THE ESTABLISHMENT of Colonial troops at Chelsea Barracks has ceased to exist , the Colonial non-commissioned officers and men that still remain in England being attached to the 3 rd Grenadier Guards .

PRINCESS HENRY OK BATTENBERG will to-morrow ( Saturday ) lay the foundationstone of a new block at the Ventnor Consumption Hospital , which is about to be erected as a memorial to the late Prince Henry of Battenberg . AMONG THE numerous functions which have been arranged to take place during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Ireland is the presentation , in the Phernix Park , Dublin , of new colours to the 2 nd Royal Fusiliers and the Kmg ' s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry . The ceremony is fixed for Tuesday , the 24 th August .

THE DUKE OF CAMURIDGE attended the Royal Naval School , Eltham , on Monday , on the occasion of the distribution of prizes and gave the boys some excellent advice as to their conduct in the future . H . the Prince and Princess of Wales , at Marlborough House , on Monday , and stayed to luncheon . In the afternoon , H . R . H . the Prince presided at a meeting of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1 S 51 .

Lord Amherst of Hackney .

The Duke and Duchess of York and Prince Christian arrived on Monday , and the Duke of Cambridge , Prince and Princess Edward of Saxe-VVcimar , the Earl and Countess of Cadogan , Bro . the Earl of Durham , the Earl of Crewe , Bro . Lord and Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox , were also among the guests .

BANK HOLIDAY SAILINGS . —The New Palace Steamers , Limited , announce that , in order to meet the wishes of the public , they will run a special steamer on Friday , the 30 th inst ., from Old Swan Pier , at 9 . 20 a . m ., for Southend , Margate , and Ramsgate , calling at Greenwich , Woolwich , and Tilbury , On Saturday , 31 st July , Sunday , ist August , and on Monday ( Bank Holiday ) the La Marguerite , Royal Sovereign . Koh-inoor , and La Belgique will run excursions at the usual times for Southend , Margate , Ramsgate , Boulogne , and Ostend .

THE PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER FOR DEVON is to assemble at the Freemasons' Hall , Tiverton ,. on Monday , the 9 th prox ., at 3 . 15 p . m ., by orderof Bro . Walter Goddard Rogers , P . A . G . Sojourner of England , the acting Grand Superintendent . There are 2 S Royal Arch chapters in the county , the one at Tiverton being No . 1125 , formed in 1 S 72 . The officers will be appointed for the ensuing term and other formal business transacted . Arrangements have been made with the railway co mpanies for companions to travel at reduced fares on production of their Masonic clothing .

VISCOUNT CRANI . HY , eldest son of Bro . the Earl and Countess of Onslow , will come of age on Monday , the 23 rd prox ., and great preparations are being made to celebrate the event . Bro . Lord Onslow , as High Steward of the Borough of Guildford , will entertain at dinner the Mayor and Corporation , with the leading men engaged in local government in the neighbourhood and in the county . The tenantry on the estates in Surrey , Essex , and Norfolk will also be entertained , and the Countess will give a garden party and a ball .

THE PRINCESS MARY , Duchess of Teck , laid the foundation-stone on Wednesday of a new hospital , which is about to be erected at Isleworth by the Richmond Corporation and Heston Isleworth District Council . A silver trowel and illuminated address were presented to her Royal Highness , to whom it was explained that accommoda ' tion would be provided for 46 patients , and that provision had been made for the enlargement of the hospital , if necessary , in the future . The Du : hess expressnd the pleasure it had given her to be present and perform the ceremony , and was heartily cheered on leaving .

THE KING OF SIAM will arrive at Spithead to-day ( Friday ) , and will be received by the Duke of York on behalf of her Majesty and the nation . One of the Queen ' s Equerries ha ; been appointed to attend upon the King , and oa his arrival in London his Majesty will be received by the Duke of Cambridge and Bro . the Duke of Portland , Master of the Horse . and will . with his suite , be conviyed in Royal carriages to Backingham Palace , where he will reside till Friday , the 6 th prox ., when he visits Taolow Court as the guest of Bro . W . H . Grenfell . On Wediesday , the 4 th prox ., thj King will visit the Queen at Osborne , and not improbably will be accompanied by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales from Portsmouth .

