As that stern convoy led him to meet his death that clay ; As he , Andreas Hofer , passed on undaunted on his way , Ancl free in fetters stood so statel y on that bastion grim and grey That man from Tyrol ' s land .
There should he kneel , they said , but he replied , " Not I . ' As now I stand upright , so erect will I die ! Just as I stood in stubborn fi ght in days gone by ! Long live my good Emperor Francis , my last cry , And with him my land Tyrol !" A grenadier then took the bandage—they tell usall unmanned
, As Andreas prayed a last short prayer on this sublunary land . " Mark well , " he cried aloud , " steady , comrades , be your hand , Ancl hit me well . Fire 1 Ah , you clumsy band—Farewell my land Tyrol . "
