NOTICES OF MEETINGS .
— : o : — NEPTUNE LODGE , No . 30 . THE first meeting of this old and flourishing Lodge , since the installation of Bro . Henry Povey as Worshipful Master , took place on the evening of Thursday , the 22 nd ult ., at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street , when there were present Bros . J Harper , Ph . D ., I . P . M ., E . W . Conlcher J . W ., E . F . Storr P . M . Treasurer , George Britton P . M . Secretary , W . Cook S . D ., J . Corbett J . D ., W Neats I . G . ; P . M . ' s T . P . Collings , J . S . Norman , C . Harconrt , H . S .
Crawford ; E . S . Hopper , L . V . Walker , W . J . Charles , E . G . Jolhffc , T . Whiting , A . Macgregor , R . King , W . Brooks , H . Savidge , J . Parkinson Tyler , and others , with Bro . J . C . Anderson 754 as a visitor . There was no business on the agenda , and after opening and closing in the three degrees the brethren sat down to a sumptuous banquet , when the usual toasts were honoured . Bro . Harper , in proposing the
health of the Worshipful Master , referred to the qualifications possessed by Bro . Povey for the office of Worshipfnl Master , into which they had lately seen him installed ; and their only regret must be that they had not the opportunity that evening of witnessing an exemplification of those abilities they all knew were at his command . The Worshipful Master , who was most cordially received , said it was
very gratifying to know he had the confidence and entire respect of the brethren of this Lodge . It was yet very early daya to mention his qualifications for the office to which , by the kindness of the memhers , he had been elected ; they had no work that evening , and it appeared rather as " a frost . " That , however , was his misfortune , and not his fault , and if tho year waa not to bo numerically
successfnl , he trusted it would be so socially . He mentioned his intention of going up this year as a Steward at the Festival for the Girls' School , and ns this was the first Stewardship he had taken in connection with this Lodge , he trusted the brethren wonld co-operate with him , and make his list creditable both to their Worshipfnl Master and the Lodge . In proposing the health of their Visitor , he said this was a
toast which was always . well receivpd in the Neptune Lodge 3 at their last meeting they were honoured with the presence of no fewer than twenty visitors . That evening they were favoured with only one , still the toast was as worthy their acceptance as though they had a nnmber . They extended to Bro . Anderson the right hand of fellowship , and gave him a hearty welcome . The toast waa cordially
received , and Bro . Anderson said , as a young Mason , he felt hia position somewhat in being alone to respond for so important a toast aa that of the Visitors . He hailed from the North , as they could hear , and was as yet only a fledgling in Masonry , and was not very much at home when he was away from his " mother . " He waa very pleased to be amongst them to-night , and to meet so joyful and
harmonious a company , and hoped he might have the pleasure again at no very distant period . The W . M . next proposed the health of the Past Masters ; he said it was only by their co-operation and kindness that the Lodge conld expect to prosper . To-night they were favoured with the company of their veteran brother Past Master Norman , whom it was a great pleasure to see , and he would couple
his name with the toast . Brother Norman said the Worship , fal Master had been pleased to associate his name with the toast , saying he was glad to see him again . On his part , he could truly say he was glad to meet the brethren once more , and was much disappointed not to have been present at Brother Povey ' s installation , and at the banquet he heard they had
afterwards . It gave him sincere pleasure to meet the new Officers ; it was a certainty they had an excellent Treasurer and Secretary . He hoped they might have plenty of work before them at the next meeting , and no doubt from the way in which the W . M . had condncted the opening and closing of the Lodge , he wonld display all those qualifications which they knew he possessed , and for which the
Olcl Neptune Lodgo had long been proverbial . Bro . Povey had presided over their banquet in a very amiable and agreeable manner ; he had not spoken too much at length , yet had left nothing unsaid . He did not know he had ever attended where the duties of the chair had been managed in a neater manner ; there had been nothing tedious , bnt everything was graceful and admirable . No doubt the Past
Masters had been looked up to for many years , thongh they were not so numerous now as in the past . But those who were left had ever the real interests of the Lodge at heart , and were most anxious to see the chair filled by good men . They could all admire and appreciate good working , and he considered from what he had seen that evening the prospects of the Lodge were such as to afford them every
satisfaction . The health of the Treasnrer and Secretary were well received and acknowledged by Brothers Storr and Britton , after which the Officers were complimented in similar manner , and the list was closed in the nsual way by tho Tyler . During fthe evening there was some excellent vocal and instrumental music , and a very happy and harmonious evening was passed .