THE PRESENT RUN of " My Friend the Prince " will terminate after Friday evening , August Cth , in order to give the members of the company a much-needed rest prior to the provincial tour , after which the play will be resumed at the Garrick . In the interim Mr . Brickwell has arranged with Mr . George Edwardes for a fortn ' ght ' s run of the celebrated Gaiety musical success " In Town " with a colossal company prior to their departure for America . After the run of "In Town" Offenbach ' s comic opera " L 3 Perichole " will be staged with Miss Florence St . John in the title role , supported by a powerful company , including Messrs . John Le Hay and Fred Kayc .

THE .- " EMBERS of the Drury Lane Lodge , No . 2127 , had a delightful river trip on Saturday last . The party boarded the steam launch Emperor , at Taplow , and proceeded to Marlow , where in the garden attached to the Compleat Angler tea was served . Later in the day the company dined at the Ray Mead Hotel , Boulter ' s Lock . Bro . Henry Neville , the W . M . of the lodge , presided , and amongst those present were Bros . James Fernandez , Lionel Brough , Henry Dundas , Harry Nicholls , Walter Everard , Nye Chart , W . Slaughter , F . Walford , J . D . Bsveridge , G ; offrey Thorn , and W .

Lestocq . After dinner Bro . Henry Neville proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts . Bro . Geoffrey Thom ably retpondedfor "The Visitors and Ladies . " liro . Harry Nicholls humorously acknowledged the toast of "lhe Secretary of the Lodge , " recalling the time when he went to the Olympic to see the famous Bob Brierley . In after years it came about that he played Melter Moss to Mr . Neville ' s Brierley , at the Crystal Palace . The toast of * ' The Worshi p ful Master , " was proposed in eloquent terms by Bro . Fernandez , and responded to in an excellent speech by Bro . Henry Neville .

THE OFFERTORY taken at the Masonic church parade at GIossop , on Sunday last , in aid of Wood ' s Hospital realised about £ 17 . THE DUCHESS OF B UCKINGHAM AND CHANDOS and Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton have left town for Tatton Park , near Knutsford . BRO . J AIRD , M . P ., has consented to lay the foundation-stone of the Metropolitan Theatre of Varieties , Edgware-road , on Tuesday , the 17 th August .

THE LORD CHANCELLOR ( Bro . Lord Halsbury ) intends spending the long vacation in Scotland , and has rented the Lunga Shooting in Argyllshire from Capt . MacDougall , AT A Common Hall of the Weavers' Company , Mr . J . B . Ingle , of No . 20 , Threadneedle-street , was re-elected the Upper Bailiff ( Master ) for the ensuing year . BRO . LORD HALSBI'RV distributed the prizes to the successful pupils at Whitgift

Grammar School , on Wednesday , and was afterwards entertained at luncheon in the library . THE EMPRESS EUGENIE has returned to England from her yachting trip , and after spending two days in London , arrived at her residence , Farnborough-hill , last evening . Her Imperial Majesty was looking remarkably well .

THE DUCHESS OF FIFE , the Princess Victoria of Wales , Prince and Princess Charles of Denmark , Prince and Princess Adolphus of Teck , and Prince Francis of Teck witnessed the performance of " Lohengrin " at the Royal Italian Opera on Wednesday . MILITARY MANIEUVRES will take place in the country lying between Dublin and the Curragh Camp during the second week in August , and Bro . Lord Roberts , under whose direction they will be held , has issued the necessary orders for the guidance of the principal officers .

AN OFFICIAL intimation has been received by the Mayor of Portsmouth that the Duke and Duchess of Connaught will pay a visit to that town on Saturday , August 7 th , to lay the foundation-stone of a new hospital , which is to be erected in commemoration of the Record Reign . SEVERAL MEETINGS convened by Bro . Lord Kinnaird , Lord Radstock , and others were held in different parts of the country , on Wednesday , for the purpose of calling attention to the distress now prevailing in India in consequence of the earthquake , the famine , and the disturbances at Poona and Calcutta .

PRINCE CHARLES OF DENMARK left London on Thursday evening by the boat train from Victoria , on his way to Copenhagen . Before leaving Marlborough House his Royal Highness took leave of Princess Charles and Princess Victoria , who joined the Prince and Princess of Wales at Drayton to-day ( Friday ) , and proceeded with them to Portsmouth .

