Architecture And Archæology.

The area of the building has been fitted to scat about 250 persons , and there is also sitting accommodation in the chancel and chancel aisles , the Avholo of tho seats being of stained deal , open and uniform . The larger of the two galleries Avill afford accommodation , for 150 children , and the smaller one will seat about 130 adults . The building is lighted from the roof , which is formed Avith trusses , filled in

AA-ith tracery , and plastered between the rafters ; the Avood-AA-ork being stained and A-arnishcd . Midway up the roof , at the sides , arc two roivs of AvindoAvs , similar to clerestories . The east Avinclow is of stained glass , and represents the foliage of the A'ine , Avith texts of Scripture intertwined The " church is built of Pennant stone , ivith freestone dressings , the extreme length ofthe edifice being 106 ft ., and

its breadth 30 ft .: it is 45 ft . high at the centre of the roof , and 25 ft . at the sides . The galleries arc abonfc 22 ft . deep . Tho front in Little James ' s-back consists of a porch , Avith turret , containing a staircase leading to the galleries , and Avith spire over it ; two arcades of AvindoAvs throiv in light from the galleries , aud the gable surmounted by a carved cross . The AvindoAvs throughout arc traceried , Avith shafts and carved capitals .

St . Luke ' s church , Bedmiiister , has been consecrated . Tho edifice is situate on the NCAV Cut , about half-way between the Bath and Bcdminster bridges . The building is calculated to contain sittings for " 1200 , upAvards of one-half free , and the total cost of erection Avill be nearly £ 7000 . The building comprises a nave , Avith north and south aisles , each 107 ft . long , and 25 ft . Gin . and 16 ft . Avide respectively . The

nave is separated from the aisles by arcades of six arches on the north and five on the south side . Eastward of the nave is a chancel 27 ft . long by 20 fc . A \ 'idc , Avith a polygonal apsidal end forming tho sanctuarA ' .

The parish church at Alton ( a seat of the Earl of Shrcivsbury and Talbot ) , Avhich has for some time past been in a state of neglect and Avant of rerKiir , has just been in part restored . The church ivas built in the twelfth century , but it Avas rebuilt about thirty years ago , AA-hen some of the most striking of its architectural features Avere lost . . The accumulated AvhitoAvash and plaster of centuries has been scraped

from aroAV of Norman arches , a part of the old church Avhich IIOAV forms an interesting object in the nave . An Earl y Pointed arch , Avhich Avas built up and hidden by the Avest gallery , and the existence of which Avas almost unsuspected , has been throAvn open by taking doAvn the gallery , andnoAv cuonects the toAvei- ivith the body of the church .

The licAv ( R . C . ) Church of St . Saviour , Lower Dominickstrcet , Dublin , AVUS opened on the 15 th of January . Tho total length of the church is 181 feet ; breadth , 72 feet ; the height , from the floor to the ridge , 80 feet . The altar is of Caen stone , richly carved . The side facing the HUA- consists of scA-cn niches , forming an arcade . A sculptured figure stands in each niche . The reredos consists of an

arcade of six arches , resting on marble shafts . The arches are covered with crocheted gables ,, and the spandrils OA-er the arches are filled in Avith medallion heads of saints . The eastern Avindoivs of apao are filled in ivith stained glass . The ceiling is panelled and gilded , each panel containing a medallion representing various symbolical characters . The roof of nave is panelled , and is semi-octagonal on section .

There are eighteen full sized figures of saints , forming the corbels of the main ribs . The passages between the seats are laid Avith Minton ' s encaustic tiling . The total cost of the building is about £ 18 , 000 .

A neiv ( R . C . ) church is about to be erected in Shop-street , Drogheda , for the Angustinian fathers . The building will consist of nave , chancel , side aisles , toAver , and sacristy . The total length will be 150 feet . The . roof is to be opentimbered , aud stained and varnished . The church will be lighted by seven lancet Avindoivs over the principal entrance , Avithin a dripstone forming a single arch , and double lancets inclerestory and aisles . The style is to be Gothic , of the thirteenth centurv .

