The lodge having been opened , the ceremony of installing the new VV . M . was performed in a very impressive manner by Bro . E . G . Feild , I . P . M . —so impressive in fact , that the Prov . Grand Master complimented him in the highest terms as to the working of the lodge . He also spoke in high terms of the manner in which the VV . M . did his duty as presiding over the lodge and also at the banquet . He

said he was also gratified at being present , and spoke in feeling terms of the brotherly love and good feeling which reigned in the lodge . He was delighted with the whole arrangements that had been made for the comfort of the brethren , and expressed his opinion that the arrangements at the banquet , the decorations , and the menu were certainly all that could possibly be desired . He also expressed great

satisfaction at the arrangements for Masonic purposes which had been carried out since he visited the lodge 12 months ago . Bro . Dr . Ralph Gooding , P . M . and Treas . 1 , P . G . D ., also expressed his delight at the satisfactory working of the lodge , and he congratulated the Installing Master and the new W . M . for the way in which they had carried out

their duties . He had been to many lodges , but he never saw work better done than on that occasion . It afforded him the greatest possible pleasure to be present at the installation of his old and much esteemed friend , Bro . Markham , who , he was sure , would carry out his duties in the most satisfactory manner . After the transaction of other business , the lodge was

closed . At a later period of the evening , a splendid banquet was laid out in the large Market Hall , which was decorated for the occasion in a vey tasteful manner . Grace having been sung by Bro . Herbert Schartau ' s pari singers , to music by Dr . John Smith , an excellent banquet was done ample justice to by all who were present , when the usual toasts were proposed and duly honoured .

Ol'EKATIC Co . NCKKr -IT PLYMOUTH . A grand operatic concert was given in the Plymouth Guildhall on the 14 th instant in aid of the Devon Masonic Educational Fund . The hall was filled in every part , and the concert was a thorough success in every respect , Masonic Plymouth being well pleased

with the result . 'The arrangements , which were all excellent , had been carried out by a Committee of Worship ; ul Masters of the lodges ol the Three 'Towns , with Bro . Godfrey Evans , W . AI . 1550 , as Chairman , assisted by several Past Masters and other brethren who acted as Stewards . The concert was held under the banner eif Prudence Lodge , No . 1550 , and a special

dispensation had been granted by the Prov . Grand Master for brethren to wear their regalia on the occasion . In connection with the arrangements , special mention should be made of the valuable services of Bros . John B . Gover and VV . H . Dillion , Hon . Secretaries ot the conceit . Supported by such a miuierousaiid influential body as tbe I'Veemascms of tine Three 'Towns , it was

felt from the first that the concert was bound to be a success , and the results realised every expectation . The brethren put in an appearance in great numbers , their regalia , adding to the effect of the lout ensemble , being evidently regarded by those outside the mystic Craft as a great novelty . Most of the re-served seats were taken by brethren and their friends . The object of the Devon Masonic Educational Fund

is to educate and clothe the children of deceased brethren , and it is gratifying ( o know that as a result of the concert the tund will be greatly benefited . The attendance was so large that many people had to be accommodated in the orchestra . The services of all who took part in the concert were freely given . The musical arrangements were in the hands of Bro . W . Willoughby , Mus . Bac . Oxon ., and great credit is

due to him for the excellently arranged programme which was provided , and for the success of the concert generally . The first part of the programme consisted of songs , quartets , and madrigals from Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan ' s operas , special permission to sing these having been obtained from Mr . R . D'O yley Carte , The second part comprised selections from the grand

operas . The vocalists were : Soprano , Mrs . Willoughby ; contralto , Miss Ada Bowden ; tenors , Bro . C . F . Hocking and Mr . R . Wri ght ; baritone , Bro . R . White ; basso , Mr . A . E . Brown ; solo violin , Bro . H . R . Ball , L . R . A . M . ; grand organ , Bro . J . Hele , Mus . Bac , P . P . G . O . Cornwall ; and pianoforte , Miss Lilian E .

Blight . Bro . VV . Willoughby was the conductor , and there was a choir and orchestra of over 100 performers . The orchestra had been made to look very pretty by ferns , plants , and palms , kindly supplied by Bro . J . _ W . Penwarn , S . D . 1550 . The concert opened with an overture from the

" Bohemian Girl , " in which the power of the organ and the abilities of the orchestra were full y brought out . Then followed soineol the prettiest numbers from the most popular operas . The madrigal " Brightl y dawns our wedding day , " from "The Mikado , " was admirably rendered , and the quartette " The world is but a broken toy" (" Princess Ida" ) , by Mrs .