As A MEMORIAL of the 60 th year ot the reign of the Queen , it is proposed to build an English church in Lucerne , and an appeal for funds with this object in view is now being made , The cost of the site and the church will be £ 7000 , and contributions may be addressed to the Rev . Canon Hurst , Secretary of the Colonial and Continental Church Society , 9 , Serjeants' Inn , Fleet-street , E . C . H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES attended a meeting of a Standing Committee ( Natural History ) of the Trustees and afterwards a general meeting of the Trustees of the British Museum on Saturday morning last . In the evening H . R . H . the Princess of Wales and Prince and Princess Charles of Denmark visited the Royal Italian Opera and witnessed a performance of ' * Faust . "

ON THURSDAY the London County Council completed the purchase of Fortunegreen , West Hampstead , which is to be used as a recreation ground , for £ Sooo . The Green comprises about three acres , to be maintained as an open space by the Hampstead Vestry , which has agreed to contribute £ 3000 towards the expense , a similar sum having been given by the London County Council , and the remainder raised by subscription .

THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of the Asiatic Provincjs of Russia has sent Bro . Woolrych Perowne an invitation to arrange for a visit to Central Asia of a party of Englishmen in November next . The Minister of War has granted the use of the military railway from the Caspian to Samarkand free of the restrictions usuall y imposed on foreigners , and several gala functions have been arranged for the entertainment of the visitors at cities and towns en route .

BROS , THE RIGHT HON . A . AKERS-DOUGLAS , Lord Balfour of Burleigh , Lord Halsbury ( Lord-Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord-Chancellor of Ireland ) , Sir M . Hicks-Beach , Bart . ( Chancellor of the Exchequor ) , the Duke of Devonshire , Lo . d George Hamilton , the Right Hon . W . H . Long , and Sir M . White Ridley , Bart ., were among the ministers that attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Tuesday .

THE MAHARAJAH DHIRAJ Sir Pertab Singh , G . C . S . I ., Regent of Jodhpore ( A . D . C . to the Prince of Wales ) , before leaving England bedamea "Life Member " of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families' Association . Thakur Hari Singh and Kunwar Dho Kal Singh also sent a donation of £ 5 each . The proceeds of the garden fete at Chelsea Hospital , in aid of the Homes for Nurses of the Association , amounted to £ ioG 2 .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg , and attended by Bro . Col . the Hon . Sir H . Byng , and Sir Arthur Bigge visited Cowes on Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of receiving an address of congratulation from the District Council on the completion of the 60 th year of her reign . The town was en fete during the day , and in the evening was beautifully illuminated . Her Majesty ' s reception was most enthusiastic , and after receiving the address , the Queen verbally expressed to the Chairman of the council the pleasure she had derived from her visit .

BRIGHTON COLLEGE celebrated its Jubilee on Tuesday , when Bro . Gerald Loder , M . P ., distributed the prizes to the successful pupils . In the course of a Latin speech by one of the bnys it was mentioned that among former pupils of the College were Sir H . Pendergast , V . C , Sir Herbert Stewart , Lieut .-Col . Hovenden , Capt . Gill , R . E ., Capt . Peyton , Lieut . Selous , of the Warren Hostings , Sir Edward Poynter , President of the Royal Academy , and Professor Holland .

THE Q UEEN has , through the Lord Mayor , presented the silver Diamond Jubilee Commemoration Medal to the City Swordbearer , Macebearer , and Marshal , in celebration of the Jubilee proceedings in the City , and has forwarded a stiver clasp to Bro . W . J . Soulsby , C . B ., the Lord Mayor ' s Secretary , to be worn with the Jubilee Medal which her Majesty had already been pleased to present him . A silver medal has likewise been given to the Lord Mayor's eldest son .

ACCORDING TO THE Registrar General s returns the death rate in London , under the influence of variable winds , a higher temperature , and electric disturbances , has been steadily increasing until last week it reached 20 per 1000 , which , however , is only slightly in excess of the average rate of the 33 great towns which are included in these weekly returns . For greater London the rate was 17 . 7 per 1000 ; forCroydon just over 10 ; and for Brighton 14 , 2 , being a slight increase over the previous week .

A CORRESPONDENT who has been staying in Somersetshire witnessed a rural tragedy while exploring a combe between Minehead and Porlock . A hawk had swooped down on a pigeon , had ruthlessly killed it , and was feasting on the remains when the traveller disturbed it and drove it off . On one leg of the victim he found a band of either ivory or bone , on which was inscribed "L 61 , 1895 . " Should the owner be wondering at the prolonged absence of the bird he will now know that its non-appearance is due to a cause beyond its own control . —Daily Telegraph .

