Ship Inn , where the annual banquet was held . The spread awaiting ihem was of the choicest description , embracing all the delicacies of the season . After full justice had been done to the viands , a toast list , comprising the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , was gone through . Songs were sung at intervals by Bros . J . Atkinson , G . Hill , J . Mills , W . Bradley , R . T . Taylor , J . S . Garner , M .

Wilson , and B . A . Mitchell . During the evening a very handsome P . M . ' s jewel was prestnted to Bro . T . Bowness , I . P . M ., as a mark of esteem and in recognition of his services in connection with the lodge during the past year . A splendid Steward ' s jewel was also presented to Bro . R . G . W . Bradley by the

brethren of the lodge , as a mark of esteem , and as a farewell token previous to his leaving for Australia . During the proceedings hearty congratulations and wishes for a prosperous year of office were received by telegram from Bro . VV . Atkinson , P . M . 1390 , P . G . O ., who is at present in London . A very enjoyable evening was then brought to a close .

PLUMSTEAD . —United Military Lodge ( No . 153 6 ) . —The end of Bro . W . Maule ' s year of office as VV . M . in the above lodge was marked by one of the finest specimens of installation work that we have had the pleasure of witnessing for many years ; his career , however , has been one of so much good Masonic work , and such careful and conscientious rendering of the ritual , that had he not installed his successor in the grand manner he did , there would have been just as much regret expressed as there

was unstinted admiration offered . The lodge having been opened by Bro . Maule , and the minutes of the previous meeting confirmed , two brethren were passed and one raised to the Sublime Degree . Bro . R . Gooding , S . VV . and VV . M . elect , was presented to Bro . Maule to receive at his hands the benefit of installation , and in due course , and in ancient form , he was installed and saluted . He appointed and invested his officers as follows : W . Maule , I . P . M . ; Quartermaster T . F . Cooper ,

S . W . ( by proxy ); A . Murdock , J . VV . ; J . W . Gee , Treas . ; A . Ware , Sec ; VV . Seager , S . D . ; F . J . Couper , J . D . ; VV . Musquin , I . G . j H . L . Muffin . " , D . C ; T . Spackman , A . D . C ; VV . J . Wheeler and VV . Sayc-Edwards , Stwds . Bro . Maule then delivered the usual addresses and finished a perfect ceremony . He was then awarded a cordial vote of thanks , to be inscribed on the minutes , and was presented with a Past Master's jewel of

the value of ten guineas , and returned thanks . Bro . Capt . W . Weston , P . M ., P . P . G . S-. vd . Br . Kent , was re-elected for the eleventh time to represent the lodge at the Provincial Charity Committee , and four brethren were elected as Auditors for the coming year . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren sat down lo a nicely served cold collation , consisting of the delicacies of the season , which was quite a refresher this Abyssinian weather .

The usual lojal and Grand Lodge toasts having been drunk , that of "The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , Earl Amherst , " was received and drunk with all the honours it deserved . In response to that of " The D . P . G . M ., Bro . J . S . Eastes , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " Bro . G . Kenneday , P . M ., P . G . Stwd . Kent , said

had his lordship or Bro . Eastes been present they must have been gratified at the enthusiastic reception the toast had met with at the hands of the brethren . There could be no manner of doubt that it was a great honour to be chosen to office , even the humblest , under such a Grand Master ; nd in such a province , but he attiibuted it more as an honour to the lodge than to himself . If at Ihe end

of his ( . resent office he was honoured with an established position among the Prov . Grand Officers , he felt that he should ever maintain , by every means in his power , the reputation and credit of the United Military Lodge , which was nearly , if not quite , the strongest in the province . He spoke highly of the Grand Officers , especially those of the Wge , and felt proud to follow in their footsteps .

The Immediate Past Master then proposed the toast of "The VV . M ., " and said Bro . Gooding would he strongly supported by every member of the lodge . He was a most experienced Mason and a credit to the lodge , and in their name he wished him health and long life . Bro . Gooding said it was in most cases only once in one's life that one had to respond as VV . M . of a lodge ; for

himself , he felt rather young in his position , but hoped as time went on he should be able to say more about himself than at present . He had been a member of the lodge for the last eight years , and had during that time endeavoured to render himself useful in every way , and trusted they would

never regret having chosen him as their W . M . It was a singular coincidence that the two senior officers of the lodge , should , by the exigences of the service , be removed 1 ? , ri ''•- ^ was now stationed at Aldershot , and Bro . Cooper , S . W ., at Preston ; but he knew that he had Bro . Maule at his side , and should he be unable to be

