thc footsteps of his predecessor , and if his working should be less brilliant than they had been accustomed to during the past twelve months , this at least he could promise them , no effort should bc wanting on his part ; and relying on the assistance and support of the brethren he trusted the lodge would never have cause to be ashamed of him . He should hope that at thc end of his year of office the credit of thc lodge would stand as

high as it had always stood ; that the dignity of the Alaster's chair in thc Eccleston Lodge would be passed undiminished to his successor ; and that thc brethren would be the same united body that they were that day . Yet he should need the assistance of his officers , with the support of the brethren , to which he had already referred ; with that , which he felt sure of , the progress of thc lodge was secure . The W . AL then proposed "The Health of the Immediate Past Alaster and his Predecessors . " He said

that in giving them this toast he had also something else to do—he had to present , in their name , to his brother who bad just vacated the chair he had now the honour of occupying , the Past Alaster's jewel which he held in his hand , and to ask its acceptance as an unanimous expression on the [ part of the lodge of its sense of the ability , faithfulnncc nn / 1 ncci / liiifir » itif ] - » iir 1 ^ i _ r > lt if-c- nlrinv li i rl l-i / i _ rni nntiin-ni-l

by his brother , Immediate Past Master Vincent . In presenting the jewel and addressing Bro . Vincent , Past Alaster , the Worshipful Master said : Long may you live to wear this jewel , and whenever you gaze upon it , may it remind you of the many friends you have in Eccleston Lodge , and of thc happy hours we have spent together . He was quite sure that he had richly deserved this mark of

honour , for thc duties of his year of office had been discharged with such cordiality , urbanity , and zeal as to win the regard and esteem of every member of the lodge . And what need he say of the other Past Alasters ? Nothing I He gave the toast , which was received with enthusiasm . Immediate Past Alaster Vincent responded in suitable terms to the toast of his health , and expressed his

thanks to the brethren for the jewel with which they had presented him , and his gratification that he had been able so to perform the duties of his office as to give satisfaction to the lodge . Past Alaster AIcLeod also responded , and announced that as a further mark of their appreciation of the efforts of their Immediate Past Alaster , and as a tribute of respect to their W . AL , he had received promises of gifts

which would amount to three-fourths of the debt remaining on the lodge , the satisfaction of which would leave the hands of their VV . AI . still more free than they would otherwise be . "Thc Health of the Initiate " was given , and suitably responded to by Bro . W . Bignold . Thc toast of "The Visitors" was next proposed in felicitous terms by thc VV . AI . They had a large number of friends visiting them

that evening—about five and twenty—amongst whom were Past Masters J . Wyer , Gunner , R . Stamp , andT . Simpson , and Bros . Mursell , Pearce , J . Cantle , Sexton , Folson , Griffin , Bassington and others . He connected with thc toast the names of Past Alasters Wyer , J . Cantle , and Simpson . Bro . P . AI . J . Wyer in responding thanked the VV . AI . and the brethren for thc manner in which the toast had been

respectively proposed and received . He considered it an honour to be an invited guest of thc Worshipful Alaster at their lodge that evening , and he was exceedingly pleased to have had an opportunity of witnessinglhe very able work of P . AL Vincent . He had long known their VV . AI ., but he was no stranger to them either , and lie need not , therefore , occupy their time by dilating un his meiils ; ; , l ill he would

say that he felt sure that his year of office woultl be one entirely satisfactory to the lotlge , and creditable lo himself . He thanked them on behalf of himself and fellow visitors for the manner in which they had been entertained . Bros . J . Cantle and Simpson also responded , and the evening ' s entertainment was further added to by songs from several musical brethren .

the W . M . and brethren for the very hearty anil cordial reception accorded the visitors that evening . With regard tn the work that he hatl seen performed in thc lodge , he had been simply charmed with the perfect manner in which Bro . thc VV . M . proposed in glowing terms "The Health of their I . P . AI ., Bro . Bush . " He was sure this toast would be heartily received , as it was to Bro . Bush that they owed entirely the success of the lodge . He at all times gave the members his best advice , which coming from so good and skilled a Mason was well worthy the attention of the

members , more particularly the younger ones .
