CONSECRATION OF THE GOSTLING MURRAY LODGE , No . 1871 .

Lodges arc continually being granted at such a rate that we have now outstripped what many , a few years ago , thought an improbability ; i . e ., number of thc lodges to exceed the number of the year , and in less than five years such has been the increase that over 300 lodges have been

added to the roll . The M . W . G . M . has been pleased to grant . 1 warrant for a new lodge at Hounslow , to meet the requirements of the officers of the Sth Battalion Middlesex Riilcs , which lodge the brethren have been pleased to designate the Gostling Murray Lodge , in recognition of one who is so dear to every one of Jhc officers as their late Colonel . The

Committee , under the guidance of that most indefatigable and distinguished Bro . Lieut . G . W . Dixon , P . M . sog , S 65 , & c , & c , appointed to carry out the arrangements for formation of the lodge did their work in a highly creditable manner , and to this may be attributed the perfect success of the day ' s proceedings . Accordingly , on Saturday last , the new lodge was consecrated under most favourable

auspices , and Middlesex has one more lodge added to its already long list . The M . W . G . M . appointed Bro . H . C . Levander , Prov . G . Sec . Middx ., as the Consecrating Officer . The ceremony took place in the Town Hall , Hounslow , where the brethren assembled sharp to the time , 3 . 30 . The Consecrating Officer , assisted bv Bro . 1 . O . Carter , P . M ., P . S .

The lodge being opened in due form the petition and warrant was then " read , after which the Presiding Officer

delivered an oration on the nature and principles of thc Institution in an impressive manner , as indeed was the whole of the ceremony , the anthems being beautifully rendered by thc brethren , to whom this part of the ceremony seemed no new thing . The consecration being completed , the Inaugurating " Officer installed Bro . Dr . K . S . Willett . P . M . S 6 <; . P . P . LCD . Surrey , as the W . M ., who

then invested as officers Bros . Lieut . G . W . Dixon , P . P . G . D . of Cers . Berks and Bucks , as S . W . ; Major Hcnrj Bullock , as J . W . ; G . E . Thomason , Treas . ; and W . S . Cantrell , S . D . The investiture of the other officers was deferred until next meeting , as several very distinguished brethren are expected to be present on that occasion , who must first be balloted for as joining members , in conformity

with the rules of the Institution . A long list of names as joining members , and gentlemen for initiation being read , it was proposed , and carried unanimously , that the brethren who had assisted in thc ceremony should become honorary members . There being no other business before the lodge , it was closedaccordingto usual custom , and thebrethren adjourned

to the Star and Garter Hotel , at Kew Bridge , where an excellent banquet was provided , under the presidency ol the newly-installed W . M . On the removal of the cloth , thc first toast , "The Queen and Craft , " was duly honoured in that hearty manner thai only a combination of Masonic and military discipline can produce . The "M . W . G . M . " was then duly honoured ,

and the usual toasts proceeded , interspersed with some charming songs from Bros . Tollcy , Hume , Bryett , and others . After the toast of "The Installing Officers , " each of whom returned thanks for thc honour conferred upon them of the rank of honorary members , thc Chaplain , in response , said he congratulated the members on the

satisfactory commencement of this new lodge , and trusted the remarks of thc Consecrating Officers would be studied and carried out to their fullest extent , and that the influence of the lodge would be felt in the surrounding neighbourhood , and by doing the work it was calculated to do , viz ., by lessening the aggregate of human misery , thus bc an ornament to the regiment with which they were associated .

Thc W . M . gave a special toast i . e ., "Col . Gostling Murray , " who duly acknowledged the toast , and in a few words explained to the brethren , that when asked to allow his name to be used in connection with this lodge , he was under tlie impression it would have been far better for them to call it by the name of their battalion , but having left it for them to think over thev had thought well to use his

name . He felt flattered that they should thus wish to perpetuate his memory , and thanked the brethren for thc compliment , and trusted that the future of the lodge would be one of the very happiest associates of the regiment to which they belonged . Bro . J . Mason , P . P . G . S . D . Middx ., the newly-appointed Collector for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Freemasons , to which he responded , and while acknowledging the great work of the other Charities , urged upon the brethren the claims of his particular Institution in such a manner that , if he is only a private in the duties of collector , he has certainly attained the rank of Field

Marshal in begging for the old people at Croydon , and wc f « el sure that his appeals for a great united effort at their forthcoming festival will not bc in vain . The toast of "The Officers " was ably responded to , who each in their turn assured the W . M . it would bc their constant stud y in connection with their various offices , how best to fulfil the duties to his entire satisfaction , and thus

have the gratifying testimony of a good conscience . The Tyler ' s toast , at the request of the W . AL , was given by Bro . C . NOWEI . L , Prov . G . P . DEATH OF BRO . THE REV . JOHN HUYSHE .

