The Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Lord LEIGH , announced that he had appointed Bro . George Beech ( who had been 31 years Secretary to the province ) to be his Deputy , and then proposed that a Past D . P . G . Master ' s jewel should be purchased from the funds of the Piov . Grand Lodge and presented to Bro . J . T . Collins in appreciation of 10 year ' s faithful service as D . P . G . M . The roll of Prov . Grand Officers was called , all being present except two , who sent apologies .

Provincial Grand Lodge then adjourned , and the brethren proceeded in procession to St . Mary ' s Church , to attend Divine service , when Bro . Lord Leigh formerly handed over the pulpit that had been subscribed for and erected by the Freemasons of the Province , lo the vicar and parishoners of St . The Prov . Grand Secretary produced letters of regret at inability to be present from Bros . Percy Wallis , P . G . Treas ., Prov . G . Sec . Derbyshire ; T . B . Whytehead , P . P . G . W . North and Hist Yorkshire ; John Marshall , and Dr . Crow , P . G . Org . ; and apologies also were received from many P . P . G . Officers . The minutes of the annual meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge , held at Shellield on Tuesday , May 4 th , were presented by the Prov . Grana Secretary .

As these had been printed and circulated , Bro . J . I . LAST , P . M . ( T . L ) , moved— " That they be taken as read and confirmed . ' This was seconded by Bro . GEO . ALTHORP , P . M ., and carried unanimously . The PROV . GRAND MASTER , after thanking the brethren for their salutation , and complimenting the meeting upon its very representative character , addressed Prov . Grand Lodge . He said :

Brethren , —Since our last very large and most successful gathering at Sheffield in May , when the M . W . the Pro Grand M . ister honoured us with his presence , nothing very eventful appears to have happened in our midst . Most of the lodges during the summer have been in recess , and it is only now that they are displaying signs of renewed vigour and enterprise . The winter session , which commences this month , shows already that tlie period of inactivity is ovor , and gives promise of increase both in our numbers and influence . These additions to our roll , if

judiciously made , are matters of congratulation to all of us , but we cannot be too cautious or too discreet in our action in this regard . The advice given us in M ly by Lord Euston on this subject I would strongly emphasise and endorse . Numbers do not necessarily constitute strength , and our object must ba to admit to the privileges of our Order only those upon whom we can absolutely rely ; who will work with us and maintain with us that spirit of good fellowship and harmony which has so long characterised the Ma'k Degree in this province .

Brethren , we have doubtless , most of us , in our Masonic career , at some time or other , seen the fatal and pernicious effects of internal dissensions in lodges . There are some men , even with the best of motives , who are so constituted that they cannot restrain a tendency towards , it may be , unnecessary interference ; there are others who cannot be brought to see , eye to eye , with the rest ; whilst some even may be found whose sense of their own superiority is so strongly developed , that to meet with their brethren on the level is an absolute

impossibility . I venture to assert that brethren of the classes I have indicated are unfitted to become members of our great Fraternity , and though such m iy , through lack of caution , have gained admission into a Craft lodge , it by no means follows that they should therefore pass the portals of the Mark . I am speaking broadly and in general terms , and I would have only those permitted to join us who possess broad human sympathies , and who can look beyond the petty considerations which form so important a factor in the small mind . Freemasonry is the

gospel of humanity . It teaches precisely the doctrine so simply yet so forcibly laid down by the humble Carpenter of Nazareth , who declared that the whole law and the prophets were comprised in the one word—love . Love your God , and love your fellow man : that is the teaching of the sermon on thu mount , and that is the true inner meaning of Freemasonry . Let us bear this in mind in our dealings with our brethren , and we shall speedily see its beneficial results . There is another aspect of this great subject of Freemasonry , which does not

receive , in my opinion , all the attention it deserves . 1 allude to its history . It is true that immense advance has oeen made in this direction during the put 25 years ; that much light has been thrown upon what was obscure aud difficult ; that many fallacies have been exploded , and fantastic theories proved groundless . After clearing away the accumulated rubbish of centuries , the student is nowtryinj to build upon a solid basis of tact some superstructure , whose material may be sound , general outline correct , and details historically accurate . In this work we

can many of us render some assistance . With this view , our goad Bro . Pattinson has compiled his lecture . Anxious as I am that we should not only bs ardent Mark Masons , but also intelligent ones , I think it is desirable that efforts such as his should receive encouragement , and 1 will venture to promise that should any other brother conceive the idea that he can interest i > r instruct us in the history or traditions of Mark Masonry , we shall not hesitate to give him an equallyfavourable opportunity . I will not take up your tinvs any longer , bat will at once call up an Bro . Pattinson .

The remarks of the Prov . Grand Master were frequently applauded , and Bro . Pattinson also received a cordial greeting . We hope to give his paper ; in a future issue . The PKOV . GKAND MASTER invited comment and discussion . After a few remarks from the PROV . GRAND SECRETARY , and from Bro . J . T . LAST , On the motion of the DEPITY PROV . GRAND MASTER , seconded by the PROV . SENIOR GRAND WARDEN , a cordial vote of thanks was passed to Bro , Pattinson for his very able aud interesting address .

Bro . PATTINSON replied , and mentioned instances of Operative Mason work in the temples and buildings of the past , which would be declared impossible of achievement in these days . He was delighted if the leu observations he had compiled had proved interesting . The PROV . GRAND SECRETARY intimated that he had received a letter

from Bro . Wm . Scott Milligan , VV . M . of Fdarnley Lidge , Halifax , expressing regret that business compelled his absence , and giving a hearty invitation to the Prov . Grand Master to hold the next annual meeting in that town , under the banner of Lodge 58 , assuring him of a kindly welcjinj . To this the Prov . Grand Master acceded .

A cordial vote of thanks to Bro . Geo . Martin , W . M ,, and the brethren of the Old York Lodge , for the excellent arrangements which they had made for the comfort of Prov . Grand Lodge that day , was proposed by the Deputy , Bro . J BARKER , seconded by Bro . G . H . PARKE , supported by the PROV . GRAND MASTER , and carried unanimously . Bro . G . MARTIN made very appropriate and suitable acknowledgment . There was no other business , and Prov . Grand Lodge was closed . The brethren afterwards dined in the hall , when the loyal and Masonic toasts usual 011 these occasions were duly proposed and honoured .
