John Mott TheaKle , at 198 , Fleet Street , near Chancery Lane . EXTRACT FROM PEPYS' DIARY . Monday , April 6 th , 1662 . Put on my new coat , with the silver buttons ( the first time I have worn it ) , and my short cloak over that , long ones being oat of fashion ; went down ye Strand , from my house in Axe Yard , to Brother John Mott Thearle ' s , the Masonic Jeweller and Watchmaker , and Gold and Silversmith , of 198 , Fleet Street , near unto Chancery Lane ; bought me a Royal Arch Jewel at 25 s ., which delighteth me much , also a Silver Watch for 50 s ., and a good Gold Albert for 60 s . Saw some Masonic Pins for the Scarf , pierced out in ye Solid Gold , at 20 s . each , with ye emblem of the R . A ., P . M ., or Square and Compass thereon ; also Coral Bar Pins , now so much in fashion , at 10 s . and 15 s . each , beside such a choice selection of other Pins , as made my mouth water ,-and such an assortment of Masonic ^ Jewels and Brooches , and Rings and Watches , as made my heart go pit-a-pat . Bought a pure Gold " Flower Brooch " for 20 s ., exquisitely natural , for my wife ; also a Gold Watch for £ 5 , and a Gold Chain for £ 3 , whereat my wife rejoiced exceedingly . Walked into ye Temple , and met Sir Jacob Kole ; saw in his shirt a set of John Mott Thearle ' s 15 s . Gold Studs , and admired them much . Met a man who owed me six pieces , which he paid me , and which made my heart go pit-a-pat , and my mouth water . Goodness be praised , ' tis ye second time my mouth hath watered to-day ; have , remarked that I am always very lucky after buying anything at that old house of Bro . John Mott Thearle ' s . My good wife agreeth with me in this , seeing , as she quaintly observeth , that we have been most fortunate ever since I bought her 15 s . Wedding Ring there . Cannot do better than recommend Brethren to copy ye address in their pocket-books : Bro . John Mott Thearle , 198 , Fleet Street , near unto Chancery Lane .