Grecians , the English oration containing , as a matter of course , many eloquent references to the Queen and her glorious reign . On the same day " Apposition " at St . Paul ' s School was held at Hammersmith , and in the course of his speech the High Master announced that , in compliance with the Queen ' s wishes , an additional week ' s holiday would be allowed . This and the statement that a swimming-bath would he erected caused great satisfaction among the boys .

MILITARY MANIEUVRES will take place in the country lying between Dublin and the Curragh Camp during the second week in August , and Bro . Lord Roberts , under whose direction they will be held , has issued the necessary orders for the guidance of the principal officers .

AN OFFICIAL intimation has been received by the Mayor of Portsmouth that the Duke and Duchess of Connaught will pay a visit to that town on Saturday , August 7 th , to lay the foundation-stone of a new hospital , which is to be erected in commemoration of the Record Reign . ON THURSDAY the London County Council completed the purchase of Fortunegreen , West Hampstead , which is to be used as a recreation ground , for £ Sooo . The Green comprises about three acres , to be maintained as an open space by the Hampstead Vestry , which has agreed to contribute £ 3000 towards the expense , a similar sum having been given by the London County Council , and the remainder raised by subscription .

THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of the Asiatic Provincjs of Russia has sent Bro . Woolrych Perowne an invitation to arrange for a visit to Central Asia of a party of Englishmen in November next . The Minister of War has granted the use of the military railway from the Caspian to Samarkand free of the restrictions usuall y imposed on foreigners , and several gala functions have been arranged for the entertainment of the visitors at cities and towns en route .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg , and attended by Bro . Col . the Hon . Sir H . Byng , and Sir Arthur Bigge visited Cowes on Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of receiving an address of congratulation from the District Council on the completion of the 60 th year of her reign . The town was en fete during the day , and in the evening was beautifully illuminated . Her Majesty ' s reception was most enthusiastic , and after receiving the address , the Queen verbally expressed to the Chairman of the council the pleasure she had derived from her visit .

BRIGHTON COLLEGE celebrated its Jubilee on Tuesday , when Bro . Gerald Loder , M . P ., distributed the prizes to the successful pupils . In the course of a Latin speech by one of the bnys it was mentioned that among former pupils of the College were Sir H . Pendergast , V . C , Sir Herbert Stewart , Lieut .-Col . Hovenden , Capt . Gill , R . E ., Capt . Peyton , Lieut . Selous , of the Warren Hostings , Sir Edward Poynter , President of the Royal Academy , and Professor Holland .

THE Q UEEN has , through the Lord Mayor , presented the silver Diamond Jubilee Commemoration Medal to the City Swordbearer , Macebearer , and Marshal , in celebration of the Jubilee proceedings in the City , and has forwarded a stiver clasp to Bro . W . J . Soulsby , C . B ., the Lord Mayor ' s Secretary , to be worn with the Jubilee Medal which her Majesty had already been pleased to present him . A silver medal has likewise been given to the Lord Mayor's eldest son .

ACCORDING TO THE Registrar General s returns the death rate in London , under the influence of variable winds , a higher temperature , and electric disturbances , has been steadily increasing until last week it reached 20 per 1000 , which , however , is only slightly in excess of the average rate of the 33 great towns which are included in these weekly returns . For greater London the rate was 17 . 7 per 1000 ; forCroydon just over 10 ; and for Brighton 14 , 2 , being a slight increase over the previous week .

A CORRESPONDENT who has been staying in Somersetshire witnessed a rural tragedy while exploring a combe between Minehead and Porlock . A hawk had swooped down on a pigeon , had ruthlessly killed it , and was feasting on the remains when the traveller disturbed it and drove it off . On one leg of the victim he found a band of either ivory or bone , on which was inscribed "L 61 , 1895 . " Should the owner be wondering at the prolonged absence of the bird he will now know that its non-appearance is due to a cause beyond its own control . —Daily Telegraph .

SPEECH DAY at Christ S Hospital took place on Wednesday , when the Right Hon . the Lord Mayor distributed the prizes . It was announced that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales would lay the foundation-stone of the new school at Horsham on the 23 rd October , and that in a couple of years the boys would remove to the new premises . Grecians , the English oration containing , as a matter of course , many eloquent references to the Queen and her glorious reign . On the same day " Apposition " at St . Paul ' s School was held at Hammersmith , and in the course of his speech the High Master announced that , in compliance with the Queen ' s wishes , an additional week ' s holiday would be allowed . This and the statement that a swimming-bath would he erected caused great satisfaction among the boys .
