CONSECRATIONS .

WHITE ROSE OF YORK CHAPTER . A CEEEMONY of an interesting character attracted a large number of members of the fraternity of Eoyal Arch Masonry to the Freemasons' Hall , Surrey Street , Sheffield , on the 25 th . Two Eoyal Arch Chapters have flourished in Sheffield for a

great number of years , and the membership has reached proportions which were held to justify the establishment of a third . The necessary Charter from Grand Chapter was obtained , and the consecration of the White Eose of York Chapter , No . 2491 , in connection with the White Eose of York Lodge ,

consecrated a couple of years ago , naturally excited interest as unique in local Masonic ceremonies . It is nearly one hundred years since any such event occurred , the Paradise Chapter having received its Charter in 1798 , and the Loyalty three years previously .

In the absence of the Grand Superintendent of West Yorks . the Eight Hon . Wm . Lawies Jackson , M . P ., the ceremony of consecration was delegated to Comp . Ensor Drury P . Z . 139 and 296 Past Prov . Grand H ., whose labours on behalf of Arch Masonry are well known and highly appreciated , not only in Sheffield , but in a wider area outside .

Provincial Grand Chapter was opened at four o ' clock , when the Consecrating Principal , who was supported by Comp . Henry Smith P . G . P . Soj . England P . Prov . G . H . as H ., and Comp . John Shaw as J ., briefly addressed the Companions on the character of the ceremony to be performed , after which the Prov . G .

Eegistrar read the petition addressed to Grand Chapter , and the Charter granted in response thereto . The Dedication Prayer and the Invocation having been given , the Consecrating

Principal perambulated the Chapter , strewing corn , emblematical of plenty , pouring wine , emblematical of gladness , pouring oil , emblematical of peace , and strewing salt , emblematical of friendship .

The Chapter having been formally constituted , the Consecrating Principal again briefly addressed the Companions , and proceeded to invest the three Principals Designate , Comp . John

Hunt P . Z . 139 as Z ., J . Shaw P . Z . 139 as H ., and T . H . Vernon Z . 139 as J . The other Officers invested were Comp . W . Gadsby Scribe E ., W . Gunstone Scribe N ., C . F . Brindley P . S ., Dr . John Stokes 1 st A . S ., Geo . Wish 2 nd A . S .

Provincial Grand Chapter having withdrawn , a number of propositions for joining and exaltation were received , and after hearty good wishes had been tendered by the visiting Companions , the Chapter was closed . The Companions thereupon adjourned to a banquet , served by Comp . Turner steward of the hall .

Companion H . J . Garnett proposed the health of the three newly-installed Principals , prophesying , from the success which had attended the White Eose of York Lodge , a brilliant future for the Chapter associated with it . Comp . John Hunt responded in a happy speech , the H . and J . also acknowledging the toast .

The services rendered in the consecration of the Chapter were dwelt upon by Comp . H . Arnison , in proposing the health of the Consecrating Principal Companion Ensor Drury , the toast being suitably acknowledged .

Other toasts followed , the speeches being pleasantly interspersed with a musical entertainment , to which Comps . W . Gadsby , W . H . Peasegood , Albert Howe , and others contributed . — " Sheffield Daily Telegraph . "

BROXBOURNE CHAPTER .

THIS addition to the roll of Chapters was consecrated on Saturday , 21 st ult ., at the Hadley Hotel , New Barnet , the ceremony being performed by Comp . T . F . Halsey , M . P ., Provincial Grand Superintendent of Hertfordshire , who was assisted by Comp . G . E . Lake Prov . G . H ., and several other Provincial Officers . The consecration banquet subsequently took place , Bro . Bennett , the host , providing an excellent repast .

The " Freemason , " of Toronto , Canada , challenges any Brother who was present at the last annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontaria , to show any practical or beneficial results accruing to the Craft from that

session of that Body . Evidently there is need of reform , when it can be declared that a session of a Grand Lodge " was not only barren of results , but decidedly uninteresting , " and when the person so charging can defy any one who was present to produce proof to the contrary .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

THE regular monthly Council meeting was held on Friday , 27 th ult ., Bro . Eichard Eve in the chair . Amongst those present were Bros . Le Feuvre , Pulman , James Stephens , W . Eussell , J . W . Burgess , J . Leach Barrett , Thomas Taylor , and J . M . McLeod Secretary . The Council meeting of January having referred a case to

the Deputy Grand Eegistrar , it was reported that in Bro . Bucknill ' s opinion the Council were wrong in rejecting the petition of the candidate . The matter was thereupon referred back to the Petitions Committee for further report , and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Bucknill , Q . C ., M . P ., Dep . G . Eeg .

