in his working of this exalted degree of the Masonic Order , nor in the provision he has made for this generally , by the purchase of premises at once eligible and elegant , in which lodges and chapters can work , and where brethren of any , and indeed all the local lodges , can congregate for either passing business or
• pleasing literary pursuits , and embrace the latter at a yearly subscription so exceedingly trifling as to be within the reach of the most limited of the Craft . Could I have assumed the freedom boldly , I should have embodied in the notice of our last convocation a slight history of the chapter since 1 S 28 , and have
been forward enough to state whom I considered its true friends , and whom not . There are many trifles , ¦ passim , which might meet the Craft without offence to authority , through the medium of the MASOXIC MAGAZIXE , and by discreetly advancing opinion and creating inquiry , show a smoother path , and open a more pleasing prospect than has yet been trodden or seen .
The interests of St . John ' s Chapter are beginning to manifest themselves in the introduction of candidates , who are likely to increase them . Tenacity to purpose is only needful , and I trust it will be timely and truly entertained . I have , in conclusion , to regret the length of my
present communication , and also the backwardness of many members of our lodge and chapter , who ¦ have greater opportunity and far higher skill in wielding the pen ; and who might , therefore , if so fraternally disposed , have removed the subscription of Yours fratemailv , J . TESTIMONIAL TO Ax ODDFELLOW . —On the 4 th insfc ., the members and friends of Prince Howell the Good Lodge of Oddfellows , Abertylery , Monmouthshire , met together to render a substantial proof of the estimation in which , they held Bro . W . G . Jones , P . P . G . M ., what for twenty-six years , had never absented himself from a lodge meeting , and had always taken .. a lively interest in the order . The testimonial consisted of a massive silver pint tankard , engraved with the arms of the
Order , and an inscription , with two coloured emblems framed , and an address on vellum . We are happy to add that Bro . W . G . Jones is a very energetic member of the Isca Lodge of Freemasons ( No . 683 ) , Newport , Monmouthshire . FREEDOM : OB CHURCHES A WORKING CLASS QUESTION . — The National Association for Freedom of Worship are arranging a series of conferences of workmen in London and other great towns upon the reasons of their alleged absence from public
worship , it being considered that the large body of Churchmen who attribute that absence to their being excluded by the . appropriation of the seats in places of worship to a comparative few , have not been duly represented at the conferences hitherto held .

MASONIC FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN PARIS ON - THE 15 TH op JUNE , 1 S 67 . —The Grand Orient of France baving decided on holding a Masonic Festival on the loth day of June next , which will be followed by a banquet , as announced in the MAGAZINE of the 16 th instant , the Secretary-General of the Grand Orient has communicated to us the pleasure of the
Grand Orient that all brethren holding under the several Masonic jurisdictions in Great Britain may make application through the office of the FREEMASONS' MAGAZINE for any information they are desirous of obtaining relative to the Masonic meetings , and the general arrangements for the reception of foreign , brethren visiting Paris at and after the opening of
the Exhibition . We have now the pleasure of announcing to our readers that we have completed such arrangements as will , we hope , materially facilitate their being received by the officers of the Grand Orient in Paris , as also to insure such brethren the opportunity of assisting at the Masonic festival , and being present at the banquet should they desire it . The following is
a copy of the circular announcing the general arrangements for the festival : — "General Arrangements . —The festive lodge to open at two p . m ., and the banquet at six p . m . Subscriptions received at the office of the Secretary to the Grand Orient of France , 16 , Rue Cadet , Paris . Subscription fee , 20 francs ( 16 s . ) Subscriptions received down to the 1 st of May from members
of Continental and Algerian lodges , and to tbe 15 th of May from Transatlantic lodges . The committee are under the necessity of fixing these terms with a view to know the approximate number of subscribers , previous to organising the festival . Civil
( evening ) dress compulsory . " Printed forms of vouchers tor dinner tickets are now ready , and may be had at the office of the FREEMASONS' MAGAZINE by such members of the Order as will forward their application , together with their Masonic certificate , or certificates , in a registered letter , or by bookpost parcel , together with a post-office order for sixteen shillings .
The voucher and documents will be returned , prepaid and registered , without any further charge , within three days . LODGE or HARMONY ( NO . 220 ) , GARSTON , LANCASHIRE WEST . —We are requested to state that the regular nights of meeting of this lodge have been changed from the first Monday to the fourth Wednesday in each month , the Prov . THE annual Court of Governors of the Cheshire Educational Masonic Institution will be held at the Crewe Arms Hotel , Crewe , on Wednesday , the 27 th inst ., at one o ' clock , to receive and determine the several recommendations of the General
Committee to place five boys on the Educational Fund ; to receive the treasurer ' s accounts , as audited , and the auditor ' s report ; to elect the medical officer , secretaries , treasurer , committee , and auditors for the ensuing year ; and for the transaction of the annual business of the Institution .
