The Jesuit , Joseph Torrubia , by feigning great sympathy for the institution , got himself initiated , having obtained previously from the Pope exoneration of the oath he had to take . Then he travelled over
Spain to find out who were members , finally denouncing to the Inquisition the names of all the Masons of the ninety-seven Lodges then existing , who were condemned to death . In consequence of the great severity exercised , Freemasonry was scarcely ever spoken of for more than fifty years . 2 nd . These intrepid brethren who braved the Inquisition , were
