He might perhaps be pardoned if he said one word more , and he would carefull y guard what he was about to say . They would all accord to him the somewhat personal reference to his own Province when lie said that no one ivcognised more clearly than he did how the Masonic Institutions had been benefited , not by the hel p of particular provinces only , but by the whole Masonic Fraternity , not only of Great Britain , but throughout the world , lint that brotherly feeling upon which Masons prided themselves—aye , and

in which he was proud lo say Masons tried lo carry out in their daily lifethat that brotherly feeling bad in time past so operated that the Charities connected with the- Craft had been blessed with great and valued help . Some people thought that the Charity connected with the old people appealed more directly , and perhaps more keenl y to the sentiment and the heart of Masons generally . It mi g ht be said also that the Schools the Institution which provided for Ihe girls also attracted in its keenest sense the affection , and the work of Masons generally . He admitted that

he felt some hesitation when he was asked to tike the responsible position of presiding at that Festival , and for more than one reason—he knew the feeling that existed ; he knew the fact that the Boys' Festival was the last of the year ; lie knew , if he might use the term , that sentimental affections had been to a certain extent drawn upon by the two earlier Festivals of the ) ear , and he felt also llie additional difficulty that he had in following otic of the most popul ir—and deservedly the most popular—Masons in England . These reasons made him hesitate . There was another reason which

lie need not dilate upon , because it was purely personal , one that he felt it was too earl y after his accepting so prominent a p- > sition in the Craft to take the presidency of sucha Festival . But he fell that he should be wanting in his'duty il he did nol say he was personally much indebted to those gentlemen and ladies who had tome forward and g iven such valuable assistance on that occasion . He knew not what the result of the Festival mi g ht be . The company had just as much information on that as he had , but whatever the

icsult mi g ht be , he could never forget the extreme kindness which had been exhibited b y those who were then present , possibly at great inconvenience , aiid also b y the whole Fraternity throughout Great Britain . Therefore , they would excuse him when he said might be cUim their sympathy—that it did stem a singular coincidence—he would venture to say a most fitting coincidence — that in connection with that Festival , over which he was presiding the examinations which had just taken p lace a \ Vi st

Yorkshire boy stood out at the head of the list —{ applauseI—another West Yorkshire boy had taken a very valuable prize , although he could nol ciaim it on lh-s occasion , yet he was sure they would appreciate his difficulty . I le could not claim that the prize for good conduct had been won by a Yorkshire boy , yet the fact remained that the prize lor the most popular boy in the School had been won by a West Yorkshire boy —( applause)—the prize being awarded on ihe most democratic of princi ples by popular election

amorg the boys . The most popular boy in the School was not 11 -cessaril y the boy who got the hi g hest prize . B -ar this in mind that however much it was their duty to help the Old Peop ' e ( and t was a duty which they must recognise , though they might be drawn to the girls in their weakness ) , at the same time thev must not forget that they h ; d a duty lo the Institution for Boys , because it was upon the boys rested

ll e duty of becoming future citizens , on whom would devolve the great burdens of empire and also of Masonic benevolence . Therefore , on their behalf and in tint spirit he would ask the brethren to drink success to the Boys' Institution and to that festival , and whatever the result mi ght be , he trusted it would prove at all events to have been one of trrse festivals which would forward in a material and subttantial way the greal work of Charily , which he was sure deserved their help .

Bro . RICHARD F . M-:. P . G . Treas ., Treasurer of the Institution , replied , and , after passing a high eulogium on the eloquent and practical speech of ihe Chairman , passed to a revLw of the work which had been done at the School , and which made , it worth y of the support of the brethren . On behalf of the Board of Management , he acknowledged the graceful compliment the Chairman I 1-1 H bestowed , and he assured ihem that that Board was

Ihe morale and tone of the School were excellent , wh li .-Ii . wcd there was an influence for good in the Sc ' iool , and the Board wished to cultivate that and make il better .
