THE GRAND LODGE OF QUEBEC .

The following circular has been issued from the above » ige : — " Office of the Grand Secretary , " Montreal , P . Q ., June 24 th , 1 SS 1 . "To the R . W . the Grand Secretary of the M . W . the Grand Lodge , A . F . and A . M ., of " FRATERNAL SALUTATIONS . "

" R . W . Sir and Dear Brother , — " 1 have the pleasure , b y command of the Grand Master of the Graiid Lodge of Quebec , A . F . and A . M ., to eommUnicate through you , to the M . W . the G . M ., and to the other oflicers arid members of your Grand Lodge , and through them , to all the lodges of obedience to your said Grand Lodge , that the three lodges late Scottish registry

in the citv and district of Montreal , namely , the Elgin , late No . 3 * 48 , S . R ., the Argyle , late No . 625 , S . R . and the King Solomon , late No . 622 , S . R ., have happily become of obedience to , and have been duly enrolled on the registry of the Grand Lodge of Quebec , under warrants regularly granted thereto by our said Grand Lodge of Quebec ; that the M . W . the Grand Lodge of Scotland has recalled and

cancelled the patent of the Dstnct Grand Master of Montreal , S . R . ; and that the said Grand Lodge of Scotland has , by the request of the Grand Lodge of Quebec , and of the three aforesaid lodges , returned the three original warrants duly endorsed by the Grand Lodge of Quebec , by the said lodges , and by the Grand Lodge of Scotland , in order that the said warrants may be preserved as

The Grand Lodge Of New South Wales.

THE GRAND LODGE OF NEW SOUTH WALES .

The " acting editor" of the ( Sydney , New South Wales ) Freemason , sends us a long communication , in reply to an editorial that appeared in the London Freemason , and was transferred to our columns , concerning the so-called Grand Lodge of New South Wales . This communication

concludes , singularly , as follows : In thc interest of our ancient and holy Order , and in the interest of those brethren who dared to demand that freedom of thought , deed and act , to which they , as Freemasons , were entitled , I claim a speed y recognition from every Grand Lodge throughout the United States of America , and the whole of the globe , for thc Grand Lodge of New South

Wales . Not as a favour do I ask this , but as a recognition of the inherent right of lodges which exist in a neutral territory of erecting an independent Grand Lodge in such territory . And I shall be impelled to consider any antagonism which maybe exhibited in any of the Grand Lodges in America , or in any Masonic journal , as a . positive suppott and approbation of tyranny in its worst form , viz .: that tyranny which prohibits freedom of

thought , speech , and act . It strikes us that our brother is slightly peremptory in his demands upon the Grand Lodges and Masonic journals of America . Even independent jurisdictions have no right to demand any concession from another independent jurisdiction—much less has a so-called Grand Lodge , struggling for independent existence . Our brother will do well to bc less autocratic , and more modest , and he thereby may more surely advance the cause he has at heart . —Philadelphia Keystone .

Music In Masonry.

MUSIC IN MASONRY .

The introduction of a musical ceremony in connection with the conferring of Masonic Degrees , has occasioned considerable comment in certain quarters—particularly among English brethren . A lodge in Lancashire , England , recentl y made use ot an extended musical service while conferring the First and Second Degrees , and this musical

part of the ceremony was condemned by a prominent visitor , Bro . H . S . Alpass , the Provincial Grand Secretary , as being an unwarrantable innovation . Thc ceremony consisted of chants and the singing of hymns by a strong body of voices in the gallery , together with the use of instrumental music . The visiting officer declared in open lodge that he would not permit such a deviation from the ancient

landmarks of the Craft . Considerable feeling was manifested , and the question as to the propriety of thc " new departure" was referred to the Board of General Purposes of the Grand Lodge for a decision . The following was the answer returned : " Freemasons' Hall , London , W . C , 9 th May , 1 SS 1 . — Dear Sir and Brother : In reply to yours ol tbe Gth inst ., on the subject of vocal music in lodges , I may inform you

that the question has been more than once before the Board of General Purposes . The following is the text of the last letter 1 wrote by their direction : 'The singing of hymns forms no part of the ritual of the Three Degrees of Masonry , and the Board would , if appealed to , object to the practice . At the same time no objection would be made to an instrumental musical accompaniment . ' Yours

fraternally , SHADWEI . I . H . CLERKE , G . S . Bro . H . S . Alpass , P . G . Sec , \ V . Lancashire . " VVe can see no reason for excluding vocal music onjthe occasion of a Masonic service . It adds to the effectiveness of the ceremony in the conferring of Degrees to have both

instrumental and vocal music , and we know of nothing in the ritual or organic law of Masonry that conflicts with tne employment of so valuable an aid . It only needs that good judgment bo exercised in regard to the selections , and the way and manner in which they are introduced into the ceremony . —Freemasons' Repository .