Wc gave a brief account last week of thc death of our venerable and esteemed brother , and now reprint the following notice from the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette , I'he Kev . John Huyshe , Rector of Clyst H y don , died on Alonday evening , the iSth inst ., at a ripe old age , having

entered upon his Sist year last month . He had been ailing for some time past , and at the last sank insensibl y to rest , beloved and venerated throughout his small parish , and deeply esteemed throughout the whole county of Devon . He was a graduate of Oxford University , ist class in Mathematics , M . A . 1 S 24 . Ordained deacon in 1 S 2 S , and priest in 1 S 29 , by thc Bishop of Bath and Wells , he served as

curate of Rockbeare from 1 S 2 S to 1 S 31 , ( and in the latter year was preferred to the Rectory of Clyst Hydon , which he has jheld for one year less than half-a-ccnttiry . A Justice of the Peace for the county , a distinguished Freemason , and an energetic clergyman , he lived a useful life , devoted to his duties , generous in his impulses , and ever willing to bc of service to his fellow-men . He was the author of an

excellent " Treatise on Logic , " published whilst he was at Oxford , and which has gone through several editions , the last being in 1 S 72 . During the chief part of his career a Moderate Liberal in politics , Air . Gladstone ' s crusade against the Irish Church in lSGS estranged him from that party , leading him to avow his hearty disapproval of the work of spoliation in an open and forcible manner , and

since then he has identified himself with thc Conservatives , warmly supporting thc views of Sir Stafford Northcote . But he is known best in Devonshire generally as a Freemason . He joined the Craftas early as 1 S 22 , when resident at Oxford , and subsequently served as W . Alaster of St . John ' s Lodge , Exeter , and became a subscribing member of several lodges , amongst them Semper Fidelis Lodge

No . 1254 . In 1 S 35 he was first appointed Provincial Junior Grand Warden , and , after holding that office several years , was made Provincial Senior Grand Warden in 1 S 39 . Eleven years later—in October 1850—he was constituted and appointed Deputy Provincial Grand Alaster for the Province of Devon , by the late Earl Fortescue , K . G ., then Provincial Grand Alaster , and on the noble Karl ' s decease was

reappointed to the office by the Grand Registrar of England , thc Acting Provincial Grand Alaster . 'ihc Most Worshipful Grand Master , the Earl of Zetland , K . T ., promoted Bro . Huyshe to thc office of Grand Chaplain to the Grand Lodge of England in 1 S 62 , and he was rc-appointed in 1 SG 3 . By the Earl of Zetland he was further promoted to the Provincial Grand Alastcrship of Devon in iSGG , and was

installed at Exeter with a memorable ceremony , in Alay of that year , by the V . W . Bro . / Eneas j . Mclntyre , Grand Registrar of England . On that occasion he was presented by the Freemasons of the province with a suit of Alasonic clothing , consisting of a massive chain and jewel , of solid lS-carat gold , and a richly-embroidered apron and gauntlets , together with an elegant drawing-room timepiece , and two

candelabra to match—the whole at a cost of £ 150 . His appointment as P . G . AL was brought about by a strong memorial from the Freemasons of the province in his favour , expressive of their high esteem and confidence in him . He held other distinguished posts in connection with the Order , and was several times a recipient of marks of favour from the Craft , amongst them being a testimonial offered to him as Eminent Commander from the Rousremrmt- Fni-nmr ,.

ment . This consisted of a beautiful mediaeval toast-cup of hammered silver , holding about two quarts , which had belonged to the late Grand Master the Duke of Sussex , and bore H . R . H . ' s coronet and cypher . He was made Provincial Grand Commander of Devon in 1 84 S , and of Cornwall from 1 S 63 till 1 SG 7 , in which year he was preferred to the post of Deputy Grand Master of Knights Templars in England . An ardent supporter of the Alasonic charities ,

he filled offices in connection with the chief of them . In short , to quote a Alasonic publication , the history of the late Bro . Huyshe "is the history of all that has been good and progressive in Alasonry for the past half-century . Early impressed with the high importance of the Order , he filled every office with dignity and honour . His aim was to be pre-eminent in 'The skylle of becomynge gude and parfyyhte , ' and he succeeded . " His rule of the province was