Willoughby , Miss Bowden , Mr . R . Wright , and Mr . A . E . Brown , was received with great favour . Bro . R . White scored in his first attempt . The song and chorus , " When Britons really ruled the waves . " from " Iolanthe , " was most cordially encored , Bro . White ' s fine baritone being heard to advantage . He responded with another verse . Bro . C . F . Hocking charmed the

audience with his splendid tenor voice of line range and purity . As a result of his song , " Take a pair of sparkling eyes" ( " Gondoliers ") , he also was compelled to repeat the effort . The sextet and chorus from " Patience , " " 1 hear the soft note , " was tunefull y sung , and Miss Bowden , an excellent contralto , gave a sympathetic rendering of the recitation and ballad ,

" My Lord , a suppliant , " from " Iolanthe . " Both the selections from the " Pirates of Penzance" were beautifully given , Bro . R . White doing full justice to the solo , " With cat-like tread , " and Mrs . Willoughby receiving ample tokens of appreciation for her singing of " Poor wandering one . " Bro . C . 1 " . Hocking was quite as successful in the ballad from " La Ciirale" as

in his former effort , and , in response to an undeniable encore , he gave "Let me like a soldier fall , " from " Marit . uia . " 'The quait-rte " Strange adventure " ( " Yeomen ol the Guard" ) , by Mrs . Willoughby , Miss lieowden , Mr . L . Wri ght , and Mr . A . E . Brown , was one of the most taking items on the programme , and Bro . R . White ' s "Ho ! Jolly Jeiikin" 1 " Ivanhoe " , with

chorus , was another enjoyable effort , and the first part of a thoroughly delightful programme was concluded with the madrigal from "limidigore , " "When the buds are blossoming . " The second part went quite as well as the first . Opening with " Crown Diamonds " ( Auber ) , the audience were next gratified with the chorus and tenor

cavatina from D ,. 'ii ;/ etti ' s " Lucia di Lammermoor , " "Hail to the happy bridal day , " in which Mr . R . Wright distinguished himsell . Alondelssohn ' s vintage song , " Lurelly , " was also a pretty item , and Mr . A . E . Brown received a hearty encore for the song from " Maritana , " " Now , my courage . " He responded with " The Diver , " which was equally well rendered . In no

elfort did the chorus sing lu butter advantage than in the imp essive " Angelus" trum " Maritana . " " Mr . R . Wright completely carried toe audience with him in his singing of the ballad ' Happy with winged feet " ( " Ivanliue" ) , and in response tua recall gave" There is a flower that bloomtth . " The grand selection from " Gounod ' s Faust , " which embraced the church « . <«»

soldiers' chorus , with duet and final trio , was very finel y given by Mrs . Willoughb y as Marguerite , Mr . R . Wright as Faust , and Mr . A . E . Brown as Mephistopheles , ami was received with great applause . The last item was Wagner ' s 'Hail bright abode " ( "Tanrilia ( iser " J , which the chui ' r renelered with

excellent precision . The singing of the Nationl Anthem brought a most enjoyable concert to a close , and there is no doubt that the generous support given to it will enable the promoters to hand over a substantial sum to a very deserving Masonic Institution .

The most important event that has happened in connection with Arch Masonry in the West of Scotland for a long time past w ., s happily celebrated on the 19 th inst . Consequent on the retirement , after 14 years ' reign of M . E . Comp . W . J . Euston , Grand

Superintendent over this , the most important of the provinces in our jurisdiction , a successor had to be elected , and at the unanimous request of the daughter chapters , the Supreme Dudy was pleased to appoint in his room one ol the most energetic and highly respected members on her roll , Comp . . VI . ij or F . W . Allan , 32 ' , who has served in the subordin Ue , as well as hi gher offices , for

many terms , 111 both provinciil , and Grand Lodge and Chapter , with unvarying application and acceptability . Great preparations were made in order that the auspicious occasion might be a signal success , and the efforts were redoubled when it iv . is announced that our new M . E . Grand ' / ,., Comp . the lit . Hon . Lord Saltoun , had offered to perform the installation ceremony .
