The memorable exploits of the first-named service , originated in the time of AVilliam III ., Avere so Avell-known and so highly appreciated that he need not allude to them at length , but he might on this occasion be permitted to say that in tbe army there Avere many Masons , ancl that the great Duke of Wellington ivas a member of the Fraternity . to the navy , it appeared thafc ships of Avar Avere likely to be remodelled— -put on an iron footing , he might almost say ( laughter ) —bufc bo that as it might , he bad no doubt that England ivould be able , not only to hold her own , as in times past , but to maintain her Avell-earned supremacy ou the seas , The militiaan institution so entirely English—Avas Avorthy of the highest commendation . It was of tho greatest value , and at one time ,

Avas England ' s only defence on land . Of the volunteers , many regiments of Avhich he Avas happy to see existed in this county , lie could not speak too highly . He was not present at the review which took place at Brighton , on Easter Monday , but he had been struck Avith the remark of the French Ambassador , AVIIO Avitnessecl it , and AVIIO said that had be nofc been a Frenchman , he should have most heartily cheered them on that occasion .
