MONMOUTHSHIRE .
PONTYPOOL . Kennard Lodge ( No . 1 , 258 ) . On Monday , the 20 th ult ., this lodge which Avas established , under favourable circumstances , twelve months ago , held its anniversary . The installation of Bro . Henry Martyn Kennard , of Crumlin Hall ( after Avhom the lodge has been named ) ns AV . M ., Avas the occasion which attracted an imposing assemblage
of the Craft from all points of the compass , every lodge in Monmouthshire , and several iu the neighbouring provinces , being Avell represented . There were not fewer than eighty brethren present , all of whom , we believe , were also at the banquet . The lodgo is held at the large room of the Clarence Hotel . The JIasonie furniture is not only complete in CA-ery respect , but sumptuous in its character . The working is highly creditable
to the officers , from the W . M . down to the O . G ., and it is evident , that the brethren at Pontypool are as zealous and earnest in the interests of the Craft as they are persevering and proficient in the discharge of their duties . The two Newport lodges , as will be seen , mustered in great strength , and to facilitate the return of the brethren after the banquet a special train from the Pontypool Station , at ten p . m ., was placed at their service . Shortly after two o'clock the lodge Avas opened in duo form ,
the AV . JI ., Bro . BartholomeAV Thomas , occupying the chair . After the minutes had been read and confirmed , it AVUS proposed by Bro . B . Thomas , and seconded by Bro . Kennard— " That an address of condolence be sent to the widow and family of our late beloved Provincial Grand Jlaster , Bro . John Etheringtnn AVelch Rolls , deceased ; and that the AA , JI . elect and Secretary be requested to forward the same as soon as possible . " It was also proposed by Bro . Thomas , seconded by Bro
Griffiths— "That the AV . JI . elect , Bro . II . 11 . Kennard , is in CA-ery way qualified to fill the vacant office of Prov . G . JI . for this county , aud that -a committee of the principal Officers be formed to take immediate steps to bring Bro . Kennard ' s name before the Grand Jlaster of England . " Proposed by the S . AA' ., seconded by tho J . W . — " That a cordial and hearty A'ote of thanks be given to Bro . Bartholomew Thomas j for the verv able manner in which he has fulfilled the duties of
his office as AA . JI . of this lodge during tbe past year , and for his faithful and energetic sen-ices on our behalf ; that this resolution he entered mi the minutes , and a copy thereof sent by the Secretary to Bro . Thomas . " Proposed by the AA ' . JL , seconded by Bro . Treharne : — " That a similar A-ote of thanks be given to the Secretary , Bro . Williams , for the great efficiency with which he has discharged his onerous duties . "
There being one candidate for initiation into the rites and mysteries of the Order , the impressive cermony was ably performed b y the AV . JI . Then came the grand ceremonial of the day , the installation , which Avas undertaken , as it always should be , by the retiring AV . M . Bro . North Down ) , advanced , and , addressing the chair , offered for the acceptance of the lodge a massive medallion in solid gold . He desired to present this valuable jeAvcl to the Kennard Lodge as
a token of regard to his brother , Bro . R . AVolley on his accession to the office of Junior Warden . The AV . JI . thanked Bro . Demay for his handsome present , and promised that the medallion should be handed down as un heirloom of the lodge . AVe may add that the jewel , which Bro . Demay vouches to be 230 years old , for 80 years of which period it has remained in his OAVU family , is iu a splendid state of preservation . It is supposed to belong to the Royal Arch degree , but the legend ,
Avhich is iu Latin , Avould seem to point in another direction . At all events , the medallion is unquestionabl y very ancient and of great value , and the Kennard Lod ge may well be congratulated on its acquisition . The remainder of the lodgo business having been disposed of ( including propositions for three new members ) , the brethren adjourned at Bvo o ' clock to the town hall , where the banquet was laid out , by Bro .
