had tho honour to hold for many years , and which , during the absence of our highly esteemed and talouted Grand Master ( who has beon doing the Craft and us honour elsewhere ) , you so kindly say has been satisfactorily filled .
It is , indeed , a source of pride and gratification to me to learn that , in administering the very onerous duties of my office , I have been so fortunate as to give satisfaction ; and , as yon further kindly intimate , I have gained the esteem and regard of the members of the District Grand Lodge .
Words can hardly express how consolatory this acknowledgment is to me , for tho duties of my offico were not at all times of a pleasant nature , nor were my intentions for tho good of tho Craft always rightly understood , in my desire to uphold one of tho graud principles
of our brotherhood , without which Masonry would bo nothing move than a huge sham and a snare ; nay , as bad as a system of Masonry devoid of the grandest of all our graud principles , " our belief in and reverence for God . " The purity of those intentions , and your approbation , which I truly .-ipprcciato , is , however , my solace .
But , in all this , I should lie selfish aud ungrateful if I took all the credit to myself , and failed to recognise how much my success was dependent on your kind co-operation ; nor can I refrain from bearing willing testimony to the zeal of our late District Grand Secretary ,
the Very Worshipful , T . J . G . Lewis , to whom I am grateful for past services ; and T have no hesitation in stating that the present satisfactory state of the District Grand Lodge is the result of the members working together in harmony , which I hope will always bo characteristic of our Masonic labours .
The testimonial which accompanies tho address which you havo so generously presented to me , I accept with grateful thanks . Permit me to express my gratitude for this token of your brotherly love
