On glancing at the agenda paper set down for the meetingof Grand Lodgeon Wednesday next there will be found a motion by Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . W ., to grant the sum of 200 guineas in aid " of the proposed establishment and permanent endowment of a Scholarship in connection with the Royal Masonic Institution

for Boys . " This is good news for those who have proposed and are engaged in carrying out the scheme , to which we took occasion to refer in our "Notes" of last week . The first list of subscriptions which appeared in our advertisement columns was a large one , and we may hope that with close upon . £ 250 promised within the

first week after the announcement of the scheme and the motion to be brought forward by so prominent a Mason and one so well disposed towards our Institutions in Grand Lodge on Wednesday next , the success of the Scholarship Fund is already in a fair way of being ensured .

* It appears from the same list of agenda that warrants for nine new lodges have been granted since the

Masonic Notes.

September Communication . Of these one — the Borough Lodge , No . 2589—will meet in London ; live in the Provinces , namely , Lewisham Lodge , No . 25 S 2 , Smethwick ; the St . Thomas , No . 25 S 2 , Tibshelf , Derbyshire ; the Queen Victoria , No . 2584 , Manchester , in the Province of East Lancashire ; the

St . Nicholas , No . 2586 , Scarborough , in . North and East Yorkshire ; and the Radnor , No . 2587 , Folkestone , in the Province of Kent . The remaining three are located abroad , namely , the Doornfontein , No . 25 S 5 , meeting at the place from which it derives its name in South Africa ; the Beauaraba , No . 2588

Pittsworth , m the District of Queensland ; and the Nirnava , No . 2590 , Ghazipur , in the District of Bengal . These raise the total number of new lodges for which warrants have been granted since the Quarterly Communication in December , 1894 , 1052—a goodly addition and one that includes several that , even in these early days of their career , have already made their mark .

» The published Transactions of the Provincial Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Chapter of Durham for the year 1895 make an interesting pamphlet , showing clearly that the lodges in this influential province exhibit great attachment to the Craft , and fulfil their

duties ably and with regularity . The reports that were submitted at the annual meetings of these two bodies in September testified to this , as well a > to the liberal support which is annually forthcoming in behalf of the Central Charities and of the Durham Educational Fund , which has been in existence for some years , and

at the present contributes towards the maintenance and education of 16 children , the average payment per child being not far short of _ £ io a year . There are 36 lodges on the roll of the Province , and , from the returns made up to the 31 st December , 1894 , which were recently laid before Provincial Grand Lodge , it appears that the aggregate membership of these lodges is

2749 . As regards Royal Arch Masonry , there are 12 chapters on the roll , with an aggregate membership of 462 , as compared with 43 6 the previous year . The Transactions include reports of several lodge meetings , at which banners were presented and unfurled by the Provincial Grand Secretary , and of a special meeting of St . John ' s Chapter , No . 80 , Sunderland .

# * * The Quarterly Communication of Mark Grand Lodge will be held at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesday , the 3 rd prox . From the report of the General Board , which will be then submitted , we learn that warrants for two new lodges—the Dramatic , No . 487 London :

and the Goulburn Valley , No . 488 , Shepparton , Victoria—have been issued since the previous meeting of Grand Lodge , while during the three months ending the 30 th September last there were issued 205 Mark and 73 Royal Ark Mariner certificates , raising the total number registered in the former Degree to 34 , 678 and in the latter to 4664 .

We also learn from the same source that Bro . John Locke has been appointed to succeed Bro . Col . John Elliott , C . B ., C . M . G ., who has quitted the station and resigned in consequence , as Dist . Grand Master for the West India Islands , while the patents of the Prov . G .

Masters for Berks and Oxon , Cornwall , East Anglia , Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , Lancashire , Lincoln , shire , North Wales , and West Yorkshire have been , in each case , continued for a further period of three years . * * *

We are further informed that the respected Prov . Grand Master for Kent , Bro . the Rev . Thomas Robinson , who had held the office for 16 years , has died , to the great regret of his Province and Mark brethren generally , and that Bro . Sir Pryse Pryse , Bart ., after

having officiated as Prov . Grand Master for South Wales for 12 years , has tendered the resignation of his office . These Provinces will lor the present remain in charge of their respective Deputy Prov . Grand Masters . » *

Two lodges—the Ramsay , No . 180 , Murree , and the Joppa , No . 312 , Delhi , having been reported as having ceased to meet for several years past , the Board recommend that their last known Worshipful Masters should be summoned to show cause why such lodges

should not be erased from the roll of Grand Lodge , The Board further proposes that a brother who has been expelled from Craft Masonry by the Grand Lodge of Tasmania should be expelled likewise from the Mark Degree .

* * * Beyond the consideration of the report of the General Board , the only business of moment to be transacted is the nomination of a Grand Master for the ensuing year , and of a brother or brethren to fill the office of Grand Treasurer during the same period .
