Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

asked Sir John Monckton to perform the ceremony of installation on the 3 rd November . They all knew from the way Bro . Wright had given the lectures and charges during his year of office that he was quite competent to install him ; nevertheless he had spontaneously requested Sir John on account of his having installed every Master of the lodge ,

to do so again , and he ( Bro . Perkins ) felt it was a greater honour to be installed by a brother holding such high office in the Craft . lifcThe Worshipful Master replied in a few words to the toast of his health . Most of the brethren then left to attend the Lady Mayoress ' s Ball at the Mansion House .

STRAND LODGE ( No . 1987 ) . —The installation meeting was held on the 14 th inst ., at the Criterion , Piccadilly , under the presidency of Bro . J . R . Stacey , P . M ., who , in the unavoidable absence ot the candidates for initiation , at once proceeded to install Bro . VV . Harris , P . M . and W . M . elect , as Master of the lodge . This ceremony being concluded , the collars of the lodge were conferred on the following brethren : Bros . J . R . Stacey , I . P . M . ; J .

Douglass , P . M ., S . W . ; W . T . Madge , J . W . ; J . Willing , P . M ., Treas . ; W . M . Stiles , P . M ., Sec ; A . Leon , S . D . ; E . N . Dale , J . D . ; J . H . Batty , I . G . ; H . S . Foster , D . of C . ; F . Jackson , A . D . of C . j J . N . Hare and C . J . Taylor , Stwds . ; R . Mackway , Org . ; C . H . Cutbush , Asst . Sec . ; and R . Whiting , Tyler . Before closing the business of the day , the new W . M ., in name of the lodge , presented to Bro . R . Stacey a P . M . 's

jewel , manufactured according to the Strand Lodge pattern , and Bro . Stacey , in thanking the W . M . and the brethren for their generous gift , would not deny that he appreciated the jewel for its own value , and for the testimony it bore to the esteem of the brethren ; but , at the same time , he assured them that his love of Freemasonry went beyond that mere bauble , and that under the care and guidance of the esteemed W . M . it would be his pleasure to assist in

conducting its future progress . The brethren then assisted the W . M . to close the lodge , and adjourned to the banqueting room . After the repast had been disposed of , and grace sung , the customary toasts were submitted for the acceptance of the brethren , " The Queen and the Craft " having been honoured , That of "The Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand

Master , andthe restof the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was associated with the name of Bro . Col . Harding , to whom a hearty welcome was accorded . Col . Harding , in reply , said he could not be other than sensible of the very high honour just paid to the Grand Officers of England by the W . M ., in proposing and by thebrethrenin welcoming the toast with amiable enthusiasm . With the long programme before the brethren it would not

be right to occupy much of their time , but he need hardly say the Grand Officers were all animated by a sincere desire to serve their brethren , and forward the cause ot the Institutions to which they all so heartily subscribed . He could not resume his seat without thanking the W . M . very cordially for the remarks which he had applied to him in a personal sense , and Bro . Mackway for the very considerable pleasure he had afforded him by being his host .

Bro . Stacey , I . P . M ., in proposing * ' The W . M ., " said that having had the honour and pleasure of installing the W . M ., he was thoroughly convinced that he would never discredit the chair . He had shown that evening what he intended to do , that he was equal to the work , and that he intended the brethren should be happy . He was an excellent worker , and they would not find him wanting—in one sentence , in fact , they would find Bro . Harris one of the

best Masters they had had . The Worshipful Master having acknowledged the toast , next proposed "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , " wishing him health and strength to assist the Strand Lodge in the future . There was no more worthy brother in the lodge than Bro . btacey , who was actuated by the kindliest feelings to every member , and who was so devoted to Masonry that he would go any distance , or rise at any

time , to assist any brother with his work . Bro . Stacey , I . P . M ., said the Strand Lodge was started under very excellent auspices indeed , and their Master for the first two years was Bro . Willing . In those early days they had an extraordinary amount of work to do , and it was done faithfully and well . He sincerely thought they had got a similar man in the present W . M . In the office lie ( Bro . Stacey ) had filled in the lodge he had used all the

