MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will hold their next regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Saturday next , the 7 th inst . The Langton Lodge of Instruction has sjone into recess for the summer , and will resume work on Thursday , the gth October .

The Canadian Craftsman thinks that a "rough ashlar " is a Mason who does not subscribe for a Masonic paper or read a Masonic book . Lady Stanley of Preston and her daughter , who are on their return to Canada , hope to land in time to take part in the reception of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught .

We are glad to hear that Bro . Lord Alcester is getting on well after his recent serious accident , and is able to get about freely , though with great care , so as to prevent a relapse . Bro . Walter Long , M . P ., and Lady Doreen Long have taken the Manor House , Great Cheverill , Wiltshire , and intend residing there the greater part of the year when out of London .

A grand ball is to be given by the Benchers of the Inner Temple on the 26 th June , at which Prince Christian , who is a Bencher , and the Princess Christian are expected to be present . The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh visited the galleries at Waterloo House , Pall-mall , on Wednesday , and viewed the Queen's picture of the Jubilee celebration in Westminster Abbey by W . E . Lockhart .

Mr . Stanley ' s wedding will , according to present arrangements , take place at Westminster Abbey on July 12 . The officiating clergymen will be the Bishop of Ripon , the Master of the Temple , and the Dean of Westminster . Our attention has been called to an error in the List of Subscriptions to the Girls' School Festival last week . Bro . Ockenden ' s list , as Steward for the Lebanon Chapter , No . 1326 , was given as £ 29 2 s . It should have been £ 39 2 s .

The ceremony of initiation will be rehearsed at the Finsbury Park Lodge of Instruction , No . 12 SS , held at the Cock Tavern , Highbury , N ., on Saturday , the 31 st inst ., with a full choir . The lodge will be opened at 8 p . m ., in the large hall .

Bro . the Duke of Abercorn and his son , the Marquis of Hamilton , have gone to Ireland for the Whitsun holidays , while the Duchess has been staying firstly with the Dowager Duchess at Coates Castle , Pulborough . and afterwards with her half-brother , Farl Howe , at Penn House , Amersham .

Bro . Barclay , who is well-known in the local dramatic circles of Hammersmith and Shepherd ' s Bush , was engaged by Miss Bella Pateman for "Master and Man " at the Royal County Theatre , Reading , during Whitsun week . Miss Clara Barclay also played the child in the same play .

On this ( Friday ) evening the three installation and the exaltation ceremonies will be rehearsed by Comp . F . Hilton , P . 7 .., Preceptor , at the Star Chapter of Instruction , Stirling Castle , Camberwell , at 7 . 30 p . m ., when all Royal Arch Masons who believe in good ritual working should : t : end .

The Duchess of Fife has consented to patronise an evening concert which will be given by Miss Louise Borowski at Prince's Hall , Piccadilly , on the gth prox ., with the laudable object of liquidating in part the debt caused by the extension of the Royal Female School of Art , recently opened by the Princess Christian .

The Countess of Dunraven gave a dance at her residence in Kensington Palace Gardens on the 23 rd inst ., among the guests present being Bro . the Duke of Athol and Lady Helen Stewart Murray , the Countess of Crawford and Lad y Evelyn Lindsay , and Bro . Earl Percy and the Ladies Louisa and Edith Percy .

The birthday proper of the Queen fell on Saturday last , the 24 th inst ., when her Majesty completed her 71 st year . There were the usual demonstrations of loyalty in the Royal Borough of Windsor . The Corporation banner was hoisted on the Guildhall , the bells of St . George ' s Chapel , and the parish church rung out merrily , and Royal salutes were fired in the Long Walk and near Virginia Water . Her Majesty had reached Balmoral from Windsor the afternoon of the previous day , and so spent the day in her Highland home .

