the progress of the Burdett Lodge , and had heard from time to time the names of the members , and from such facts he gathered that there were many who had made their mark in Masonry . That led him to the conclusion that the lodge had listened to the few words which he well recollected fell from Bro . Hervey , exhorting the founders to be particular in the selection of their members . He
congratulated them on the success the lodge had attained , and thanked them very much on the part of the Grand Officers for the compliment paid them , and for the very kind reception given him as their representative . The Worshipful Master next gave "The Provincial Grand Master , Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past . " He said
that toast reminded them that their Provincial Grand Master was a founder and the first Master of the lodge , and that he was always present when possible . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master was enjoying himself in Devonshire , but there were many representatives of the Provincial Grand Officers present . Bro . W . H . Lee , P . P . G . D ., said that in rising to the call
of the W . M . he must first express his extreme regret that neither the Prov . Grand Master , the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , or the Prov . Grand Secretary were able to be present to respond to that important toast on that auspicious occasion , but on their behalf , and on behalf of the other Prov . Grand Officers , he returned hearty , sincere , and cordial thanks for the kind reception given it . They were
assembled that day on a very important occasion , and it gave him , as he had no doubt it gave all present , a great deal of pleasure to listen to that interesting paper read by the Secretary , one of the most gratifying features of which was the long roll of distinguished Past Masters who had presided over the lodge during the past 21 years . Those were the men who had made the Burdett Lodge , those were
the brethren who had sustained its reputation and brought it to the proud position it now occupied amongst the lodges of the province . * On behalf of the Prov . Grand Officers he returned thanks for the way they had been received , and wished the lodge a long continuance in the future of that prosperity it had so deservedly enjoyed in the past . Bro . W . G . Kentish , P . M .. then proposed "TheW . M ., "
and expressed his regret and sympathy for their I . P . M ., whose absence had necessitated his undertaking the duty of giving the toast . Their W . M ., Bro . Swain , had ably presided over them during the present year , and that was probably the last time he would preside as their VV . M . Bro . Swain had given them the greatest satisfaction , and no Master had given more satisfaction , and they would
therefore drink the toast with the greatest enthusiasm . Bro . E . Swain , W . M ., said he responded with a great deal of regret in one sense , because that was the last time he should have the opportunity of responding to it . He had become so accustomed to fill the chair , supported by the brethren of the lodge , that it seemed a matter of course . He would only say in reference to the kind words
of Bro . Kentish , and to which they had all so kindly assented , that he had endeavoured to the best of his ability to carry out those undertakings he gave when he accepted the office of W . M . He could not have succeeded but for the cooperation of the officers and the assistance of the Past Masters . Every asssistance had been rendered him on all occasions , and his task made easy . _ He regretted there had not been more work , but he considered it an honour to raise Bro .
Burdett , the son of their esteemed Prov . Grand Master . He was fortunate in being the W . M . of the lodge at its majority , and was proud to occupy the chair on the present occasion . It was nine years ago since he was initiated in that lodge , and it was a curious coincidence that the brother who proposed the toast that evening initiated him into Freemasonry . His heart was full , but as time was short he would only thank them for all their kindness to him since he had been a member .
Bro . T . Fenn , President Board of Ceneral Purposes , then proposed "Success to the Burdett Lodge , " and said that , although he was quite unprepared for the duty , perhaps it was more appropriate that he should be called upon , he having been one of the Grand Officers present at the consecration . If they would allow him he would alter the words of the toast to " continued " prosperity to the lodge ,
for he considered it was never more prosperous than on the present occasion . In drinking that toast they should not forget some of the roll of Past Masters who contributed to its success and guided it through its early days . He was glad to see many Past Masters present , which gave eclat to the occasion , and who had assisted greatly in the prosperity of the lodge . Bro . Pearse , P . M ., had rendered great
assistance , and knowing the ability of Bro . Kentish , P . M ., as an active member of the Emulation Lodge of Improvement , and his perfect knowledge of the work , he was sure the example set by him must have been worth following . As that lodge had attained great prosperity in the past , so let them hope it would continue in the future .
"Our Host , Bro . C . Sadler , " having been cordially honoured , "The Visitors" was given in graceful and appropriate terms by Bro . J . D . E . Tarr , P . M ., P . P . G . D . Bro . G . R . Langley , VV . M . 23 S 1 , returned thanks for the kind reception given the visitors , and expressed the gratification it had afforded them to be present at the 21 st anniversary . He trusted the continued success of
the lodge would be greater than that it had attained in the past , and that the goodfellowship which had obtained in it during the few years he had known it would exist for all time . He thanked his esteemed friend , Bro . 'farr , for enabling him to be present , for they had worked together some few years in Masonry in a lodge in the City , and of which that brother was now the VV . M .
The proceedings , which terminated with the Tyler ' s toast , were enlivened by a selection of music , in which Bros . W . Sycklemore , W . H . Wheeler , J . E . Harling , W . J . Spratling , and others assisted .
KINGSTON-ON-THAMES . Dobie Lodge ( No . 8 S 9 ) . —On Wednesday , the 21 st inst ., the members of this lodge were summoned to attend after the summer vacation , and a score in number assembled . Bio . F . J . Hayward , W . M ., was supported
by most of his officers , and the working was watched by Bro . Clark , 1950 , a visitor . This consisted only of passing Bro . Gaze to the Degree of F . C , the candidate for the Third Degree being unavoidably absent . After the lodge was closed the brethren spent the evening around the social board .

