S ATURDAY . DECEMBER 31 , 1898 .
« . We gladly take this opportunity of wishing our readers a happy and prosperous New Year . The year which is about to expire has been , Masonically , a memorable one , in a certain respect the most
memorable in the annals of the Craft . The country , too , has fared well , notwithstanding there have been wars and rumours of wars , which have , necessarily , had a baneful influence upon our trade and commerce . But , on the whole , Fortune has favoured us , and though , as
Masons , we dare not look for a repetition in 18 99 of the splendid work that has been achieved in 18 9 8 , we are justified in hoping that the latter will exercise a beneficial influence on the former in continuing the success which it has been our privilege to enjoy during the last 12 months .
* * # We have great pleasure in announcing that His Royal Hig hness the M . W . G . Master has appointed Bro . the Rig ht Honourable the Earl of Warwick , Prov . G . Master of Essex , Dep . G . Master of England , in succession to Bro . Earl Amherst , who now fills the oflice of Pro G . Master , made vacant by the

lamented death of the Earl ol Lathom . Lord Warwick , who has presided over the Freemasons of Essex for the last 16 years , enjoys a well-deserved popularity among the lodges and brethren in that Province . He has done good service to our
Institutions by occupying the chair at the Festivals held on behalf of two of them , namely , at the 9 6 th Girls ' School Festival in May , 1884 , and at the 95 th Boys ' School , at Brighton , in June , 1893 , and on both occasions his Province supported him most loyally . Thus the cordial relations which have for so long existed
between Essex and its ruler augur well for the success of his lordship in the more exalted position of Dep . G . Master of England , and we heartily congratulate the Province on the honour conferred upon it through his lordship ' s appointment . We publish elsewhere a portrait of the new Dep . G . Master , with a few of the more important particulars of his Masonic career .
* V V The usual New Year's entertainment to the inmates of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon will take place on Wednesday , the 4 th prox ., while the first meeting of the Board of Stewards for
the approaching Festival in its behalf will be held at Freemasons' Hall on the following day . As regards the Festival , the latest news we have of the progress made by Bro . Terry , the Secretary of the Institution , in constituting his Board of Stewards , is very
encouraging , and we are not without hope that when the meeting does take place Bro . Terry may be in a position to announce that he has succeeded in enlisting the support of almost as many ladies and brethren as Stewards as in 1897 , when H . R . H . the Duke of
Connaught took the chair . We have further been informed that among those who have promised their help a'e sundry brethren of influence , who may induce others to back them up as contributors if they cannot co-operate with them as Stewards . To this extent the auspices appear favourable .
* » * But we must not lose sight of the fact that , even if the present conditions were still more favourable than we have described them , the task of making up for the shortcomings of the year 18 9 8 , and at the same time of
raising the required ways and means for the efficient maintenance of the Institution during the coming year , is likely to prove an exceptionally serious one . It is hard work raising £ 16 , at any time , but it will be harder still in the year that is coming , when there
has been such a serious drain upon all the sources of supply as the subsciption of £ 160 , 000 in a single year must be held to imply . However , we are sanguine , without being over-sanguine ; and we are satisfied the Stewards will do their utmost to ensure a successful result to their labours .
The first meeting in the new year of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Friday , the 6 th prox ., when , as soon as the Report of the Audit Committee has been pre
sented and considered , the W . M ., Bro . C . Purdon Clarke , C . I . E ., will offer a tribute of respect to the memory of Bro . Professor T . Hayter Lewis , a P . M . of the lodge , who died at a ripe age on the ioth inst . The Secretary—Bro . G . W . Speth , P . A . G . D . C—will read a report on the meeting of the Antwerp lodges .
which he attended on behalf of the lodge , in response to an invitation which had been received from a deputation from those lodges at the October meeting . Bro . Speth will subsequently read a paper on " The English Lodge , No . 204 , Bordeaux , " after which the brethren will dine together at the Holborn Restaurant .
* * . * To judge from the report of the Audit Committee , the lodge would appear to be in a satisfactory condition . On the general account there is a balance at bank and in hand oi £ 33 $ ; on the bdge account , one of £ 16 : while the statement of assets and
liabilities shows a small balance in favour of the former , after estimating the amounts outstanding and due to the lodge at only half their nominal value ; the sets of transactions , reprints , facsimiles , & c , with the library and museum , not being included in the said statement .
* » We have received Volume XL , Part III ., of "Ars Quatuor Coronatorum , " being the Transactions of the lodge during the current year , together with the
St . John ' s Card for the 27 th instant ( St . John the Evangelist ' s Day ) . But the demands upon our time are particularly heavy just now , and we are therefore under the necessity of deferring our customary review of their contents for just a little while .