Present , that excellent brother had promised him to carry on the work in his absence . Their I . P . M . had been klnd enough to speak about his knowledge of Masonry ; , ' , P & been Preceptor of the lodge of instruction , and left it without fear , knowing that it was safe in the hands of Bro . Maule , whose working was second to none . 'J district . He strongly advised the young members nt the lod ge to attend the lodge of instruction , and concluded b

y hoping that at the end of his year of office they would never regret having installed him Master of the lodge . ihe next toast was that of "The Installing Officer , " ^ d , in response , Bro . Maule sincerely thanked them for ne very gratifying manner in which it had been received , and also for the very great support he had at all times revived at their hands . He had been a member of the lodge or nine years , and had never seen a W . M . bettersupported 'nan he had been . Bra . Capt . G . Spinks , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., said that some of them might remember that when the lodge was consecrated the Grand Chaplain said , - ' they were a fierce and determined body of men , " and they were the same now in their determination to sustain the prestige of the lodge , and to support their P . a success . Brcs . Kenneday , Deeves , Coupland , and Jolly also responded . The other toasts were "The Visitors , " "The Officers , " "The Host , Bro . H . Vallon , " and Tyler ' s toast . Bro . Hancock presided at the piano , and contributions were rendered by Bros . Hancock , Bidgood , Walker , F . G .

Nichols , VV . M . 706 ; J . Sanderson , VV . M . 700 ; and last , but not least , by Bro . Quartermaster Rankin , of the Rifle Brigade , stationed at Woolwich , who " is a fine reciter , and whose provincial , Irish , and Scotch songs and dialogues are most entertaining . been present , so , in his absence , the toast list was considerably curtailed , and music took the place of speeches . The following brethren were appointed to office : Bros . C . J . Axford , I . P . M . ; P . Cheek , S . VV . ; R . M . Surridge , J . W . ; H . Lovegrove , Treas . ; Wm . A . Scurrah , Sec ; Wm . H . George Kenning , was presented to the outgoing Master , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , and afterwards honoured the usual toasts . After the toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " " The Grand Master , " "The Pro Grand Master , and the rest

of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " had been given and honoured , The Worshipful Master in proposing " The Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , Sic , " said they were all greatly indebted in the Province of Middlesex to Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , who had always been an excellent Prov . Grand Master . He knew Sir Francis well , and he hoped that those who did not know him would appreciate the feelings of those who did .

Bro . H . Lovegrove , as one ui the Past Prov . Grand Officers of Middlesex , wishing to say a few words on behalf of the province , explained to the brethren that he had endeavoured to do as much as he could tor the province , which he was happy to see was in so flourishing a condition and now had such a large number of lodges on its toll . What he had done for the province he had tried to do for

the lodges . The Prov . Grand Master was a genial English gentleman and a kind good Mason . The Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . lhiupp , was a clever worker both in the Crait and the Arch , and a capital brother . Bro . Woodward , the Prov . G . Sec , was well up in his duties and most business like . Altogether the Province of Middlesex was most fortunate in having most desirable

brethren for its officers , who always endeavoured to link themselves when rendering assistance in the cause of Masonry . Other Provincial Grand Officers also reponded to the toast , and eulogised the Prov . G . M . and the Deputy Prov . G . M ., and the late Henry Levander , after whom that lodge was named .

Bro . Axford , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . M . " The Worshipful Master , in reply , said he was very pleased to have become the VV . M . of the Henry Levander Lodge . When he joined the lodge he felt that in time to come he should be proud to have endeavoured to form the lodge along with Bros . Lovegrove and Scurrah and other

brethren . He was pleased also to have such distinguished brethren on his left who were higher than he in Masonry . He tru s ted that he should emulate them , and try to follow in their footsteps and produce good work in the Henry Levander Lodge . The Worshipful Master next gave "The Installing Master , " and complimented Bro . Axford on the way in which he had executed his work .

Bro . Axlo / d very briefly replied , and thanked the brethren for ihe handsome P . M . ' s jewel with which they had presented him . Bro . Lovegrove , P . M . and Treasurer , responded to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and said he had not yet been able to open a banking account for the lodge because he had not had sufficient funds . But the lodge had managed to rub along from year to yearand he hoped

, they would be soon able to comply with the requisition of the Grand Secretary and have a banking account . Bro . VV . A . Scurrah , P . M . and Sec , also replied , and said that he and Bro . Lovegrove and other officers had done their best to promote the interests of the Henry Levander , Lodge . He hoped that every one was thoroughly satisfied with what had taken place that day ; and if the brethren

expressed their approval , that was all the reward that was expected . He trusted that in the coming year they would go on in the same way as they had in the past . They did not want to have a grand banquet but merely such substantial refreshment that all biethren could enjoy , and it would not be his or the Treasurer's fault it they were not made comfortable . He felt sure the lodge would become one of the best in the

province . " The Visitors" formed the subject of the next toast , which having been responded to , was followed bv the toast of " The Officers . " The S . W . and others having replied , the Tyler ' s toast was given , and the brethren separatedafter having spent

, a most enjoyable day . A very interesting programme was peiformed by the following artistes : Misses Marianne Fenna and Florence Crolt , Bros . Egbert Roberts , and Selwyn Davies , the whole arrangements being under the direction of Bro . George Jenkins , _____