The veteran Grand Secretary , Bro . T . S . Parvin , is always looking after the interest of the Iowa . Masonic Library , and is now endeavouring to make a list of all the Iowa authors and a collection of their works , especially appertaining to the history of that State . liven the Indians of Iowa are not to be neglected , for in the appeal just issued Bro . Parvin states his anxiety to complete the

particulars respecting their history , relijion , ceremonies , and myths as far as possible , even to the preservation of axes , spear-heads , and other curious articles . Already he has secured copies of half of the country histories published , and doubtless will not be long without the remainder . The list of Iowa authors appended number over 250 names , and the grand Library Buildin < rs for the

great collection of Masonic works , medals , & c , is fitly represented on the title-page . A noble pile , and a great honour to the Grand Lodge of Iowa . It is , in reality , Bro . Parvin's monument , and as his son is Deputy Grand Secretary , and following in his father ' s wake , the name of Parvin is not likely to be soon forgotten by the Masons of that State .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers m this country , to the great injury of our own working people , so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., and Lord George Hamilton attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on the 23 rd inst .

Bro . Akers-Douglas , M . P ., has been spending the Whitsun holidays at Chilston Park , near Maidstone , and Bro . Lord Elcho , M . P ., and Lady Elcho are at Felixstowe , where her ladyship intends to remain for a month . The Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) and Prince Henry of Battenberg visited McLean ' s Galleries in the Haymarket , on Wednesday , for the purpose of inspecting Mr . E . | . Poynter ' s picture of "The Queen of Shcba ' s visit to King Solomon . " ~

On Wednesday the Prince of Wales drove to the Temple Gardens and there opened the Flower ? how which has been organised by the Royal Agricultural Society . The collecof exhibits is a very fine one , and his Royal Highness frequently expressed his admiration of the beautiful display .

According to present arrangements , the Queen will give a grand garden party at Windsor Castle on the return of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught . There will also be garden parties at Buckingham Palace in honour of the event .

Ihe Charity Commissioners' "scheme for the management of the foundation known as Christ ' s Hospital , " which has been altered in accordance with the judgment of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council , was issued on Wednesday in its amended form as a Parliamentary paper .

At a meeting of the Sun and Sector Lodge , No . 9 62 , Workington , held on Wednesday the 21 st inst ., Bro . Isaac Dickinson , VV . M ., presiding , Bro . G . B . Mackay , J . VV ., was elected VV . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . J . Paterson was unanimously re-elected Treasurer .

The Grand Festival of the Order of the Secret Monitor will take place at Mark Masons' Hall , Great Queenstreet , on Wednesday , June iSth . A balance sheet is issued with the summons , which shows the Order to be in a flourishing condition .

The Princess of Wales and her daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , arrived at Marlborough House from Sandringham on Wednesday evening , while Prince Henry of Battenberg- reached London the same day from Balmoral and left the following for the Isle of Wight , where he will join his yacht .

The will of Bro . Raynham William Stewart , late of no , Cannon-street , and of 6 , Colville-terrace , Netting Hill , solicitor , who died on the 13 th ult ., was proved on the gth inst . by Mr . Francis Forbes Mumford Stewart , the son , and Mr . Robert Stephen Mann , the nephew , the executors , the value of the personal estate exceeding £ 3000 .

Bro . li . J . Acworth was , on Monday , at the Cock Hotel , Highbury , chosen W . M . elect of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 . Bro . Acworth , who is known as the proprietor of the Middlesex County Times , is alrea ly Past Master of Lodges 123 , [ 612 , and 2077 , and last year contested the office of Provincial Grand Treasurer for Essex , for which he will again be a candidate at the provincial meeting .

The Princess of Wales , accompanied by Prince Albert Victor and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , distributed at the Guards' Industrial Home on Friday , the 23 rdinstant , the prizes gained by the girls of the institution . In the evening the Prince and Princess , with their eldest son and his two sisters , dined with the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador in Belgrave-square .

The Queen has been pleased to confer upon Prince Albert Victor , eldest son of the Prince of Wales , a Peerage of the United Kingdom , by the style and title of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and Earl of Athlone . The last Duke of Clarence was also the last Lord High Admiral of England , and who subsequently ascended the throne as William IV .

At a recent meeting of the Anglesey Lodge , No . 1113 , Bro . Foster presented the W . M . ( Bro . Richard Thomas ) , on behalf of the lodge , with a large album containing the portraits of the officers . The latter were the gifts of Bro . T . Mills , I . P . M . 3 S 4 . About 30 members and visiting brethren sat down at the banquet , which was served at the Victoria Hotel .

