Masonic Refreshment.

MASONIC REFRESHMENT .

AS it is often intimated by those who have no taith in their profession that Masons frequently indulge in revelry by night , and their banquets and festivals are occasions for excess and intemperance , injurious to health and reputation ,

as well as wrong done to their families and friends , so all parties concerned , both inside and outside of Masonry , are reminded of the ancient charpe , which is still in force with all its binding authority , in these words , " you must also consult your health , by not continuing together too late , or

too long from home after Lodge hours are past ; and by avoiding g luttony or drunkenness , that your families be not neglected or injured , nor you be disabled from working . " This charge is repeated in substance in the lectures and

laws of Masonry until every Brother who has an attentive ear must know that , and violation of it is a Masonic offence , which tends to the scandal and disgrace of both the Masonic character and fraternity and of such offence no true Mason will be guilty .

As a speculative science , Masonry seeks its stimulus from a higher source than the cup that intoxicates , and its nourishment is designed to invigorate tne mental faculties and strengthen the moral qualities , rather than to satiate the physical appetite and gratif y any indulgence in eating

and drinking ; and though its banquet may be of the choicest viands , from mingling with which the intoxicating bowl is strictly prohibited , yet the main feature of the entertainment is the feast of reason and flow of wit . As Masonry

recognises that it is the mind that makes the man ; and as it regards the internal more than the external qualifications , so in accordance with this idea its refreshments are to be mental rather than physical .

By a close adherence to this idea the purposes of refreshment can never be converted into intemperance and excess , nor will any particinant be kept too long from home , neglect his family , or disable himself from duty . —Rev . Gilbert Small , in " Masonic Sun . "
