What It Is To Be A Freemason.

WHAT IT IS TO BE A FREEMASON .

OUR contemporary , the masonic Home Journal , comp iles the folloAving on this subject : To be a Mason in the true sense of tho word must carry with it the idea of good citizenshi p aud faithfulness in the performance of all the social duties . A man may boAv at

the altar , take the solemn obligations , sign the constitution and yet be without those essential prerequisites Avhich constitute tho true man of the order . Is he a drunkard

profane , a constant violator of the moral law ? If so , he can , in name only , be a Mason . It were far better for the order if either there were reformation or a rigid exercise of discipline . —GRAND MASTER GUDJER ( North Carolina ) .

By way of summarizing all that has been said , both as to theory and practice in our Masonic life , let me say that our whole duty as Masons may be told in three words . These three words reach out to and embrace everything

which pertains to the practical part of life . And this is the way by which we are introduced to them . The tenets of a Mason ' s professson are brotherly love , relief and truth . These form the grand corner-stone on which tbe whole

fabric of Freemasonry is built , and whilst resting here it bids defiance to superstition and error in whatever form they may seek to attack and strive to remove from its foundations . —M . W . BRO . BAKKLEY ( Mississippi ) .

A Mason who would command tho respect of his brethren and would bring no discredit upon the fraternity , must have strongly developed characteristic manliness . With these he can everyAvhere find recognition as one worthy of

the friendship and confidence of the people , and without these elements in his character he will not be considered as a worthy associate of those who strive to represent the Masonic standard of lifo . According to the older law , he

should be p hysically perfect in so far as to conform to the ancient physical ideal of perfection , but it is now required that he should have more than this side of his being developed ; he must be a well-balanced man , mentally

understand his relations with his follows , and he must be so spiritually quickened as to exhibit in his life the influence of a religious spirit and a personal conception of his obligations to the Supreme Architect of tho Universe . — —REV . BRO . HILL ( Grand Orator , Indian Territory ) .

Another important element well known to all true Masons is the strong cement of brotherly love and affection which uuites us in one sacred band of friends and brothers . Masonry is but another name for that pure spirit of

brotherl y love which should unite all men under Heaven . That love which teaches men to desire the welfare and happiness of all mankind , and to labour to promote that

happiness by thought , word and deed . Certainly Masonry has done much to teach the world that men can meet , live and act as brothers , although they are of different religions and political faith . —G . MASTBK SLAUGHTER ( Nebraska ) .