The Council of the Royal Society of British Artists have , at the request of the National Sunday League , consented to open the annual exhibition of pictures in their galleries , Suffolk-street , Pall Mall , on Sunday , ist and Sth June . When next Bank Holiday arrives , Bro . Edward Terry will set forth on a provincial tour , which will extend , however , over five weeks only , the cities and towns visited being Edinburgh , Glasgow , Liverpool , Birmingham , and Scarborough . On this occasion Bro . Terry ' s repertory will include two new pieces—not "Sweet Lavender , " which has already been introduced to the provinces by Mr . 'I ' . W . Robertson .

Last week , at the kind invitation of Bro . G . H . Anderton , P . M ., the members of the St . Cuthbert ' s Lodge , Howden , were taken for a day ' s excursion up the river Ouse in the steam yacht Rob b oy , belonging to that brother . The trip was intended as a farewell gathering to the VV . M ., Bro . the Rev . L . L . M . Rees , who is about to leave the town in order to take up the curacy of St . Luke's , Derby . At York the visitors disembarked , and visited the various places of interest in that ancient city .

The annual meeting and half-yearly election of the Infant Orphan Asylum were held on Thursday at the Cannonstreet Hotel . The Treasurer , Mr . John Deacon , was in the chair . The report stated that C 12 children had been benefited by the asylum during the year . Sixty-two had been admitted , and C 4 had left . There had been durin "

the year one death , which had occurred at the asylum ' s convalescent home at Margate . The school inspector had reported very favourably on the schools . The report bavin " been adopted and the Committee chosen for the ensuing year , the poll was opened for the election of 40 children being ten more than the usual number .

's eighth annual exhibition of original drawings in black and white will be opened on

The sanction of the Home Secretary has been obtained for the performance of music at the Royal Military Exhibition on Wednesdays until n o'clock p . m . Messrs . Sotheby have just sold for £ 64 a letter of Sir Isaac Newton to Mr . Robert Hooke , of Gresham College . It is dated March 5 th , 16 77 , and refers to a " frivolous dispute " respecting lost papers .

Lady Monckton has consented to assist at a matinee that Mr . H . V . Esmond , lately a member of the Shaftesbury Theatre Company , has arranged to give at the Queen ' s Gate Hall on Friday , June 6 . VVe regret to announce the death of Bro . J . M . Chamberlain , P . M . and Sec . of the Lodge of Asaph , No . 1319 . The funeral will take place at the South Metropolitan Cemetery to-day ( Friday ) at 2 o'clock .

Bro . Dr . Richardson thinks the time is coming when we shall have artificial legs of mutton , which , after all , are only grass converted into something chemically different by passing into the body of an animal . By permission of the authorities , the Craft will assemble in the Parliament House at 2 . 30 to dress before proceeding to St . Giles ' . It is over 30 years since Divine service was conducted under the auspices of Grand Lodge , and on that occasion nearly 700 brethren assembled in St . Giles' .

P ., and Lady Elcho are at Felixstowe , where her ladyship intends to remain for a month . The Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) and Prince Henry of Battenberg visited McLean ' s Galleries in the Haymarket , on Wednesday , for the purpose of inspecting Mr . E . | . On Wednesday the Prince of Wales drove to the Temple Gardens and there opened the Flower ? how which has been organised by the Royal Agricultural Society . The collecof exhibits is a very fine one , and his Royal Highness frequently expressed his admiration of the beautiful display .

The Queen has been pleased to confer upon Prince Albert Victor , eldest son of the Prince of Wales , a Peerage of the United Kingdom , by the style and title of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and Earl of Athlone . The annual meeting and half-yearly election of the Infant Orphan Asylum were held on Thursday at the Cannonstreet Hotel . The Treasurer , Mr . John Deacon , was in the chair . The report stated that C 12 children had been benefited by the asylum during the year . Sixty-two had been admitted , and C 4 had left . There had been durin "

the year one death , which had occurred at the asylum ' s convalescent home at Margate . The school inspector had reported very favourably on the schools .
