THE SHRIEVALTY . —The design for the badge and chain of office to be presented by the Ward of Aldgate to Mr . Alderman and Sheriff elect Pound , submitted by George Kenning and Son , Manufacturing Goldsmiths , has been selected by the Presentation Committee . ALL OUR READERS will be delighted to hear that Bro . J . L . Toole has completely recovered from his recent protracted illness , and will re-appear as Mr . Rimple in " Thoroughbred " on Tuesday next .

BRO . SIR HENRY * IRVING and Miss Terry will leave Southampton to-morrow ( Saturday ) on board the American liner New York to undertake with the Lyceu m Company a tour through the States , which has been organised by Messrs . Abbey and Grau , of New York . DAMAGE TO THE EXTENT of many thousand pounds and very serious injury to two firemen have resulted from a fire which broke out at the Criterion Restaurant , Piccadillycircus , early on Thursday morning last . The injured firemen are making fair progress towards recovery .

THE QUEEN held a Council at Osborne on Saturday last , at which the Marquis of Salisbury , the Earl of Coventry , and Bro . Lord Arthur Hill , M . P ., were present . Subsequently the Marquis of Salisbury had an audience of her Majesty , and Bro . Lord A . Hill presented the address from the House of Commors in reply to her Majesty ' s Speech from theThrone .

MASONIC EXCURSION . —Members of the New Southgate Lodge of Instruction paid a visit to Hertford on Wednesday , the 21 st inst .. when fine weather greatly enhanced the pleasure of the trip . The party left the Railway Hotel about mid-day , and were taken to Hertford in brakes . High tea was partaken of towards evening at the Railway Hotel , Hertford .

THE GREAT IRISH HORSE SHOW was opened at Ball's Bridge , Dublin , on Tuesday , the number of exhibits being 27 S , or 72 in excess of the highest number in any previous year . Moreover , the quality is declared of the best , and , as the weather promises to be fine , a record attendance is looked forward to . The Lord Lieutenant was amcng the visitors on the opening day , and went in state on VVednesday .

A SERIOUS ACCIDENT occurred at the Brechin terminus of the new direct line from Forfar on Tuesday morning . When the morning train was approaching the terminus the Westinghouse brake failed to act , and the train crashed through the buffer stops and the boundary wall into the street . Many of the passengers were more or less severely injured , but no one was killed .

THE PRINCESS BEATRICE visited Bembridge on Saturday last on board the Royal Yacht Alberta , and _ as captain of the Ladies' Golf Club there , presented the cup , of which her Royal Highness is the donor , to the winner , Miss Jessie Gordon . The Princess was afterwards presented with an ebony putter by the members of the club , and having lunched with Colonel and Mrs . Moreton , returned to Osborne .

THE CHINA CHALLENGE Cvv , which was this year won at Bisley by the Devon team , was tormally handed into the custody of Lord Clinton , Lord Lieutenant of the County , at the Exeter Guildhall on Tuesday , and his lordship requested the Mayor to have it placed in the Albert Memorial Museum until the next contest . Subsequently his lordship entertained the winning team and other guests at luncheon .

ACCORDING TO THE Registrar-General ' s Returns , the health of London has been steadily improving , and stands now at the rate of 17 per 1000 as compared with 21 ' 4 four weeks ago . It is only in respect of scarlet fever that the number of fatal cases is in excess of the corrected averege . The death-rate at Brighton has risen from 12 * 4 to in * G , while it stands at 1 t"S in Croydon . At Hull the rate is 35 * 6 per 1000 .

THE ROYAL DORSET YACHT CLUB ' races were held at Weymouth on Saturday , when H . R . H . the Princeof Wales ' s Britannia achieved another victory over the Ailsa in the race for over 60-tonners , but only on her time allowance by the narrow margin of 23 seconds . Mr . Donaldson's Isolde won the first prize in the match for 40-tonners , and the American Niagara that in the twenties , Lord Dudley ' s Inyoni being second .

YACHTING . —The Britannia has finished racing for the season , and has gone into harbour at Cowes to dismantle . She was ( lying 40 winning ( lags , including her successes in British waters this year . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales has presented Mr . Carter , her skipper , with a large silver jug in recognition of the able way in which he has handled the yacht . His Royal Highness has made gifts to other members of the crew .

MR . G . T . WHITE , Traffic Superintendent of the London and South-Western Railway , has been presented , through the Earl of Lonsdale , with a handsome gold pencil case in recognition of his courtesy and attention and the excellence of the arrangements he made for the landing of the Emperor William at the Southampton Docks , and his Majesty ' s subsequent departure for the north en route for Lowther Castle .

ON WEDNESDAY NEXT a Children ' s Regatta , which was held for the first time last year and proved a great success , will take place at Twickenham . The races are to be confined to boys and girls , and will include—for boys , double sculls , single sculls , pair-oared and four-oared races , single punting and dongola races , and a pair-oared race for choir boys ; and for girls pair-oared and four-oared races and single and double sculls .

THE FORTNIGHTLY SHOW of the Royal Horticultural Society was held in the Drill Hall , Buckingham-gate , on Tuesday . The exhibits , which included gladioli shown by Messrs . Kelway and Sons , of Langport , asters by Mr . James Veitch and Messrs . Dobbie and Son , of Rothesay , and dahlias by Messrs . H . Cannell and Son and Mr . Charles Turner , were of a high class , and tliere was likewise a very fine display of fruits . The visitors were more than usually numerous for the time of year .