Masonic care he possibly could , and he would be well repaid by the compliment he had received . Successful as the lodge had been , he still expected to see it more successful . They did not particularly want great numbers , though numbers were desirable , but it was a great thing to see a lodge founded under such auspices as this attain the success it had . Bro . Dyson , W . M . 65 , in responding to the toast of

" The Visitors , " said he felt very highly the honour conferred upon him , while Bro . Larkin congratulated the W . M . on his occupancy of the chair of a lodge which , though not one of the oldest , was one of the foremost in London . Bros . Butt , Major Heaton , and Bridgewater also responded , the last brother observing , in the course of his remarks , that he had always felt that , however good they

might be , and however highly esteemed they might think themselves as men of the world , they could not but be better if they acted up to the sentiments which were instilled in them in a Masonic lodge . The Worshipful Master , in giving the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " said he felt he could not do justice to it , and to the qualifications of the Treasurer and the very industrious Secretary . The Strand Lodge owed

its future to the devoted services of P . M . Willing , who had performed the duties of his office in such an admirable way that they found on entering a new Masonic year the lodge was in a very prosperous condition and with a balance in hand . Last year there was a deficiency . This year the Treasurer had so husbanded the funds that he was able to congratulate himself that he held a very substantial balance , which he ( the W . M . ) should during

his year endeavour to increase . Bro . Willing was so indomitable in his exertions that he would give every assistance he possibly could . As to the Secretary , Bro . Stiles ' s name would be received with acclamation , because there was no lodge in London which possessed a more worthy brother , or a more indefatigable Secretary . Bro . Willing , P . M ., Treasurer , said that when they commenced the lodge , they commenced as a worthy band of

brothers , and he hoped that feeling would exist in spite of any eccentricities , though the number of the brethren should be doubled . The W . M . might be trusted to know what was best for the interests of the lodge . No Master attempted to force his own feelings and wishes on his lodge without believing that that was best for the lodge . He always thought the brethren made a great mistake in

electing him as Treasurer , be he was happy to say that Bro . Stacey had gone out of the chair with a balance , which , considering what had been given to the Charities , and how the brethren had enjoyed themselves , was a good one . Bro . Stiles , P . M ., Secretary , had very little to add , but

that little was of a complimentary character . "The Press , " " The Officers of the Lodge , " and the Tyler ' s toast concluded the evening , which was enlivened by some excellent singing , under the direction of Bro . Mackway , Organist of the lodge , by the Criterion choir boys .

HASTINGS . —Derwent Lodge ( No . 40 ) . —The regular monthly meeting of this old established lodge was held on Monday , the nth inst ., at the Castle Hotel , when Bro . F . H . Hallett , W . M ., presided , and was supported by the following officers and brethren : Bros . F . Plowman , I . P . M . ; T . H . Markwick , S . W . ; S . Chandler , J . W . ; F . Rossiter , P . P . G . D ., P . M ., Treasurer ; Capt . E . VV . J .

Hennah , P . G . D . of C , P . M ., Secretary ; E . C . Edwards , acting S . D . ; I . B . Foord , J . D . ; VV . Woodcock , Org . ; W . S . Allen , I . G . ; Leslie , Tyler ; W . Glemister , P . M . ; W . H . Russell , P . M . ; R . J . Reed , George Roddis , J . Stace , W . Cooper , G . Randell , Rev . G . H . Frewer , J . T . Edmed , G . H . Gaze , and others .

The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , Bro . G . H . Gaze was duly passed , and Bro . Edmed raised to the Degree ol M . M ., both ceremonies being most ably performed by the W . M . After two candidates had been proposed for initiation , the lodge was closed .

