GRAND COUNCIL OF THE ALLIED MASONIC DEGREES .

The annual meeting of the above Grand Council was held at Mark Masons' Hall , Great Queen-street , on Monday , the iSth inst ., under the presidency of Bro . the Earl of Euston , 33 , Grand Master . The brethren present included : Bros . Brig .-Surg . J . B . Cockburn , G . S . W . ; R . Loveland Loveland , Deputy G . Master ; C . F . Matier , P . D . G . M ., G . Sec ; C . H . Driver , P . D . The Grand Council was opened , and the minutes read and confirmed . The GRAND SECRETARY read the report for the year , showing that no brethren had been received into the Allied Degrees—a number considerabl y more than that of any previous similar period—the total number registered being 1051 . Tne report further stated that the Sovereign College of the Allied Degrees for the U . S . A . had made formal complaint to the M . W .

G . M . that the body styling i'self the Grand Council or Conclave of the Order of the S .-cret Monitor for Great Britain and Ireland , Src , had , in defiance of all Masonic law and etiquette , violated the territory of the Uniied States by granting a warrant or charter empowering certain brethren in the town of Rockland , Maine , to confer the Degree of Secret Monitor . Enquiries hiving failed to elicit any satisfactory explanation , the Sovereign

Grand College , U . S . A ., had most reluctantly been obliged to sever all connections with the bjdy referred t > , and had also proclaimed them to be a spurious body . The Sovereign Grand Master , U . S . A ., also gave authority to the M . W . G . M . of the Allied Degrees , England , \ -c . enabling him to legally assume the government of tne Degree of Sxret Monitor . A meeting of the Executive Committee was held at Mark Masons' Hall in June last , when a proclamation was authorised and commanded , there being only

one dissentient voice , calling upon all regularly registered members of the various Degrees owing allegiance to the Grand Council of the Allied Degrees to withdraw from all connection with the body styling itself the Grar . d Conclave of the Order of ihe Secet Monitor for the United Kingdom , itc , and prohibiting any bro ht-r or companion from holding Masonic communon with any of the several conclaves nf lhat body . Autnoritv was given , under letters patent from the Sjveieign Grand Master for the United

States , to the councils under the Grand Council to induce duly qualified candidates into the Degree of Secret Monicor . Since the issue of the proclamation the D . 'greehad been conferred by certain of the councils , and the Degree of Grand T yler of King Solomon had also been included among tne Degrees under the supsrvision of the Grand Council of the Allied Degrees . The report concluded with a sympathetic reference to the deaths of Bos . J . L . Maihtr , P . D G . M ., and H . Hotham , who was admitted to the D . 'gree of Red Cross of Babylon so far back as 1839 ,

The report as read was received and unanimously adopted , as were also the Grand Treasurer ' s accounts , showing an increased balance of £ 70 10 s . id . The M . W . G . M . re-appointed Bro . R . Loveland Loveland as D . G . M ., and he was proclaimed and saluted . Bro . Gordon Miller was unanimously re-elected Grand Treasurer , and the following appointment wee made :

W ., to present the centenary warrant , which he did somewhat in the following terms : He said it was indeed a very great honourand one which would be much appreciated

by him , being the first he had ever been called upon to do , and therefore he would peform it with much pleasure . He could not but feel a regret at the absence of the Prov . G . M ., the Karl of Warwick , who was engaged in his civtf duties at Warwick , and also of the Dep . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Philbrick , for all knew how they lived in the hearts of the brethren . In handing the warrant to the WMhe could not help repeating the few but simple words in the ritualthat he

.. , *¦ ~ " ~ v . . « . , - . ~ r b — — .. — r -- - — . - . . . — , . ,, would " hand it on to his successors pure and unsullied as you now receive it , being fully convinced that that would be so . Also to every thinking Mason those tenets should teach him how serious his duties were , first to God , a "" secondly to his neighbour , and the more he saw of Freemasonry and its princip le carried out the more he was assured England would never lose her greatness . The

W . M . had a great responsibility thrust upon him and it should be his aim to impfC " upon the brethren the du ' . y of upholding those glorious traditions aid c * rrymrf them out to their utmost . The lodge had gone through its trials and troubles , and he now congratulated the brethren on the success and high honour it had attained in the province . He wished the G . A . O . T . U . might spare the W . M . "

The lodge was opened and the Grand Officers saluted . The W . M . called upon the Secretary to read the dispensation granted by the M . W . G . M . giving permission lor holding the present meeting , which having been done , he asked Bro . Colonel LocKttooo , M . P ., Prov . S . G .