The attendance of Bro . Vassar-Smith at meetings of the Board of Management was excused for six months , in consequence of his ill-health , a necessity which we are convinced will be regretted by every supporter of the Institution , as also by every Brother who has had the pleasure of making Bro . Vassar-Smith ' s acquaintance in Freemasonry .

Bro . Keyser P . G . D . and Patron was re-nominated as Treasurer for the ensuing year . Bros . Fairchild , Fitzgerald , Pritchard , Stephens , and A . C . Spaull ( retiring members ) were nominated for election on the Board of Management , and none other being proposed there will be no contest for the London section of the Board , at the election on Friday next , 10 th inst .

Bros . Bevir ( Wiltshire ) , Diamond ( Derbyshire ) , Pulman ( Northumberland ) , and Eussell ( Kent ) , retiring members , were re-nominated , and also the following representatives of Provinces —Clowes ( Sussex ) , Levick ( Hertfordshire ) , Smith ( Leicestershire and Eutland ) , W . H . Spaull ( Shropshire ) , Whittley ( Devonshire ) , for the five vacancies in the Provincial section of the Board .

Bro . Eve gave notice of an important motion for the Quarterly Court , in the following terms : —

" That the Quarterly Court of Governors and Subscribers of 8 th April 1892 having authorised the Board of Management ' to entertain negociations for the realisation of the estate of the Institution to the best advantage , ' and the Board having determined ' that it is desirable to remove the Institution

from Wood Green to some more eligible site where sufficient space for an enlarged schoolhouse and playground accommodation would be available , ' this Quarterly Court hereby authorises the Board to purchase a site and to erect thereon a new school , and to dispose of the present land and premises to the best advantage . "

It was again reported that Maurice William Hart , No . 34 on list of candidates , had been withdrawn , he having secured a presentation for Christ ' s Hospital . There will thus be fifty candidates for the twenty-five vacancies to be filled on Friday next .

WEST LANCASHIRE INSTITUTION .

THE final meeting of the general committee of the annual Masonic festival and ball , held at the Town Hall , Liverpool , on the 14 th January last , in aid of the funds of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , took place on the 20 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall in that city , where Bro . Dr . Crawford P . P . G . Treas . Chairman of the Committee presided

over a numerous gathering of Brethren interested in the charity . Bro . E . A . Povey Honorary Treasurer read the balance-sheet , from which it appeared that the sum of £ 297 3 s had been received from the sale of ordinary and stewards' tickets , patrons ' tickets realised £ 233 2 s , donations , including £ 105 from the

chairman , amounted to £ 137 16 s , £ 42 had been received to constitute two ladies Vice-Presidents of the charity , the total being £ 737 12 s 3 d . After the necessary disbursements of £ 214 lis 6 d in connection with the expenses of the ball , there

remained the munificent sum of £ 523 0 s 9 d to be handed over to the funds of the institution—the largest amount which has ever been realised during the forty-seven years the festive gathering has been held .

On the motion of Bro . Broadbridge , seconded by Brother Vernon , the accounts were passed unanimously . Bro . George Broadbent P . M . 1013 Honorary Secretary read his report , in the course of which he pointed out the very satisfactory results of the ball . This was a very pleasant

ending to their labours , which he was sure would be fully appreciated by all the Brethren who had taken an active part in the good work in aid of a deserving charity . The Lord Mayor

had their best thanks for his presence and support , and unstinted praise was due to their Chairman ( Bro . Dr . Crawford ) , who had been untiring in his efforts to promote socially and financially the interest of the ball .

On the motion of Bro . P . Armstrong , seconded by Brother J . B . Mackenzie , the report was adopted . Brother Dr . Crawford , on the proposition of Brother J . T . Callow , seconded by Brother T . J . Jarman , and supported by Brothers Broadbridge and Harradon , was elected a patron of the
