Masonic Notes .

Mutual satisfaction must have been felt by his Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and the Provincial Grand Lodgeof Sussex in connection with the meeting of the latter , at Brighton , on the 22 nd instant : by the

Duke of Connaught at finding he was able to preside on the occasion in his capacity of Provincial Grand Master , and assure the brethren—who , however , needed no such assurance—of his deep interest in their welfare :

and on the part of Provincial Grand Lodge at the opportunity his presence afforded them of welcoming his Royal Highness , and exhibiting towards him a further proof of their loyalty .

* * * Satisfaction must also have been felt at the formal announcement that his Royal Highness had graciously consented to preside as Chairman at the next Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and the

more particularly so as his Royal Highness was pleased to recognise that the claims of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at its approaching Jubilee Festival must not be lost sight of in consequence of his undertaking on behalf of the senior Charity . The

Duke , indeed , was careful to point out that a considerable amount of support had been alread y promised to the Benevolent Institution before the announcement was made that he would occupy the chair at the Girls ' Festival , and it is evident he realised that under these

circumstances the help he would receive from his province must be less than it would have been but for its pre-engagement . However , we most cordially echo the wish his Royal Highness expressed , nor have

we the slightest doubt , that Sussex will respond to his invitation and give him all the support in its power on the occasion of his Chairmanship . * * *

It will be a further source of satisfaction to all interested in the success of our Girls' School , but more especially to the pupils themselves , to know that her Royal Highness the Duchess of Connaught will

distribute the prizes to the successful children at the fete which will be held in connection with next year ' s anniversary Festival . The mere announcement that this honour is in store for the School will be of service to the Festival at which the Duke will preside .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland will be held at Newcastle-on-Tyne this day ( Friday ) , when we anticipate that the

proceedings will be of more than usual interest , and consequently that the attendance will be exceptionally large . We have every reason to believe that the reports as to the condition of Freemasonry in the province will be in all respects satisfactory .

The city of Salisbury will no doubt find itself aroused to a considerable degree of excitement to-morrow ( Saturday ) , when Bro . the Earlof Radnor , who in the spring of this year was appointed Provincial Grand

Master of Wiltshire , in succession to Bro . Lord Methuen , resigned , and since deceased , will be installed in office by H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Past Grand Master of England , Prov . Grand Master of Sussex , and District Grand Master of Bombay .

The event will be all the more attractive 10 our Wiltshire brethren from the fact that such a ceremony has not taken place in their midst for close on 40 years , the late Lord Methuen

having been inducted into the chair of the province by the late Bro . Sir W . Williams-Wynn , Bart , P ** ° * G . M . of North Wales and Shropshire , at Swindo n , on the 6 th September , 1853 . At that time there were but three lodges on the roll of the province , and the