GUERNSEY . —Mariner ' s Lodge ( No . 168 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this old lodge , which dates from 17 S 4 , was held at the . Masonic Temple , Le Marchantstreet , St . Peter Port , on Wednesday , the 6 th inst . Among those present were Bros . Sparrow , W . M . ; Coombes , R . A ., I . P . M . ; Courtenay , P . M ., acting S . W . ; Thorne , P . M ., acting J . W . ; R . Smythson , P . M ., Sec . ;

De Jersey , P . M ., Treas . ; Emra Holmes , P . M ., P . P . G . R . and P . P . G . D . C . Suffolk ; and others . There were several visitors from Jersey and from the other lodges in the Island . Bro . the Rev . H . Millican , who had been previously initiated and passed in this lodge , was raised to the Third Degree , the grave and impressive ceremony being ably performed by the W . M . Part of the business of the

evening , as stated on the lodge summons was , " To consider a communication received from the W . M . of Doyle ' s Lodge , No . 84 , suggesting that the lodges should consolidate their Masonic Charity votes . If the same be adopted it is proposed that Bro . Pengelley , P . M ., be elected to represent this lodge on a Committee to be formed for dealing with the said votes . " The matter having been brought before the

lodge by the W . M ., after considerable discussion , it was resolved , on the motion of Bro . Emra Holmes , who said he would support anything which would promote harmony between Doyle ' s Lodge and the other sister lodges in the Island , that the suggestion be adopted , and that Bro . Pengelley should represent Mariners' Lodge on the proposed Committee . A communication was received from a brother

in distressed circumstances in Canada . Assistance was directed to be sent out , together with a letter of thanks to the Master of the lodge who had generously succoured the brother , who , it appeared , was very ill . The other business of the evening having been disposed of , the brethren retired for refreshment , a cordial welcome being given to all visitors .

After the usual loyal toasts , the W . M . proposed " The Past Masters , " coupling the toast with the name of Bro . Emra Holmes . Bro . Holmes , in responding , took the opportunity of urging the brethren to unite with the whole of the other lodges in the Bailiwick of Guernsey ( which includes Alderney ) in petitioning the Grand Master to form Guernsey

into a province , and to appoint a Provincial Grand Master , as had recently been done in the Isle of Man . He assured the brethren that Masonry would never take its proper position in the Island until a Provincial Grand Lodge was formed . Bro . P . Le Page , P . M ., Sec . 243 , also responded , and explained the scheme of consolidation of votes for the

Masonic Chanties in the Island . Bro . Milligan delivered an able , we had almost said an eloquent , speech on his health being proposed . Having testified to the impressiveness of the ceremony through which he had gone , and the admirable way in which the W . M . had performed the same , he said he should never

rest content until , in the course of time , he filled the chair himself , and became Worshipful Master of Mariners ' Lodge . Several brethren contributed to the harmony of the evening , and the brethren separated , after the Tyler ' s toast had been given , in customary form .

BOLTON . —St . John ' s Lodge ( No . 221 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held at the Commercial Hotel , Town Hall-square , on Wednesday , the 20 th inst . Present : Bros . Chas . Crompton , W . It was resolved to contribute £ 2 2 s . to the Binckes Presentation Fund . Bro . James Walker , S . W ., was appointed to represent the lodge on a Committee to be formed for the purpose of presenting a portrait of the Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Col . Starkie , to that worthy brother , in recognition of his services to the province during his tenure of office . Bro . Phillips , P . M . 34 S , rehearseed the lecture on the tracing board in the First Degree , in discharging which duty he acquitted himself in a most creditable manner and

received a very creditable vote of thanks from the lodge , which he briefly acknowledged , expressing his desire at all times to be of any possible service to the Craft . A gentleman was proposed for initiation , and "Rearty good wishes " tendered from the representatives of Grand Lodge , Provincial Grand Lodge , and other visiting brethren . A portion of the ancient rules and charges having been read by the S . W ., the lodge was closed .

