what he protests it to be , the contents are such as inevitably lead a candid mind to admire the constant solicitude of the Holy See for the preservation of society from the pernicious errors of Masonry . The quotations , accredited by paginal reference in every case , show that nothing short of the ultimate destruction of throne and altar is the end and aim of the leaders of the Sect .
That all the members of the Sect know this is disproved by the book itself . But the inner circle , apparently , has its own ideas , and does not communicate them to ordinary members of the lower grades . The language in which the volume speaks of the Old Testament we forbear to quote here . The extracts may be read in Father Coppens ' s article . The Divinity of our Lord is
clearly denied , for on page 310 come these words : "This is the New Law , the ' Word , ' for which the world had waited and pined so long ; and every true Knight of the Eose will revere the memory of Him who taught it , and look indulgently on those who assign to Him a character far above His own conceptions or belief , even to the extent of deeming Him Divine . " And in the
extract from page 231 we have an evident indication that paganism , or as men would perfer to call it now-a-days , Naturalism , is the abyss in which Masonry proposes to cast the moral code of the human race . " The Mason . does not war with his own instincts , macerate the body into weakness and disorder , and disparage
what he sees to be beautiful , knows to be wonderful , and feels to be unspeakably dear and fascinating . He does not put aside the nature wnich God has given him , to struggle after another which He has not bestowed . " This , stripped of its poetical diction , is Animalism , and nothing else .
For the rest of the doctrines contained in Father Coppens ' s delineation of the Masonic principles the reader may consult the article . For ourselves , we can only say that they bear out the repeated condemnations by the Holy See , and fully justify its opposition to the Sect . But we cannot conceal from ourselves , nor would we hide from our readers , the deep conviction which presses
upon us that Father Coppens should have given some explanation of the long space of time during which he had possessed , and been silent on , his now published evidence of the detestable principles of the Masonic Lodges . We do not say he has not some just reason . But we should have preferred to learn the nature of it . Excellent men among us were led astray , only a few years ago ,
by what they considered the " a priori " authenticity of the documents concocted by the swindling and lying " fumiste , " Leo Taxil . It will do religion no good if men are misled a second time . And so we think it well to suspend judgment until more evidence of the book ' s authenticity is forthcoming . Meanwhile , safe in the guidance of the Holy Seo , we must all recognise the
danger of Masonry and its incompatibility with Catholic faith ; and as Father Coppens challenges denial of his statements , we shall await the entry of some protagonist of Masonry in the lists against him . Should none such come forth to do battle we shall have an additional proof of the wisdom of the Holy See in binding
together all Lodges of Masonry , wherever they be , in the same bands of condemnation and in the same strictures of its Apostolic judgment . This is proof enough for us . But more proof will be welcome , if on satisfactory evidence it is shown to rest . — " Catholic Times . "
