The box is of hard and hig hly polished wood ( in black ) , with white mountings , and bears on it a representation of the floral emblem of the lodge—a marguerite . Later in the evening the box was passed round , and received its "baptism of fire" in the form of a volley of coins , which the Treasurer dexterously extracted from its trunk , and valued at £ 2 3 s . 6 d . Sadler sent up one of his far-famed banquets , more need not be said upon the point . Whether out of compliment to the name of the worthy W . The usual toasts were given , but no long speeches were indulged in .

In responding for " The D . P . G . M . of the Province , ' Bro . West said he was sure that all regretted to hear of the continued indisposition of Bro . General Brownrigg , whom they hoped vvould soon be restored to health again . Speaking of the St . Margaret ' s Lodge , Bro . West said that the lodges in Surrey were noted for their good working , and he had proof that that lodge was able to hold its own in that respect . He congratulated the W . M . upon his successful

and pleasant term of office so far , and trusted the present happy state of affairs might continue . The hospitality of the lodge to neighbouring lodges vvas fully acknowledged by their representatives ; but it must not be omitted to be said that the I . P . M . gave " The Health of the W . M . " with the utmost cordiality , and his call for St . Margaret ' s fire was well responded to . Just before 11 o ' clock the party broke up , alljhoping to meet again in October next .

The lodge was opened by the W . M . and his officers in the presence of a numerous muster of the members and a goodly array of visitors of note in the county of Sussex . The minutes of the last regular meeting having been read and confirmed , and the correspondence disposed of , a ballot was taken for Bro . Charles F . Goode , M . D ., as a joining member , also for Messrs . II . Booth and C E . Gravely as

candidates for initiation , which proved to be unanimous in in favour of each . The W . M . then proceeded with the raising of Bro . E . L . Voysey , which ceremony , with the assistance of the principal officers , he performed with all the care and precision of ritual which invariably marks his work as that of an earnest and facile speaker , and must have made a profound impression on the mind of the

candidate . The W . M . next initiated Mr . Henry Booth into the mysteries of Ancient Freemasonry and then vacated the chair in favour ot the I . P . M ., who is also well known as a master of the art , and he initiated the second candidate . The charge in this Degree ( as well as that in the Third ) was ably and pleasingly delivered by Bro . Stride , P . M . of many county lodges . The W . M . resumed

the chair , and addressing the lodge said , that out of a hearty feeling of personal regard for Bro . A . Du Pont , and in acknowledgment of his many services as Director of Ceremonies since the formation of the lodge , the brethren had resolved to present him with a testimonial engrossed on vellum on that his Silver Wedding Day . The necessary funds were liberally subscribed and with the balance a

suitable souvenir had been purchased and sent to Mrs . Du Pont . The announcement was received with applause and the presentation formerly made by the W . M ., in the name of the lodge . Bro . Du Pont returned thanks in suitable terms on behalf of his wife and himself for those marks of the brethren's esteem and friendship . At that period of the evening Bro . V . F . B . Stanford , founder and

first Master of the lodge , begged leave to retire , he having just heard by telegram of the sudden death of a relative . This concluded the business of the evening , and thelodge being closed , the W . M . and his Wardens " put by their jewels" and , with the members and visitors , adjourned to the dining hall , where an excellent banquet was served . On the removal of the cloth , the W . M . propounded the

rule that , without undue haste or hurrying through the toast list , all speeches must that evening be short and to the point , thereby aff jrding more time for music and social conversation—an excellent rule , which was strictly obeyed , and the advantages of it proved in the keen wit and humour , unadulterated with verbosity , which characterise most replies . Of course , we can never hope to be entirely free from those post-prandial bores who , being young fledgings

in the mysteries of the Craft , assume the position of mentors to their seniors , and , by the aid of a few hap-hazard paragraphs of the ritual , dilate upon the moral advantages of Freemasonry , and eagerly grasp the opportunity of sketching out their own future career of glory , making us wonder how vve have managed to exist so long neglectful of the precious gem before us . After a pleasant and musical evening the brethren separated to their respective homes .