BRIGHTLINGSEA . — Lodge of Hope ( No . 433 ) - —The installation meeting of this Essex lodge was held on Monday , the nth inst ., when Bro . the Rev . J . P . Britton , P . P . G . Installing Master , at a few minutes' notice , in the absence of W . Bro . Tisley , the lodge was closed . About 40 brethren afterwards dined together at the Swan Hotel , a capital repast being provided by the hostess , Mrs . Harmer . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . Bros . Mc Ewen and John Parker were passed to the Degree of F . C . Bro . G . D ., and with all due rite and ceremony inducted into the chair of K . S . The following brethren were invested as officers for the ensuing year : Bros . Bryce Blair , S . W . ; H . W . " Hearty good wishes " were expressed , and the lodge wag closed . The brethren subsequently celebrated the Festival of St . John at a banquet prepared by Bro . Perry , which gave every satisfaction . After the banquet , the W . M ., Bro . Priestnall , proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , prefacing each with a few appropriate remarks . Bro . H . L . Rocca , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., proposed "The

Masonic Charities , " a toast which , he said , was usually brought forward late in the evening , and consequentl y not as much attention paid to it as should be . In his opinion it was the toast of the evening , and should thus be considered . Bro . Rocca dwelt upon the excellences of the three London Institutions , and also of the East Lancashire Systematic , all of which were thoroughly deserving of the individual support of every member of the lodge . Bro . Rocca also

strongly commented upon the Chanty that should exist amongst the brethren one to another in bearing and forbearing with each other ' s faults and failings . All his remarks were well received , and the toast was drunk with Masonic honours . "The Health of the W . M . " was proposed by the I . P . M ., and was heartily drunk by the brethren , after which Bro . William Dumville sang "The Master ' s Toast , "

which is a departure from the usual " Here ' s to his health , ' and one which , to our thinking , is not a change fcr the better , as it seems still to leave something wanting . Bro . Priestnall thanked Bro . Riley for the encomiums passed on him , and the brethren for so cordially responding to the toast , assuring them nothing should be wanting on his part to merit the confidence they had reposed in him , and he would do all in his power to keep up the prestige

the Blair Lodge had so long enjoyed . The W . M . proposed " The Health of the I . P . M ., " which was well received , and responded to . Several other toasts were honoured , and a very enjoyable evening was spent . The musical portion of the entertainment was well carried out by those popular executants , Bros . Charles Turner , H . Miller , A . Lewtas , and VV . and H . Dumville .

brothers , and he hoped that feeling would exist in spite of any eccentricities , though the number of the brethren should be doubled . The W . M . might be trusted to know what was best for the interests of the lodge .

GUERNSEY . —Mariner ' s Lodge ( No . 168 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this old lodge , which dates from 17 S 4 , was held at the . Masonic Temple , Le Marchantstreet , St . Peter Port , on Wednesday , the 6 th inst . Among those present were Bros . Sparrow , W . M . ; Coombes , R . A ., I . P . M . ; Courtenay , P . M ., acting S . W . ; Thorne , P . M ., acting J .

Several brethren contributed to the harmony of the evening , and the brethren separated , after the Tyler ' s toast had been given , in customary form .

received a very creditable vote of thanks from the lodge , which he briefly acknowledged , expressing his desire at all times to be of any possible service to the Craft . A gentleman was proposed for initiation , and "Rearty good wishes " tendered from the representatives of Grand Lodge , Provincial Grand Lodge , and other visiting brethren . A portion of the ancient rules and charges having been read by the S . W ., the lodge was closed .

HULME . —Blair Lodge ( No . 815 ) . —The installation of Bro . J . L . Pricstnall took place , and the St . John ' s festival was celebrated , on Friday , the 8 th inst ., at the Town Hall , and we feel sure that all who have the pleasure of Bro . Priestnall ' s acquaintance will congratulate him most heartily upon his accession to the chair of K . S ., an honour which he thoroughly deserves and which he will at the expiration of his year of office prove to have

been worthily bestowed . There were present Bros . Dr . J . St . Patrick Riley , W . M . ; J . F . Anderson , I . P . M . ; J . L . Priestnall , S . W . ; Bryce Blair , J . W . ; H . W . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . Bros . Mc Ewen and John Parker were passed to the Degree of F . C . Bro . McEwen was subsequently passed to the Second Degree by Bro . J . Sheldrick , P . M . Bro . VV . Peel was raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M . by Bro . J . F . Anderson , P . M . The W . M . elect , Bro . Priestnall , was duly presented to the Installing Master , Bro . H . C . Rocca , P . P .

Lewtas , and VV . and H . Dumville .
