COLCHESTER . Angel Lodge ( No . 51 ) . — VISIT OF BRO . LORD BROOKE . —On Thursday , the 22 nd inst ., the annual festival of the above lodge took place , much eclat being given to the proceedings by the presence of the Prov . G . M ., Bro . Lord Brooke , M . P ., who was accompanied by the Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C . The principal

S . of Works , to represent the lodge on the Essex Provincial Charity Committee . The W . M ., on behalf of the lodge , thanked Lord Brooke and Bro . F . A . Philbrick for kindly attending the meeting . If either of those distinguished brethren had come they should have felt it a great distinction , but they were particularly fortunate in having both
with them that day , and their presence would make the day a memorable one , even in the annals of an old lodge like the Angel . Bro . Lord Brooke , who was very warmly received , thanked the brethren for their kind greeting . He had been particularly pleased to be able to come to the meeting , and was most gratified at the admirable way in which the ceremony had been conducted . He always had a gratefu . recollection of the way in which his own installation waj

arranged some nine years ago by the Colchester lodges , and trusted that they would always be as prosperous as they were at this time . Bro . Philbrick also expressed his thanks . Claiming , as he did , the honour of being a member of that venerable lodge , he felt that no thanks were due to him—he rather felt regret that he had been unable to come oftener . He had been delighted at the kind words that had fallen
from their Provincial Grand Master . No lodge could have had more encouraging words . At the same time , he felt that the lodge had worked so well that the praise had been fairly earned . The excellent way in which the ceremony had been done by a P . M . of the lodge showed that the traditions of Freemasonry were fully recognised within the lodge , and as long as that was so it must prosper .
The lodge was shortly afterwards closed , and 51 brethren afterwards dined at the Cups Hotel , a very splendid dinner being well served by the host and hostess , Mr . and Mrs . Brown . The usual Masonic toasts were duly honoured , that of "The P . G . M . and D . P . G . M . " being very heartily drunk . Both , in responding , again expressed their pleasure in seeing the lodge in so flourishing a condition , and wished
the new VV . M . a happy and prosperous year of office . Bro . Philbrick , alluding to the recent elections for the Masonic Schools , congratulated the province generally upon the success that had attended their efforts in the election of both their candidates . The Mayor of Colchester , Bro . L . J . Watts , was amongst those present at both meeting and banquet .
HAMPTON COURT . elections were then proceeded with and resulted as follows : Bros . B . J . Jacob , S . VV ., W . M . j Col . Gordon ( re-elected ) , Treas . j and Gilbert ( re-elected ) , Tyler . On the motion of Bro . Pearse , Sec , the thanks of the lodge were accorded the W . M . for his kind and able services during the past year , and the usual Past Master ' s jewel was voted to him , a compliment for which Bro . E . Swain , W . M ., returned
thanks in appropriate terms . The Secretary was desired to convey to Bro . Evans , who was initiated , passed , and raised in the lodge , the congratulations of the members at his recent election to the important office of Lord Mayor of the City of London . The Secretary , Bro . Pearse , P . P . G . Reg ., then read the following brief summary of the history of the lodge during the past 21 years .
The petition for the lodge towards the end of 1 S 6 9 was signed by Bros . Col . Burdett , George Kenning , Kenyon , R . W . Little , H . G . Buss , Chamberlain , Palmer , Still , Walters , and Binckes . The warrant was dated November in that year . The consecration took place under peculiar circumstances , it being fixed for the same time and place as the inauguration of the Province of Middlesex , which
occurred on the 22 nd January , 1 S 70 , at the Clarence Hotel , Teddington , in the presence of a large number of brethren . The Consecrating Officers were Bros . Hervey , G . Sec . J Fenn , P . A . G . D . C j Brett , A . G . P . ( who were afterwards elected honorary members ); De Crespigny , and Little . Amongst those present besides the founders were the following distinguished brethren : Bros . Davison , P . P . G . R .

W . j Little , Treas . j Hubbard , Sec . j Palmer , S . D . ; Still , J . D . j Buss ,
D . C . j Edwards , I . G . j and Gilbert , Tyler . The following brethren presented the lodge with articles of furniture : Bro . Burdett , the gavels j Bro . Kenyon , the chairs j Bro . Rosenthal , the Deacons' wands j Bro . Kentish , the ballot-box andkneeling-stoolj and Bro . Shaboe , the Charity box . The lodge moved to its present habitation in October , 1 S 70 . The W . M . ' s have been Bros . Burdett , Little , Kenyon , Still ,
Phythian , Keily , Pearse , Berrie , Southwell , Shaboe , Sindall , Gordon , Kentish , Sanders , Maybury , Maple , Roberts , Spratling , Tarr , Wilson , Tattersall , and Swain . Amongst the distinguished brethren who have been ( and some still are ) members of the lodge are the following : Bros . Sir F . Burdett , P . G . M . Middx . j R . W . Stewart , first D . P . G . M . Middx . ; Little , D . P . G . M . Middx . ; Buss ,
P . S . G . W . and P . G . Treas . Middx . ; Baxter , P . G . Stwd . England ; Glaisher , F . R . S ., Rosenthal , and Evans , Lord Mayor elect . Several letters expressing regret for nonattendance were announced , and the lodge was closed . A choice banquet was then served , which fully maintained the reputation of the worthy host , Bro . Sadler , and the usual toasts were afterwards honoured .
Bro . Thos . Fenn , President Board of General Purposes , replying for "The Grand Officers , " said there was perhaps no duty which devolved upon a Grand Officer which gave him greater pleasure than to be present at the consecration of a new lodge , and to watch year after year its growth and progress , but it was reserved to very few Grand Officers to see that lodge attain its majority , and to be able to
say they were present as a Grand Officer both at its birth and at the -attainment of its majority . He was thankful that he had lived to enjoy that pleasure . It was now more than 27 years since he was first appointed a Grand Officer , and he recollected well when he assisted the late Bro . Hervey to consecrate that lodge , and at the
same time to inaugurate the Provincial Grand Lodge of Middlesex . He did not think there were any other Grand Officers living except himself and Bro . Brett who had occupied the Wardens' chairs at the inauguration of a new province , and therefore he was particularly fortunate to be in an exceptional position and also to attend that lodge . Although he had not been a frequent visitor , he had watched

Phythian , Keily , Pearse , Berrie , Southwell , Shaboe , Sindall , Gordon , Kentish , Sanders , Maybury , Maple , Roberts , Spratling , Tarr , Wilson , Tattersall , and Swain . Middx . ; Little , D . P . G . M . Middx . ; Buss ,