mild and gentle , as well as efficient , and under his sway Masonry flourished . Growing infirmities compelled him to resign his several appointments last year ; and , as our readers will remember , Viscount Ebrington was chosen P . G . AL in his stead . At the noble Viscount ' s instalment , Bro . Huysh * placed on his shoulders , and presented to thc province , the massive gold chain—the finest in Englandwhich had been presented to him as a special gift on his

own'installation . Though ladies are kept outside the Order , his good wife—a daughter of the late Dr . Greaves , and an amiable and talented lady—always took the liveliest interest in his Masonic duties , as far as the rules of the Craft permitted , and helped him in his good work . Bro . Huyshe has died full of years and honour , and leaves behind him the reputation of a true Alason , an earnest friend , a loyal citizen , and a faithful parish priest .

On Tuesday afternoon , the 2 GH 1 inst ., thc mortal remains of thc Rev . John Huyshe , late Rector of Clyst Hydon , and Past Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire Freemasons , were consigned to thc grave in the parish churchyard , in thc presence of a large number of persons . In accordance with the deceased ' s expressed wishes the funeral was of a purely private nature , but , notwithstanding this , many friends and Masonic brethren attended as a last mark of

respect to one whom they had known so well and valued so highly . Bro . Huyshe has endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact during a long life of usefulness , and his loss will not only bc felt by his immediate relatives and a large circle of acquaintances , but particularly by the poor of his parish , who have , b y his death , been deprived of a sympathetic benefactor . ' 1 he esteem in which he was held by his late parishioners was amply testified on

Tuesday last , for they all attended the funeral in deep mourning , and there was scarcely a dry eye amongst them . Bro . Huyshe died on Monday evening , the iSth inst ., at Clyst Hydon Rectory , and his remains were carried thence to the churchyard on a bier by tenants and employes . Unfortunately thc weather was most unpropitious , rain falling during the whole of the day . The body was followed to the church , where the first portion of the

Burial Service took place , by thc deceased ' s widow ( Mrs . Huyshe ) , General Huyshe , C . B . ( only surviving brother of thc deceased ) , and his wife , from Jersey ; Major Huyshe , the Rev . C . Walkey , the household servants , and those employed on the estate . The church was crowded , and as the cortege entered the sacred edifice the funeral march in Scifiio was played on the organ by Air . Symes , master of the National School . 'I'he service in the church

was conducted by the Rev . John B . Shattock , B . A ., Curate at Clysthydon , and at the grave by thc Rev . Francis John Huyshe , M . A ., nephew of the deceased and senior Curate of Wilton . Viscount Ebrington , Provincial Grand Alaster of Devonshire , was unable to present through being in Ireland , but he was represented by the Deputy Provincial Grand Mastcr ( Bro . W . C Rogers ) and Bro . ColonclTanncr Davy , Provincial Grand Alaster of Alark Alasons . Among

the other friends and prominent members of the Craft to which the deceased gentleman belonged present were Bros . E . Drewe , Esq . ( Uatcliffc ) , Colonel Drewe , Alajor-General Bartlett , Rev . The deceased was buried in a brick grave by the side of his ancestors , in a large family enclosure . The coffins were made according to thc wishes of the deceased by the steward , Air . Hole , out of elm grown on thc estate . The metal shield breastplate bore the following inscription— "John Huyshe , died iSth October , 1 SS 0 ,

aged So years . On t . ie black pall were placed a pair of white gloves and several beautiful wreaths , two of Alasonic design having been sent respectively by the brethren of St . John the Baptist Lodge , Exeter , No . 39 , thc premier lodge of the province , of which thc deceased was a member and a Past Alaster , and Dr . Woodman , of the Exeter Nurseries . The whole of the funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs . Green and Son , of High-street , Exeter .

Air . Huyshe has ministered in Clyst Hydon for forty-nine years . Ihc living has been recently purchased by Mr . Drake , a solicitor of Dorset , for his son , a young man who , only a fortnight ago , started on a voyage to Australia for the benefit of his health . Thc living has been held by thc Huyshe family since 1703 , and the deceased , on coming to the parish , added thc north aisle , in the east window of which the arms of the family , from 1331 , arc depicted .

A muffled peal was rung on the bells of the parish church in the afternoon . We understand that Alasonic mourning will be ordcrctl throughout the province for thc whole of the Craft Lodges , Royal Arch Chapters , and Alark Alasons for three months . Letters are being received from the most prominent brethren throughout the kingdom , and especially from thc members of Grand Lodge , regretting the death of Air . Huyshe and the loss he will be to the Craft generally .