A IICAV ( R . C . ) church is about to be erected at Lixna , co . Kerry . Tho plan is oblong- and consists of nave and chancel , north and south aisles , and sacristy . There is a small toAver at the south-Avest angle . The nave is 81 feet loii " , by

30 feet AA'ido . The breadth of the side aisles is 15 feet . The roof is to be open timbered . The chancel is semicircular on plan , and is li ghted by four windoAvs , on a level Avith those in clerestory of nave . The style is Norman . The addition of a toAver and spivc is contemplated . The amount of contract is £ 3000 .

The principal AA-orks comprised in Mr . Scott ' s plans for the restoration of St . Mary ' s Church , AYhittlesoy , Avhich have been adopted by the subscribers arc—the removal of the organ , and throwing open the arch at the Avest end , reglazing all the Aviiidows ivith cathedral glass , placing neiv doors throughout the building , aud re-seating the Avhole ot the church ivith seats of the usual modern form , made ot

pitch-pine , at an estimated cost of £ 1-1-00 ; the Avarming ol the church by Holdeivs system , and gas-fittings for the AA-hole of the interior , at a cost of £ 300 ; the repair of the south choir aisle , a-fc au estimated cost of £ 180 j the reloading of the roof ofthe nave , new parapets to the clerestory , repairs of the lead ivorks on the other roofs , and the drainage and underpinning of the walls throughout , at an estimated cost of £ 150 . The subscriptions already amount to £ 1100 .

Tho IICAV church Avhich bas been built at Wiggiuton , near York , has been opened for diA'ine service . It is a plain structure , devoid of ornamentation , and erected , comparatively speaking , at a small cost , only £ 700 having been expended in the building of the edifice , Avhich stands . upon the site ofthe old fabric . The edifice is in the Early English stylo of architecture . The Avails are of Bradford sets , Avith

dressings of Whitby stone , and the roof is high pitched and open timbered . The church consists of a nave , -15 feet long by 21 feet 6 inches broad , and a- chancel , the length of Avhich is 20 feet by 14 feet in breadth . Upon the south side of the chancel stands a small vestry , 8 feet square , and on the north side of the nave is erected the porch . At the ivest end ofthe structure is a bell turret in which are placed the two bells that

were used in the old church . The east Avindoiv is of three lights , and at the west end are two single-light Aviiidows . Iu the south Avail are inserted four windows , one having two lights and the other three being a single light each . On the opposite side , in the north Avail , is a double-lighted wmdoAV and two others , possessing a single light each . The AvindoAvs have trefoil headsand are filled in ivith cathedral lass

, g , and ornamented with a- coloured bordering . The pewing of the church is of deal , the seats being open , and stained and varnished in imitation of oak , and the timbers of the roof being coloured to correspond . Tho flooring of the church consists of plain flags , but Avithin the communion rails a little decoration has been introduced , tho floor being paved Avith red , black , and buff tiles . A considerable

quantity of the stone of the old church has been rendered useful . It has been chipped and dressed , and made available in forming the foundation of the neiv fabric . The neiv structure can seat upAvards of 100 adults and 40 children .

The main building of St . Paul ' s New Schools , Hulme , occupies a site 53 feet 8 inches by 39 feet . The site being small and expensive , and the accommodation required being too great to allow for a playground , the difficulty has been met by the introduction of lofty and Avell ventilated rooms . The building is constructed in tivo stories . The loiver or ground floor is portioned off : —firstly , into an infant

schoolroom , 52 feet 6 inches by 25 feet , inside measure , and occupies two-thirds of the space ; sccondty , with a stone staircase , offices , ' and committee-room . The upper room measures 52 feet 6 inches by 36 feet 6 inches , and is divided into fou . i bays and three principals , of simple construction , the tiebeams being supported by ornamental brackets springing from the side Avails . The roof is not entirely open to the

ridge , but the upper part is ceiled oil , leaving a space in the apex for ventilation . The height of the Avail-plate from the floor is 1-1- feet , and the height to tho centre of the ceilingis 2-3 feet . The Avhole of the roof timbers arc stained broAvn oak . The general character of the architecture is Gothic . The Mnlbei-ry-strect front is the only one exposed to view , and possesses few ornamental features , except those

attainable from a mixture of red and Avhitc bricks and Yorkshire stone dressings . There are five windows in the front , and side AvindoAvs . The Avhole building is surmounted Avith a small bell gable and gilt vane .