ON SATURDAY LAST Bro . Dr . C . D . Hill-Drury , of Darlington , celebrated his silver wedding . Bro . Drury ' s marriage took place whilst he occupied the position of senior resident surgeon at Sunderland Hospital , his wife being a Sunderland lady , a Miss Ferry . For 10 or 11 years after his Sunderland appointment Bro . Dr . Drury practised in Norfolk , from whence he came to Darlington , where his professional skill and his many genial qualities have gained him a very large circle of friends , who will congratulate the worthy doctor on this auspicious event , and trust that he and his beloved partner in life may live to celebrate their golden and even diamond weddings . BRO . SIR HENRY IRVING visited the Richmond Theatre on Wednesday for the purpose of witnessing the performance of his son , Mr . Henry B . Irving as Claude Melnotte in the " Lady of Lyons . " THE CZAR OF RUSSIA has contributed 1000 francs to the subscription which is being raised for erecting a monument to the memory of Marshal Canrobert . The sum already obtained amounts to 50 , 000 francs .

THE CHAT MOSS ESTATE , near Manchester , comprising nearly 2600 acres , has been purchased by the Manchester Corporation of Sir Humphrey F . de Trafford for £ i 37 > 532 . The estate will be devoted to sewage works . THE SOUTH-WEST LONDON POLYTECHNIC , which has lately been erected in Manresa-road , Chelsea , at a cost of £ 40 , 000 , will , it is announced , be formally opened next month by the President—Earl Cadogan .

BRO . COL . THE HON . H . BYNG , Equerry to the Queen , who has been in attendance on the Shahzada since his arrival in England , has been succeeded by General Sir M . Biddulph , Groom-in-Waiting , who will attend his Highness until he leaves England for the Continent .

THE ANNUAL FETE of the League of the Cross , the great Roman Catholic total abstinence organisation , which was founded many years ago by the late Cardinal Manning , was celebrated at the Crystal Palace on Monday , when members were present to the number of some 25 , 000 . THE 47 TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE of the reptesentatives of the Wesleyan Reform Mission has been held at Wellingborough during the present week , under the presidency of Mr . T . Johnson . The delegates assembled from all parts of the country , and met with a most cordial reception .

THE FIFTH SESSION of the International Statistical Institute was opened at Berne on Monday , under the presidency of Sir Rawson W . Rawson . Those present included six English and two American members , while all the chief nations of the Continent were represented . A hearty welcome was addressed to the members by Federal Councillor Ruffy .

THE SHAHZADA , NASRULLA KHAN , with his suit of Afghans , will leave Victoria Station by special train for Dover about the hour of noon on i ' uesday next , arriving in Paris the same evening . His Highness , who paid a short visit to the Duke cf Cambridge on Wednesday , will winter in Candahar , whither he will be accompanied by Sir Acquin Martin .

THE 31 ST ANNUAL REPORT of the Registrar-General for Ireland , which was issued on Tuesday , shows that during the year 180 , 4 the number of marriages was 2 i , Go 2 , of births 105 , 354 , and of deaths 83 , 52 s , the marriage and death rates being slightly above and the birth rate slightly below the average of the last 10 years . The estimated population in the middle of the year is set down as 4 , 600 , 599 .

THE MARRIAGE of Viscount Grey de Wilton , only son of the Earl of Wilton , with the Hon . Mariota Thelusson , youngest daughter of Lord Kendlesham , was solemnised in Holy Trinity Church , Sloane-street , on VVednesday , the bride being given away by her father , while Bro . ADDRESSES OF WELCOME to Earl Cadogan as the new Lord Lieutenant of Ireland were presented to his Excellency on Monday afternoon by deputations from the Koyal College of Surgeons , the Royal College of Physicians , and the Royal Dublin Society . The ceremony took place in the Throne Room , the Lord Lieutenant being accompanied by the Countess Cadogan and attended by the members ot his staff and household .

A LARGE NUMBER of well-known athletes were on the platform at Euston station on Tuesday to witness the departure of the teams which were leaving for America by the steamship Aurania , which sailed from Liverpool the following day . J The teams consist of members of the L . A . C . who will take part in the match arranged with New York on the 2 ist prox ., and of Cambridge men , who will meet the picked representatives of Yale University on the 5 th October .

AN ATTEMPT was lately made on the life of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild , head of the great banking firm of that name in Paris . Fortunately the Biron was absent at his country seat at t ' rouville , but his private Secretary , M . Jodkowitz , who opened the registered letter containing the explosive intended to injure his principal , was very seriously damaged about the eyes , face , and hands , though we understand there are hopes that his sight will not be affected . The outrage is attributed to Anarchists .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg and her children , and Prince Atthur of Connaught , and attended by the ladies and gentlemen of her Court , left Osborne on Tuesday evening for Scotland . The Royal party crossed from East Cowes in the Roval Yacht Alberta to Gosport , where a special train was in waiting . They reached Balater on VVednesday afternoon and drove to Balmoral , where her Majesty will remain till about the middle ot November , when the Court will return to Windsor .

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE inspected the cavalry at Aldershot in the manoeuvres under Major-General Luck , Inspector-General of Cavalry . His Koyal Highness was accompanied by Bro . General Sir Reginald Gipps , Bro . General Sir Evelyn Wood , and Col . Viscount Downe .
