girls ' School Festival two Stewards went up , with aggregate lists of £ 45 odd . In addition to the grant of £ 15 made , Bro . Youldon , Almoner , also paid the whole of the expenses connected with the election to the School of a son of the late Secretary to the Iodge out of the proceeds of the Charity box .

SURBITON—St . Margaret ' s Lodge ( No . 1872 ) . —On the 2 ist inst ., this lodge held its last meeting before the summer recess , and also prior to what is known as the " summer banquet . " At the set time Bro . Reginald Piper , W . M ., opened lodge with the following officers : Bros . C . Hogg , S . W . j J . H . Crofts , J . W . ; Pearse , I . P . M ., Treas . ; P . Sebastian Hart , P . M ., Sec ; Chester , P . M .

1 S 0 , as S . D . j S . M . Cooke , J . D . ; J . Hodgkin , I . G . j and Budden , Tyler . The other members present included Bros . Gibbes , P . M . ; Stillwell , P . M . ; Gardiner , Stattin , S . H . Hodglun , and Charlton . Visitors : Bros . F . West , P . G . D ., Deputy Prov . G . M . ; W . Drewett , W . M . 889 ; G . Moorman , W . M . 1638 ; H . G . Vickers , W . M . 1632 ; Wilson , W . M . 2146 ; F . P . Hill , S . W . 2146 ; W . B . Clarke , A . J . Crofts , J . Gibband others .

, After the usual preliminary business had been transacted Bro . Gardiner was passed to the Second Degree by the W . M . The charge was given by the S . W ., and the J . W . explained the working tools ' , Bro . Hogg giving the lecture upon the tracing board in an eloquent and correct manner . Bro . Hart drew attention to a handsome Charity-box presented to the lodge by the W . M ., and , on his proposition , seconded by the S . W ., the donor vvas thanked for his gift

fate of our country , is always well attended by visitors , but the accommodation of the charming lodge-room was never more strained than on this occasion , testifying to the increasing popularity of the lodge , and the esteem in which the W . M . elect is held in the Craft . The brethren present were Bros . Robert Hughes , W . M . j J . B . Foord , S . W . j VV . T . JordanJ . W . W . M . elect j H . G . F .

most sumptuous and recherche banquet hadbeen provided by the new host , Mr .

BRIGHTON .

Youldon , Almoner , also paid the whole of the expenses connected with the election to the School of a son of the late Secretary to the Iodge out of the proceeds of the Charity box .

, After the usual preliminary business had been transacted Bro .