We have much pleasure in acknowledging receipt of a copy of " Northumbrian Masonry and the Development of the Craft in England , " by Bro . John Strachan , Q . C , Grand Registrar of England , P . Prov . G . W . and P . Prov . G . Sec . Northumberland . It is
dedicated , by permission , to H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., M . W . Grand Master , and from the very hurried glance we have had an opportunity of giving , we feel certain that the work will prove both
interesting and a valuable addition to our steadily-increasing store of works on Masonic history . We regret that for the reasons mentioned in another Note , we are under the necessity of postponing for a short time our review of Bro . Strachan's work .
* * We have received copy of a circular letter addressed to the Master , Wardens , and brethren of lodges , in which their attention is called to the proposed establishment of a " Masonic Lifeboat Saturday Fund , " and contributions thereto invited . As our readers are
aware , the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , which does so vast an amount of good year after year in saving the lives of those who " go down to the sea in ships , " has not duly received a generous amount of support from Masons , as from the general body of their countrymen , but it has likewise been the
recipient of grants made or funds raised for its special support . As far back as the year 18 71 Grand-Lodge voted a small sum of £ 50 towards the " Masonic Lifeboat Fund " that was being organised . In 18 77 , by way of commemorating the return of H . R . H . the
Prince of Wales , M . W . G . Master , from India , it-made a grant of £ 4000 to the R . N . Lifeboat Institution for the purpose of building and endowing two lifeboats . In 1884 it voted 100 guineas for the families of two of the crew of one of these lifeboats , who lost their lives in the performance of their duty .
* * » These facts show that the Lifeboat Institution is held in high estimation for the almost infinite good . it does by Masons as well as by Englishmen generally ; and we see no reason why this " Lifeboat Saturday Fund , " which is being so strenuously advocated by
Bros . Alderman Farncombe , P . Prov . G . Warden Sussex ; A . Deedes , P . P . G . W . Bristol , and others , should not meet with a generous amount of support from the brethren generally , more especially as the receipts in 1897 fell short to the extent of over £ 8 , 000
of those of the previous year . The money thus raised from the brethren will be specially useful for the pur . pose of making grants to widows and children of life , boat men who lose their lives when on service , grants to men who are injured , payments to crews for services rendered , and pensions .
» * * We repeat the Lifeboat Saturday Fund is one that well deserves the support of brethren , and we shall have much pleasure in doing everything in our power
to promote its success . In the meantime contribu . tions will be thankfully received by the Secretary , Mr , A . P . Smith , 3 , Adelphi-terrace , Strand , W . C , or by any of the brethren who are helping to promote the success of the fund .
* « * A quarterly communication of the G .. Lodge or Pennsylvania was held at the Masonic Hall , Philadelphia , on Wednesday , the 7 th inst ., under the presidency of Bro . William J . Kelly , G . M ., when , in the course of the proceedings , Bro . Henry W . Williams was unanimously elected G . Master for the ensuing year .
Opportunity was also taken to present Bro . Thomas R . Patton , who has held the office of Grand Treasurer for 25 years , and is the founder of the Thomas R . Patton Memorial Charity Fund , with an address of congratulation in recognition of his services , and Bro ; Patton most gracefully acknowledged the high compliment thus paid him by his Pennsylvania brethren .
* * * From the particulars mentioned by Bro . the Hon , Mr . Justice W . R . Burkitt in the address he delivered on the occasion of his installation as Dist . G . Mark Master of Bengal , at the half-yearly communication of tbe Dist . G . Mark Lodge , at Naina Talon the 30 th
, of August , it appears that the District now comprises 16 lodges in full working order , together with two others , which though for the present dormant , it is hoped may be resuscitated ; the number of subscribing members on the rolls being 388 . In additionthere
, are seven Royal Ark Mariner lodges in full working , and one in abeyance , the number of subscribing members being 128 . All these lodge-, both Mark and Ark , have sent in their returns , while the financial condition of the Dist . G . Lodge is declared to be sound .
* * * Our attention has been called to an error in our review of " Freemasonry in 18 9 8 , " which we hasten to correct . Under the head of " Chivalric and Hi gh Grade Masonry" we said , " We cannot trace that any new Rose Croix chapters have been placed on the roll
of the Council . " We have been since informed that three such chapters were warranted during the year , namely , the St . Pancras , No . 140 , which was warranted on the 2 ist February ; the Pengwerne , No , 141 , Shrewsbury , on the 13 th April ; and the St . John the Baptist , No . 141 , Aylesbury , on the 2 nd August .
