George , dropped anchor in -what is now known as the harbour of Wcstport , and two thousand men—infantry , cavalry and artillery , were landed and rendezvoused on a hill that overlooked the Sound . The whole force was under the command of Genera ! Tryon , ono of the most unprincipled of men . He was the Tory governor of New York , and having a natural genius for snch pursuits , was . armed by his masters with a fire-brand instead of a sword , and employed as incendiary-gjneral in n predatory way . Iu 1777 he burned Danbury ; in 1778 Fairfield and Norvvalk , and attempted to destroy New Uavon in the same way in 1779 .
Wooster , with the limited forces at his command , had done what he could to protect Danbnry from the inroads of the brutal Tryon , who disgraced his country ' s flag by his burnings and robberies . Ofi a bright morning , soon after he invaded Danbnry , as the redoubtable General ascended Hoy t's Hill , a few miles from Danbury ,
