MARK MASONRY .
ON 22 nd ult . there wns a gathering of tho Mark Masons ot the Province of Cornwall , afc St . Austell , the occasion being the consecration of a new Mark Lodge , to be known hereafter as tho " St . Austell , " No . 275 on the roll of the Mark Grand Lodge of Ens-land . The meeting was held at the elegant little Masonic Hall belonging to tho Peace and Harmony Craft Lodgo . The imposing ceremonial of
tho consecration of the Lodge was conducted by tho Deputy Prov . Grand Master , ably assisted by Bros . Hnsrhan , Johns and West , acting P . G . S . W . ; Bros . W . P . Smith acted as P . G . J . W ., Controller Blake as Past Grand Sword Bearer , Emra Holmes as Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies , tho Rev . E . Gill as Provincial Grand Chaplain ancl Onanist . Tho Provincial Grand Secretary read tho warrant
constituting the Lodge , signed by the Earl of Lathom Grancl Mark Master , on 1 st January last , which mentioned as the founders , Bros . W . J . Hnghan , C . Truseott jun ., W . J . West , W . Guy , W . Mason , W . Luke , T . H . Lukes , J . W . Higman . The Lodge having been duly dedicated and constituted , tho ballot was taken for the following , as joining members , who were all unanimously elected : — Bros . Sir
Charles G . Sawle , Bart ., Rev . E . B . Gill , R . Parson , W . P . Smith , H . De Legh , and W . Nettle . The ballot was then taken for the following brethren , candidates for advancement to the degreo of M . M ., who were also unanimously accepted : —Wor . Bros . Rev . F . B . Paul P . M . 1151 Past Provincial Grand Chaplain , T . J . Smith P . M . 496 , J . Job P . M . 496 , F . Williams P . M . 977 Past Provincial Grand Sword
Bearer , F . Parkyn P . M . 856 ; Bros . W . Tredinnick J . D . 496 , J . de Cressy Treffry J . D . 977 , A . Sheriff Clunes D . C . 977 , J . A . Blarney I . G . 1785 , C . K . Stevens S . D . 977 , B . Houseley S . D . 496 , J . Holfc J . W . 856 , W . J . Watts 496 , W . Real Tyler 496 . The whole of the brethren being present , with the exception of Bros . Paul , Job , Stevens and Parkyn , fchey were duly and regularly obligated and
advanced to the honourable degree of Mark Master Mason , the impressive and dramatic ceremony being performed by Bro . W . J . Hughan wifch his customary ability . The learned brother—whose works on Masonry are known and read wherever the English language is spoken , and nowhere perhaps more widely than in the United States of America—then delivered an oration on the principles
of Mark Masonry , which was listened to with great interest and attention . He mentioned incidentally that there was a Mark Lodge held at Redruth in 1806 , and thafc a Knight Templar Encampment had been held there since 1797 . Dwelling upon the great antiquity of the Mark as a degree , he said he had seen the charter of a Mark Lods * e in Scotland , with' Marks of the members attached , of the date
of 1678 . These members were noblemen , and men of various professions , as well as operative Masons and other handicraftsmen , which showed that speculative Masonry existed at this period . At the conclusion of this most interesting address , Bro . West installed Bro . C . Truseott , who was presented by Sir Charles Sawle , as W . M . into the chair of A . afc a special Lodge of Installed Masters . He then
appointed and invested the following as his Officers : —Bros . Mason S . W ., Guy J . W ., A . Luke M . O ., T . S . Lukes S . O ., J . W . Higman J . O ., A . Luke Treasurer , R . Parsons Secretary , De Legh ( by proxy ) Reg . of Marks , Rev . E . Gill Chaplain , W . P . Smith Organist , W . Nettie S . D ., F . B . Williams J . D ., Blarney D . C , J . de C . Treffry I . G ., Smith and A . S . Clunes Stewards , Real Tyler . The brethren afterwards
dined together , to the number of thirty , at the White Hart Hotel , where a splendid banquet was admirably served , and at a very reasonable cost , by Bro . Lukes , to which ample justice was done . The usual Masonic toasts followed , Bros . W . J . Hnghan and Emra Holmes responding to that of the Officers of the Grand Mark Lodge of England . Bro . Hughan , in the very interesting and telling speech
he made , showed by the list of names of eminent Masons in the Craft who hacl filled the office of Grand Master—which could only be held for three years in succession in this degree , and not practically ad vitam as in the Craft—that the Mark degree was held in high estimation by the rulers in Masonry . The present Grand Master was the Earl of Lathom , who was also Deputy Grand Master in the
Craft—a nobleman beloved by all who knew him . The Earl of Carnarvon , the Earl of Limerick , Lord Leigh—who were respectively Pro Grand Master , Provincial Grand Master of Bristol , and Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire in the Craft—and Earl Percy , were all Past Grand Mark Master Masons . The position of the Mark was exactly that of the other high degrees as regards the Craft . The
learned brother concluded a very able speech by showing what , •n his opinion , was the esoteric teaching of Mark Masonry . Bro . Emra Holmes , alluding to Bro . Hughan ' s statement of the position of Mark Masonry , as regards the Craft , said that by the articles of union between the two Grand Lodges in 1813 ifc was expressly stipulated in one of them that whilst ifc was ruled thafc ancient Masonry consisted of
three degrees , and no more , including the Royal Arch , " yet that this article did not intend but that the chivalric Orders should meet m our Chapters and Lodges as heretofore , " which was a distinct recognition of the high degrees of the Knights Templar and Roso t- 'foix , & c . He ( the speaker ) thought the Mark one of the mosfc interestmg degrees from an archajological point of view . The Mark ¦ W n ° -- —¦« « " "IVIIIAJUIU ^ IVWI f JUHM V \ SL » 10 "l JLUO . AJJ . " DELILAH " AT THE NATIONAL STANDARD THEATRE .
THE BROS . DOUGLASS , proprietors of this theatre , enjoy a high reputation for the liberal spirit in whioh they endeavour to meet tho taste of their patrons for a class of drama of a somewhat higher character than usually finds favour in the less aristocratic districts of London . Whenever a play of unusual merit has been produced at one of our West End theatres , ifc is a matter of course
thafc , sooner or later , the Brothers Douglass will arrange for its per . forraanco afc the Standard . Thus it was in the order of things that when Mr . Willing ' s drama , " Delilah , " proved so great a success , firstly afc the Park , where ifc was produced , and then afc the Olympic it shonld find ahearty welcome with the Douglasses and theirpatrons The former , however , have not contented themselves with a mere
representation of the play . They have secured the services of several well-known artists , with whose impersonations of character the audiences of tho Adelphi , Olympic , Old Drury , & c , are familiar . They havo provided new scenery and dresses , for the former of which Brother Richard Douglass deserves the warmest praise , while the latter can only be described by the word " magnificent . " The piece was played well and evenly throughout by tho whole company ;
but especial praise is clue to Miss Bella Pateman as Miss Trevelyan in the Prologue , and Delilah in the drama ; to Miss Fanny Addison as Lady Tempest , to Mr . J . C .