Dorman , with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel as a mark of their recognition of the
manner m which he had carried out the duties of his office during the past year , and Bro . T . P . Dorman suitably acknowledged the presentation . The lodge having been duly closed , the members sat down to a banquet , which was set out in the large room of the hall , which is lighted by electricity . The catering was entrusted to Bro . VV . F . Tipler , and every satisfaction was
given in that respect . The newly-elected VV . M ., Bro . A . Jones , occupied the chair , and the company numbered about So . The repast over , the Worshipful Master proposed " The Queen and Craft " and " The M . W . the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . " "The Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom j the Deputy Grand Masterthe Earl
, of Mount Edgcumbe j and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was also submitted by the President , who in the course of his remarks spoke highly of Bro . the Rev . Canon Sanders , P . M ., P . G . C England , and Bro . Butler Wilkins , who , he said , fully deserved the confidence reposed in them for the eminent services they had rendered to Masonry in the province .
Bro . Butler Wilkins , in the absence of Bro . the Rev . Canon Sanders , replied to the toast . He spoke of the spirit evinced and the interest shown in the Eleanor Cross Lodge and the province generally , and congratulated Bro . A . Jones on his accession to oflice . He also expressed the hope that Bro . Jones would find the duties pleasant to himself , and that the lodge might increase and prosper during
the time he presided over it . Bro . Beeby Thompson proposed "The P . G . M ., the Earl of Euston j the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Butler Wilkins , P . G . Std . Br . England j and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and made a few most appropriate remarks , in the course of which he spoke in high terms * of praise of the manner in which the Provincial
Grand Master _ carried out the important and responsible duties of his high office . Bro . Butler Wilkins replied to the toast , and expressed his regret that Lord Euston was unable to be with them that evening , as he felt sure his lordship would have been pleased to see so large a gathering of Masons , and also to hear of the increasing prosperity of Masons in the town .
Bro . H . Hodges submitted the toast of " The Worshipful Master of the Eleanor Cross Lodge , Bro . Alfred Jones , P . P . G . Reg . " He remarked that all present , doubtless , lelt proud to see Bro . Jones in the position in which he had been installed that evening . He was well worthy to occupy the chair , as he had taken a very great interest in promoting the welfare and success of the Eleanor Cross Lodge , and
he was glad that he had now reached the highest possible position in the lodge . He was pleased to see so many brethren present , several of whom were from a distance , to congratulate him on his accession to office , as it showed the confidence and respect they had for the VVorshipful Master . All who had watched his career as a Mason must admit that whatever office he had been called upon to fill
he had carried out the duties appertaining thereto not only with credit to himself , but also to the lodge . Bro . Hodges said he personally congratulated Bro . Jones on his appointment as Worshipful Master of that lodge , which was one of the principal lodges in the province , and wished him a happy and prosperous year of office . fhe Worshipful Master , on rising to respond to the toast ,
met with a most hearty reception . He thanked the members for the manner in which they had received the toast , and remarked that he was anxious to do his best in the office to which he had been appointed , so as to continue to merit the confidence reposed in him . He admitted he was proud and happy to occupy the position in which he had been placed , and he was glad tosce so many brethren present with whom he had laboured in Masonry for so many years

and also others from a distance . He was conscious of the great responsibility cast upon one who occupied the position of W . M . of such a lodge as the Eleanor Cross , and as far as he was concerned , no efforts should be wanting on his part to render the lodge as successful during his year of office as it had been in the past , and also as serviceable to Masonry . He had been a Mason for 12 years , and fully
appreciated the grand and ennobling principles of the Brotherhood , and he should do his best to further promote them for the general good of the body . He should emulate those who had gone before him in endeavouring to maintain the honour and dignity of the office to which he had that evening been appointed . The Eleanor Cross Lodge was worthy of comparison with other lodges in the province , as
it had a good roll of members and a substantial balance in hand , and he hoped his year of office might be a happy and a successful one . "The Installing Officer" was given by Bro . Butler Wilkins , who spoke highly of the manner Bro . G . Butcher had carried out the important duties entrusted to him that evening .
Bro . G . Butcher , in the course of his reply , spoke of the pleasure it gave him to install Bro . T . P . Dorman last year and Bro . A . Jones this year , and , with respect to the latter brother , he said he felt certain he would fully maintain the honour and credit of the Eleanor Cross Lodgfe , and he was one from whom they mig-ht expect great things during his year of office .
Bro . T . P . Dorman submitted the toast of " The Masonic Charities . " He spoke of the value of the Charities , which were formed in the latter part of the last century , and said they had done good work in the past , and he tioped they would do even a greater work in the future . He hoped that lodge and the brethren generally would do what they could to assist the Charities , as they were of great value to the
body , and most worthy of all the support which could be given them . Bro . G . Ellard , who had been appointed with Bro . Buckle to superintend the different votes in the province , replied to the toast . He enumerated the number of votes the province had in respect of the different Charities , and said the work of the province was deeply appreciated by those who had
the management of the different Charities . They had done well in the past , and he hoped they would be able to do even more in the future . Bro . H . Manfield proposed " The Past Masters of the Lodge , " and spoke in terms of praise of the manner in which Bro . T , P . Dorman , who has now become a Past Master , had carried out the duties of Worshipful Master
during the past year . Some of his subsequent remarks were of a somewhat humorous character . Bro . T . P . he was glad that he had now reached the highest possible position in the lodge .
Provincial Meetings.
and also others from a distance .
